I remember back in 94 I was playing SS at the arcades and I had over 55 victories straight and some dude defeated me and everyone started applauding him for beating me. I never understood that. O_o BTW, SS is my favorite game eva!
As a fighting game fan, I've always wanted to try a Samurai Shodown game. It's one of the only fighting game franchises I have never tried and I need to try it sometime.
Hatori Honzo... there's another thing that name's known from, Kill Bill had a Hatori Honzo who crafted legendary swords. It's probably not historically accurate, but it's just another little tidbit of interesting info.
@thatrandombloak I don't mean you no offense but, it's HATORI HANZO.. and he was actually based on a real real warlord/lord. Not a blacksmith. There was a lot of speculations on whether he was a ninja... but we will never know. =)
Such a great review. Lots of good information in here that you would think is common knowledge, but has actually been lost over time. Pay attention, kids!
Wow...this was a really entertaining, informative, well put together review.
My copy of SNK Arcade Classics Vol. I arrived in the mail this morning...I'd already heard that S-Showdown had an impressive rep among old school beat 'em up fans, but after seeing this, I'm especially psyched to check it out!
Thank you, Swag...I'll be back to watch some more of your reviews :)
PS - An arcade machine in your garage? Dude, you rock!
Toys r us with out a doubt carried Neo Geo system, and games! I went to a toy r us in salinas ca, when i was a kid, maybe six or sevin times a year and I remember seeing those huge ass boxes and price tags...
Samurai Shodown is good, but the one people should really check out is part 2. SSII plays similarly to the first game but is better in every way, from the roster, to the sound and graphics and balance.
Interesting fact both Earthquake and Gladford are Spanish/Mexican citizens not US citizens because their bio state they were born in territories own by Spain before Mexico gain independence and the US took over the territories from Mexico. ALSO they were trained by Hanzo's Wife to become ninjas.
NOTE TO ALL SNK FANS IF YOU OWN A PSP SYSTEM YOU CAN BUY A SNK ANTHOLOGY GAME WHICH HAS GAMES LIKE METAL SLUG AND SAMURI SHOWDOWN FOR ONLY 10 DOLARS AT MOST STORES (you may have to special order)
@JackieFuckingChan Because unlike the men, whose primary purpose is to do things, female characters are required by law not to do things, but to look sexy while doing them. It sucks.
Get a neo geo cabinet and then put posters on it. Your friends at university will want to play and you can make TONS of money as well as have your own awesome cabinet!
awsome, I love it when there's to people in a review, sort of like siskel and ebert, it's a fair mix of peoples opinions, great job, you should do double reviews more often.
You two both have good speaking voices, but i noticed taht when you were describing the characters (Gen-non) that your voice seemed to trail off. LOL just watnted to give some constructive critisism, sorry, nothing really bad. Good review thou
Brutal diffulculty is right. That's why I hate games like this because if you have no siblings or friends, hard fighting games aren't fun, they're frustrating.
Wow SWAG, these co-op reviews do are great and a lot of fun. Brings fans of different reviewers closser to each other and help them experience other styles too, really great!
Loved this one, even though it's not my kind of game it was a great review! Hope to see more co-ops!
Not a bad review guys you cover most at what ss is.Some times i'll go back and play it for nostalgia sake, but i prefer ss2 more.Since i feel samurai shodown 2 is more of a refined fighter.
The real HVGN. Your CO friend failed to take the same abreviation. Anyway, that was a nice review. I played samurai showdown when i was 6 years old with my big brother.
A few errors/omissions: The Neo Geo home system and games were initially carried by at least one major retailer, Software Etc. It was odd to not even mention III, IV, V and V Special which were all also released on MVS and home cartridge systems (and are also compatible). The zoom function featured in here was first pioneered in Art of Fighting, though it was much jerkier and disorienting in its 1st use in that game. Overall its a good review, though --thanks for doing it!
The omissions were simply due to the time constraints. YouTube gives s maximum of 11 minutes for videos for non-partners (they turned me down twice), so I already had to cut stuff out for this review, including a bit I had about Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury. Also Software Etc. isn't a major retailer; Target, Wal-Mart, Circuit City and Toys R Us are major retailers. Software Etc., like EB games, is considered a specialty store.
Good to see recognition for the game EGM called the game of the year when it came out --I can't blame them, the first time I saw the opening in arcades that year I was shocked --mostly because I suddenly realized the Neo Geo I'd bought still had life in it.
the first time i ever find out abou SamuraiShowdown was in mame32 with SS4. dunno bout you but i liked it far more than any street fighter game(well, i never liked street fighter actualy)
Good lord, I had enough work to do that month without adding a sixth guest reviewer. Plus, I love Samurai Shodown a lot so I wanted to make absolutely certain that I would give the review more time to make sure I did it right.
I think you misunderstood me, at that point I hadn't even approached him about doing the review yet so it's not like I was, "saving it for later." I totally want to review Samurai Shodown II as well; maybe the fans would want to see another SWAG/Guru Larry review?
I know, I actually did buy some new equipment, I just need to get it set up. Hopefully I'll have my new voice-recording system all ready to go by my next review.
Hey Swag, did you record your theme song? If so, did you use a Shure SM57 or SM58 mic for guitars/vocals? I used to use those for recording speech occasionally, they sound great.
