  • There is a Best of Luke Kelly album, on that he sing a lot of songs acapella - look forbest of luke kelly

  • that is a badass shit kelly is wearing

  • what the fuck is luke doin chattin on the phone, he'd want to pull himself aside and have a good long chat with himself

  • what the fuck is luke doin chattin on the phone, he'd want to pull himself aside and have a good long chat with himself

  • saw the Dubs many times in the late seventies/ early eighties and shared many beers with Luke during that time, little bit of trivia for fans, Lukes playing a borrowed banjo here, not his own trusty Merlin ! rumour has it that the Merlin which was a gift from Tommy Makem fell apart at a gig around this time .

  • Wonderful, wonderful, just wonderful. I was just thinking while listening to that performance that one of the special things that makes Luke's rendition so powerful and electrifying was his ability to get the (difficult combination of) words out in a way that is almost icy and clinical yet still retain the essence of the song. I'm glad to say that I did see him on stage, but of course, that is many years ago. He left us, with still so much to give. Where's his monument? Come on Dublin!

  • Luke Kelly, saw the fella in Liverpool - a truly great voice and a Dub to boot.

    Great city and great band.

  • corries r better at this.

  • no demo's tape's needed 4 real singers, paricularly irish folk singers and muscians.

  • tommy byrne and luke kelly are the greatests irish ballad singers ever

  • ach every time I see him I fall in love with him..!

  • I love the way Lukey points his finger to people I'm presuming he recognises halfway through! Also love the way he shakes his head and holds his ear, he's an all-time legend/genius/hero!

  • beat that you modern bunch of faurds

  • Boys from the black stuff. 80's classic.

  • @waaeaa Go on away, worry about Nama instead these are the real problems

  • @waaeaa so we are missing one more

  • would anyone happen to know.. or maybe work out the guitar chords for this...?

  • @Bradlock well mate dead simple.i think i play it on 2nd capo and start on em , simple progresion from there g d em d standard tuning .chorus goes to g em d and same few chords again.damien demsey video of same song shows him with guitar.

    great song

  • @thewalrus12,

yea funny for about 3 seconds until he got a Tipperary 'haymaker'

  • I recognise you as a traitor from the Tipperary ranks. WiN Lyrics right there!

  • No doubtm irish music is the best all over the world ! :) It is a frankly opinion from Hungary :)

  • De jò! You are right!

  • fucking brilliant

  • Hitting a copper from the shoulder - happy days

  • dnt agree thou they were "better" with luke i believe the dubliners nowadays still quiet entertaining of course not as the once were for they lost ronnie, ciaran and lukey so of course there going to have to drop a little but i still watch there stuff nowadays and of course stuff from the past

  • the man had some passion!

  • thank you very much!

  • @kellyoneill

    Hi mate!

    Luke Kelly is Really Awesome!

I was wondering, maybe Im wrong, but there isnt a song with the same tunes called Mick Mcguire??

If its true, do you know what song cames first???

    thanks!!!

  • @Kenshred also something that might be of interest. Most Irish travelled to England to work in jobs as described in this song. Check out this film which was very popular in Ireland during the 1980's. The Irish are not portrayed in any great light but the film is good anyway and the title track is another version of this song.

  • RIP Luke!!

  • God bless Luke, Ronnie and all the jolly lads here from America!

  • ive wandered up and down this world and never heard better than luke

  • true said my brother!

  • there is nothing better. If went on X factor now would be laughed off the stage people don't know good music now. They are only used to made bands, these lads started in pubs for crack and then end there. RIP.Ronnie.Luke.Ciaran.

  • ps my account age is out by 15 years ..my fault...anyway who cares...a great ol song..

  • me and the lads layed it in 1982 and 1983/84..it was a hard ol job but we did what we had to to do..." we layed it in the ditches....etc.." a true song...lloks like we are gonna have to do it again..lay the HOT ASPHALT... well our sons anyway..a great oul song...from the boys of swords..(well whats left of them) co dublin

  • if it wasnt for damien dempseys songs i wudnt know this.

  • both damo and luke do this song justice, i love both versions.

  • What a fuckin great song. Me and my friends back home used to love to have a few beers then just go to the park and sing Irish songs. Foggy Dew, Hot Asphalt, Gentleman Soldier, we didn't care who was listening or not. Sometimes we'd go on open mic night at the bar and sing too. I don't have the greatest voice but I love singin em.

