I saw this line-up and Dennis for the first time live in 1996. My life was never the same after that. For a drummer to be unexpectedly exposed to this particular solo of Dennis (without knowing who Dennis was before) - it was like been struck by a bolt from the sky! When I watch this now I must admit I feel tears in my eyes. I am so grateful to have had the chance to witness a moment of genius.
its interesting how improvisational jazz musicians have to noodle a bit before they find the magick spot. Im sure this is why certain people hate jazz, because of the noodling, but when it hits it really hits and is pure magick. You cannot deny the noodling, jazz musicians noodle the shit out of their instruments, but it's like they have to. They are knocking at the door of the subconscious with the random hits and notes, conjuring as it were, and when that demon or whatever comes out.........
@pulsating123 Not sure if it's random. Some stuff may seem random but some of them are extremely advanced with their knowledge. At levels most people and usually some of the guys that play with them cannot fully understand. It's easy to call that noodling but analyse it and you'll find out it's not noodling at all… This doesn't mean that there aren't guys that really noodle though…
@santibanks the way I see it, if they sat and thought about the note they were going to play well in advance, then it would not be random, it would be creed or days of the new. No room for randomness or trust in ones gut with that music. If they play it completely in the moment, then it is random. The very words random and noodling themselves probably seem derogatory in some way I guess. There is basic structure to the song, but it is different every time. non-improvosors do not do that.
@santibanks I think bands that improvise noodle so much that they are practically swimming in oceans of spaghetti, but it tastes good and I love it.. it is real communication, not a dairy freeze copy of a copy of a copy, prepackaged thing
As we called it in the U.S. in early 1995..."The blow every one's s*** away tour"!! John is clearly pleased with what is going on during this #er.I was lucky enough to have a great seat in Minneapolis.Thank You John,Dennis, and Joey!!!!
second the wow on this. DC is hungry here, hear it all in hom from p-funk dyas to hos jazz and the joy, respect playing with John! They are having FUN! Off the chain amazing. This is the real-deal ( like i need to tell anyone that). what a trio! saw it many times. WOW.See John laughing himself silly, glowing? Not just an innovator, really a decent ethical man that shows his band, truly loves every second of it.what a band! fun too as it is serious.
Wow. I saw Dennis Chambers with the Steve Kimock Band a few years back, and I thought Steve let Dennis steal the show. Now I see why. He just rocked my shit. It's almost too much. I don't even think he broke a sweat, and that was part 2 of a 20 min. tune. Holy shit. Wow.
