People have to stop saying that "It is normal that her voice changed", her voice suddenly changed after her Daydream Tour, she lost a lot of her chest range and power, there is NOTHING normal about that and it has nothing to do with age, she was 27 at that time.
@theoneandonly2503 mariah has vocal nodules and has had them sense she first started singing. when mariah does not rest the nodules get rougher and probably have grown bigger. back then she rested more than she does now and she probably warmed up before she performed. she still has a 5 octave range and can hit every note that she did back then..its her clarity and power that changed. the range STAYED. her recent christmas album proves that. when mariah rests (for months), she sounds great.
@jaypaidincash No, something happen to her voice in 1997, nodules can help, but that's not the only reason, her voice had some good and bad moments between 90 and 96 but 97 is truly something, her voice changed so much and she never recover fully since then. I don't trust her Christmas album, her belts are probably computarized, all I trust are her real LIVe performances (like she did during her angel advocate tour, and not all her performances were 100% live).

Also, to be honest I think mariah stopped worrying about being close to perfect on live performances..even tho she still gets stage fright sometimes. @jaypaidincash Her belts on CD are always perfect and sounds like it used to sound during her prime, but in live, her highest belts are always lipsync from the CD...I don't believe any of her F5 or G5 or G#5 since Glitter are real, she probably sang them lower and then the engineers lift up the key...That's my opinion. But I agree with you that her voice in her 2010 tour is better than her 97 voice, clearer and more powerful, her voice really improved in 2010, her voice was not all scratchy :)
@theoneandonly2503 check out the undubbed video of 2010 Holy night, her voice breaks in the official live video that part is dubbed so you can´t really realize it, but when you´ve watched the vid you´ll see she can still hit and sing those high notes, her voice breaks when she is passing from mix voice to chest but then she goes and hits those high notes again. She can sing it perfectly despite that "break"
@pedy19 yeah. that's because it's partly lipped hun! when her voice broke in this holy night performance, it's when she sings live. the rest is perfect cause it's LIPPED (over a mix between her 2001 version and new vocals she recorded nowadays to make it sound like it's actually live)

I would go as far to say she doesn't like hitting that note because it isn't her comfort zone. She has hit plenty of F5 and F#5s. The upper belting isn't the problem, it's the medium that has thinned out.

Auto-tune is for pitch correction, one thing she has never had a problem with. You can not harmonize those upper belts.

I'm not denying her voice has gained clarity in 2010, that was really awesome, some videos on Youtube show that very well, but still she lipsync a lot her highest belt (not to say always) and her technique is wrong, she strains her vocals as soon as she try to belt too high (when she attempt to belt live). But she still has good pipes, great medium and lows and that unique tone. Let's agree to disagree.

She has said that she's had nodules since childhood, and she has never gotten rid of them. Obviously, singing through them worked great for the first six years of her career, but that didn't last for long. That's probably the reason why her tone has been changing a little bit every two years.
@theoneandonly2503 She has hit G#5 at the Grammys in 2006. She has hit G#5 in My Saving Grace & Through The Rain multiple times. She has hit G#5 PLENTY OF TIMES. She even hit an A5 live during CB era. That was not lip-synched. The mixed belts are not difficult!!! She can hit those when she has vocal rest. It is the MEDIUM that has thinned out. The huskiness is due to the nodules. All her dubbed over concerts are dubbed over for DVD release. Anything else is due to her vocal unrest.
@theoneandonly2503 Furthermore (sorry if I am replying a lot), her voice thinned out because of the massive amounts of touring she did on top of that, she didn't take care of her voice. She hit the top notes EVERY night of her tour. It was not intelligent. If she didn't do the Daydream tour her voice wouldn't be where it is today. Naturally, women's voices lower as they grow older, but her voice gained the huskiness because it thinned out.
I sort of agree that something we don't know happened after the DD tour. She was belting out these huge notes and then suddenly she was struggling. Maybe she did have some sort of procedure done to remove the nodules and it didn't work? Maybe the stress from the divorce led her to do some other things that weren't good for her voice? No one knows for sure, but she had great technique that showed in her prime. If she didn't, her voice would've gotten worse much sooner.
What makes this song work so well, is the total energy and passion she puts into it. The old "heart and soul" of singers like Bessie Smith or Billie Holliday, Aretha Franklin. Mariah just has certain songs that seem to trigger these incredible performances and sweep th audience along, all gathered up for the journey and I love her for it.

