This song should have been the theme song to the show "Damages," staring Ted Danson and Glen Close (well technically ted danson only in season 1). It really should have. It totally makes sense. It's not too late. Thumbs up if you aggree and you want this to be in the next season and ted danson to also be in the next season as a star.
His outside music included so many songs that were extremely vivid. You hear all these metal bands and whie they seriously talk about murder and whatnot and all you can think of are moshpits. You listen to this, and what you got is insanity; vivid murder cases undetectable unless you live it, or in other words, listen to the outside album and damn, the murder cases become so vivid, you'll scare yourself shitless. That's why I love the album since it's so horroric and very vivid.
Outside is one of the best albums I ever bought! If I had met David Bowie personally, I'd will shake hands with him and thank him for how much he means to me and several million other people, including his influence on other musicians! And have a coffee together and talk about music and what records he's most proud of! This legendary Englishman is incredible! // Christoffer. :-) P.S. My girlfriend loves him too! D.S.
I have read countless reviews of all Bowie albums from professional critics. After Scary Monsters, it's really hard to find a favourable opinion. I agree that the 80's weren't his best years by any means, I might like the catchy pop tunes but they weren't quite good actually. Yet, in the 90's he wanted to innovate himself again and Outside and Earthling are, in my opinion, amazingly good albums. I think the critics are too hard on him.
I was a little bit afraid of this album first and only bought it in a package with another CD as a special offer. Now after listening to it 5 or 6 times I am really fascinated and cannot get enough of it...
Oh my word I adore this album, David reall explored a strange area with it, and he did it like a natural. I so wish he'd continue his work with this concept.
My dearest Klaavir ( unusual subriquet ) thank you. I said 70's peers - Rocket Man, Starman etc. Sacrifice - modern love. They know who they are. The Furs sounded like this particular recording and Bowie liked them. How do you set up an album which has a theme about a murder, a really varied ensemble ( minimalist, jazz, dance ) soundtrack ( which BBC segmented ), with some bewlay bro's voices and signature references, at that time of life. See some of my other reviews ( so shamelessly bowie ).
Bowie with Eno again ( for the album). Could the artists who were contemporaries with him in the seventies and looking over their shoulder at him then, have pulled this off aged 48 years??? This is a great title album track and I see in record shops at the cheaper spectrum of DB CD's, why? On a list of Bowie title tracks top ten - this has to be near the top end. One of his best works even if you don't get the segway voices on the album. My only citicism - Psychodelic furs once touted by him ?
@Davmicon to answer your question-HELL NO!!truth be told they couldn't have done an album this good at 28 much less at 48!!!and at this point does bowie really have any contemporaries?and if so who?and as for outside being in the cheaper end of his cd's that has always been the case with him.he's soooooo far ahead it takes people years to catch up-LITERALLY.i've got friends who are just realizing how good ashes to ashes was and you know when that came out!!!!
Bowie was always vast years ahead of his time ... still the case now years after this release and as evidenced by the many very young people now becoming familiar with and appreciative of his music.
The one artist who still never ceases to amaze me after over 36 years of listening.
@JJackAL52 David Bowie is not ahead of his time. Time will never catch up and we will never catch up with David Bowie,. His talent is not predicated on the passing of time. Have we caught up with what he did in the 70's? He is outside Time, which is waiting in the wings and speaks of senseless things.
@dejahthoris .... Very well said ... I absolutely agree with you ... there is no 'catching up' with Bowie and his music. He, his music, talent and influence don't just stand the test of time or remain ahead of it. They are 'Outside' it, so there is no 'catching up'.
@panthervoodoo ... Very true friend .. He easily could have remained with any of the successful sounds he created along the way, yet the man consistently broke new ground risking alienation from fans old and new alike as he explored new sounds. He carved a totally unique path. That's the genius of the man's music and the reason it's continually rediscovered and newly appreciated through the years.
I, like Bowie, am in the future today!!! I can so relate!!! A bit boastful of myself to compare myself with him, but I do get it, just as I'm quite convinced most of you do also!!! Not even a stretch imaginatively considering how he/we all LOVED ZIGGY!!!
It's only half past eleven, I'm not drunk, and I feel my musical horizon has just been broadened so far, I won't be able to see the sun rise tomorrow morning.
I agree with that, Bowie was pushing the boundaries with this album and it was a bit too high concept for the mainstream but it really is a great work.
well. we are waiting for this appreciation for years now and unfortunately it's not arriving. After a commercial flop of 1.Outside even Bowie himself gave up continuing the cycle of diaries of Nathan Adler, which probably was the biggest mistake in his whole career.
haunting and rich, this song infects my brain and won't leave, I love it. BOWIE!

Great song. The outside album turned me on to Bowie, wasn't really a fan of him before, but the tour to this album was fantastic, check out
the Lorely version of this song. I'd say even better than the studio version

Check out the Tin Machine version of this song, entitled "Now". Bowie mentions at the end of the song that it's for a future album.
