You don't need to insert a USB Flash Drive into the cartridge area...on the right side of the unit is a specific location for the insertion of a flash drive...it's next to the green headhpone jack. One may copy .mp3 or .mp4 files to a flash drive and insert into the flash drive slot and they will play. I have tested this myself. Good luck.
I just got mine today. I also found out that you don't have to have a specially named folder for MP3 playback. I do recommend you divide special groups of MP3's into sperate folders, but the player seems to check the flash drive for MP3's and play them. It's pretty basic but it works and the sound quality is surprisingly good.
Ah the old C-1. I won't complain about that because without it, we would not have had mnearly as many choices for reading material. Looks to me like the state budgets prioritize handicapped services very very low, because in my state our library serviceis understaffed and has a huge owrkload. @jls1114 The advanced players are distributed on a ratio of 1 to 10 (at least around here) - 1 advanced for every 10 basic, the odds of getting the basic player are uch better.
I just ordered a blank cartridge for mine, should be here hopefully in a week or two, I hope. LOL It's coming in from Perkins. $17.00 for 2 GB + a USB cable.
@wheelieblind If you Google something like "blank NLS Cartridge" or similar, odds are it'll point you right to the page either at Perkins or APH. I've got 7 books on my cartridge, so that should answer your one book per cartridge question.

How do you switch between multiple books in a cartirdge? I can't figure out how to do that. I have the model DA1 with the previous and next buttons.