I remember what one commenter once said. He said that Mariah's voice during this time was like crystal. Yes, it is indeed crystalline in this performance. However, that crystal would break a year after - sadly enough.
@selujlyrad04 - This crystal isn't broken, Trust me, just saw her in the Angels Advocate Concert and these youtube videos don't come close to how great her voice sounds in person.
I typically dont like when artists turn the climax of their ballads into dance mixes, but this was cool...and Mariah's voice was so beautiful! She didnt over do it with the whistle singing, she just did her....so sweet and simple...

Of course I have. Honestly it's Mariah at her worst. E=MC2 is by far the shittiest product to have stemmed out of her whole collection. Production wise - I can't even listen to it. Vocally - her vocals are souless. She tries to still belt those high notes that she is no longer capable of hitting, and it sounds superficial and strained. You are really daft if you believe that her older stuff lacked soul :| This song for one is oozing with soul. Mariah these days are tits and dollar signs.

I LOVE this performance. I have been a Mariah fan since day 1, and I will say that her voice and style have changed. The Mariah in this performance was all about real singing, and she threw down! Still love her, but it's just not the same. A lot of true Mariah fans can relate.

I really really love this performance. It's much better that the one on NBC live in 1993. It is quite sad and disspointed that sony didn't release the Daydream: From New York To Tokyo VHS as when it was schedule to be release, Tommy Mottola decided not to release it for good as Mariah broke his heart and walk away from him. I absolutely agree. People may love her how she is now but it cant be denied that she is totally different. It's hard to believe it's the same woman, honestly.
She had changed the way she dress and her music style, but she never changed her personality. Mariah is stil the same person, she was back then. Still the truly kind hearted, very caring and funny Mariah.

I'm not hating, I used to be a fan and still is a fan of what she did by the past, but truly she has problems on medium belts cause at least it is her real voice, but her upper belting register is definitivly dead LOL

@theoneandonly2503 There is nothing wrong with her technique. Yes, she lips during times of vocal unrest. But lets see you get no rest, and try to sing at 8am in the morning? The vocal folds are muscles, they tend to vocal fry in the morning. Matter of fact, if her technique is diminished, how do you say she can still sing songs like WBT? That song requires perfect breath control!

@rekupp Well, she shows some breathing issues in that song when she sing it live. I'm not denying her voice has gained clarity in 2010, that was really awesome, some videos on Youtube show that very well, but still she lipsync a lot her highest belt (not to say always) and her technique is wrong, she strains her vocals as soon as she try to belt too high (when she attempt to belt live). But she still has good pipes, great medium and lows and that unique tone. Let's agree to disagree.

If her technique was so great, her voice wouldn't be so scratchy and it is funny that you are speaking about her breathing technique cause it became the thing she sucks at. I can show you hundred and hundred of live that show her bad technique (well in fact maybe it is her voice that is bad but not her technique, but if her technique was that great, her voice wouldn't be that bad, you know what I mean)

She has said that she's had nodules since childhood, and she has never gotten rid of them. Obviously, singing through them worked great for the first six years of her career, but that didn't last for long. That's probably the reason why her tone has been changing a little bit every two years.

@theoneandonly2503 She has hit G#5 at the Grammys in 2006. She has hit G#5 in My Saving Grace & Through The Rain multiple times. She has hit G#5 PLENTY OF TIMES. She even hit an A5 live during CB era. That was not lip-synched. The mixed belts are not difficult!!! She can hit those when she has vocal rest. It is the MEDIUM that has thinned out. The huskiness is due to the nodules. All her dubbed over concerts are dubbed over for DVD release. Anything else is due to her vocal unrest.