  • Thanks Kelly me grand ma was an O'Neil.

  • No one is like Luke! Luke is one of the most amazing singers in the world!!!! R.I.P. Luke, Ronnie,Ciaran Ireland and the World will always miss you!

  • I'm finding all these wonderful Dubliner things all of a sudden!

I have known and loved this song for the longest time, but this is the best version I have ever heard!.

  • So much for "gingers have no souls"!!!

Luke Gerard Kelly - a ginger man who, although he didn't suffer fools gladly, had a heart as big as his voice, and in the words of his colleague Barney McKenna, "the soul of an angel".

Yes, I'm a fangirl. And I have yet to make that trip to Glasnevin...

  • love the guy. as a kid every time we went through north strand my da would tell me why the bridge was named afer him. then i went out with a girl who fancied him because he had a "certain nobility" about him. if he was still alive i'd vote for him as taoiseach!

  • Boy, a girl like that is a candidate for immediate marrige! Shows good taste!

  • We miss you Luke! RIP

  • Briljant performance, Nobody else than Luke can sing it like this. Thanks for posting.

  • Luke Kelly at his best.

What a performer. His pronunciation is and delivery is just incredible. There is no one like him.

  • the audience is sleeping?

    Great song, great "Dubs"!♥

  • mandri do u always talk out that fundamental orrifce u sit upon?

  • haha Prask, Ive never heard anyone put it quite in those words before :)

  • poetic! love it:)

  • *****

  • pure simple brilliance, bring back the sunday morning knock on the door session

  • RIP Ronnie... :(

  • R.I.P Luck and ronnie Dublin is a different place with out us here

  • All due respect to Dempsey, but I think you'll find even Damo himself wouldn't claim to be on a par with the legend that is Luke Kelly.

  • then go and watch dempsey ya muppet!!!

  • you are just one sad prick , trying to provoke , clocked your dribble on a few Dubs videos , get a life you stupid little boy

  • u are very sadly mistaken, and u would be hard pressed to find anyone who would make the same mistake. Luke cannot be bested.

  • @mcanner25

Dempsey was actually inspired by Luke. Buy Luke Kelly - The Performer and you will see.

PS: Actually Dempsey would piss on you, only he would rip your teeth out first.

  • actually Lukes epitaph would have been as he wanted it, he was a modest thoughful but deep man, and could put over sentiment without getting overly sentimental, GB Lukey

  • jasus lads thats proper ceoil if ive ever heard.

all were missing with this song is a blazin fire, good crowd and pints of guinness!

  • Went to Lukes grave there about a week ago, just a slab with his name and dubliner written on it. Maybe he wanted it that way, i'm not sure but i think he deserved better. not even a picture while dev has a massive monument standing above his, sad. R.I.P Luke

  • It looks like he's singing into a cellphone, it's quite funny.

When it comes to his singing, I can't ever praise it enough, so I won't even try.

  • What might seem to be funny tells a story.Luke didn't want to hear the echoes of his bandmates whilst singing group songs so he therefore covered his left ear!Now why did he just cover his left ear and not his right? This was because he was mostly deaf in his right ear so he wouldn't hear them anyway! That's why it looks like he's singing into a mobile!

  • Ah, that explains it. Thanks for the info

  • lol its just to make sure he is in tune, nothing more.

  • You're f*ckin right United Scotsman "just pure music, and theyr singin aboot tarring for fucks sake its mad" LOL That's class - that's appreciation there for yis lads!!!

  • Sing on Luke! Sing on!

and if the Angels and God say that you sing to much..

Then Knock Them In To The Hot Asphalt!

  • luke at his best

  • Happy St Patricks, peace n good luck to all GB the Dubs, hope Lukes singing today up there RIP

  • Luke your an A+++++ RIP

  • Amazingly great.Luke at his best. He seems real happy here. Great stuff

  • LUKEY aaaaaaa+++++

  • luke kelly the best singer in the would and a true irishman

  • GB Luke

  • My favorite version !

  • Absolutely Amazing, I can't get over this mans voice.

  • 2000th view for another great song from another great provider! Thanks Kelly!

  • Very best, I love this song.

  • do ya think they were all paid to sit so still? great song

  • The tune is the same one as the one used for "Mick McGuire" but the tune itself is called 'Bonaparte Crossing The Rhine.' The tune was on an LP of Micheal O'Suilleabhain that I had years ago. Great song.

  • This tune sounds very similar to one called "Mick McGuire".