@theoneandonly2503 Furthermore (sorry if I am replying a lot), her voice thinned out because of the massive amounts of touring she did on top of that, she didn't take care of her voice. She hit the top notes EVERY night of her tour. It was not intelligent. If she didn't do the Daydream tour her voice wouldn't be where it is today. Naturally, women's voices lower as they grow older, but her voice gained the huskiness because it thinned out.

I sort of agree that something we don't know happened after the DD tour. She was belting out these huge notes and then suddenly she was struggling. Maybe she did have some sort of procedure done to remove the nodules and it didn't work? Maybe the stress from the divorce led her to do some other things that weren't good for her voice? No one knows for sure, but she had great technique that showed in her prime. If she didn't, her voice would've gotten worse much sooner.

What makes this song work so well, is the total energy and passion she puts into it. The old "heart and soul" of singers like Bessie Smith or Billie Holliday, Aretha Franklin. Mariah just has certain songs that seem to trigger these incredible performances and sweep th audience along, all gathered up for the journey and I love her for it.

Just DIVINE !!! Her voice back then was like a force of nature!!! Unique, ingenious and gorgeous!!! I soooo wanna hear this live voice again NOW!! And what's that bullshit about 'she's older now, its normal, that her voice is different' ???... Don't be stupid, please!!! A human's voice can be almost constantly strong and sound almost the same till the person's 50 or 60 years old or maybe older!!! I remember what one commenter once said. He said that Mariah's voice during this time was like crystal. Yes, it is indeed crystalline in this performance. However, that crystal would break a year after - sadly enough.

omg...you didnt know?? its all over the mariah fan sites! mariah even over twitter just this last week told us the name of the album "memiors of an imperfect angel" the chief of her label even played a sample of one of the new song "hate u" for the album at some record label event... and just this whole last month she has been interviewed and multiple times she mentioned that she was finishing her album. sat. over twitter she said she was listening to a potential sequence for the album!!

AND its a ballad...it kinda sounds like a cross between "bleeding love" and "we belong together".... i think....the vocals sound great too! and they JUST today and yesterday learned about two more song titles... "candy bling" and "the impossible"....the impossible sounds like its gunna be a big ballad... i hope it is...she needs another hit like hero or we belong together... either way the album is gunna be AAAAMMMAAAZZING!!

Of course I have. Honestly it's Mariah at her worst. E=MC2 is by far the shittiest product to have stemmed out of her whole collection. Production wise - I can't even listen to it. Vocally - her vocals are souless. She tries to still belt those high notes that she is no longer capable of hitting, and it sounds superficial and strained. You are really daft if you believe that her older stuff lacked soul :| This song for one is oozing with soul. Mariah these days are tits and dollar signs.

I'm a big fan since the first day and there's no doubt that E=MC² is an amazing album. She became more mature, more confident in her music and you can hear it. I was amazed when I first heard "Cruise Control" and "Migrate". Those two songs are incredible she still has it !! . So the haters, shut the fuck up and if you don't appreciate her, you don't have to listen to her

I LOVE this performance. I have been a Mariah fan since day 1, and I will say that her voice and style have changed. The Mariah in this performance was all about real singing, and she threw down! Still love her, but it's just not the same. A lot of true Mariah fans can relate.

I really really love this performance. It's much better that the one on NBC live in 1993. It is quite sad and disspointed that sony didn't release the Daydream: From New York To Tokyo VHS as when it was schedule to be release, Tommy Mottola decided not to release it for good as Mariah broke his heart and walk away from him. That is so so stupid.

i know even as you watch all her LIVE songs in this concert (tokyo dome 1996) there was never any sign of struggle or loss of quality she was truly one of a kind and just isn't the same anymore it is truly saddening. has anyone watched tokyo dome conference? she comments that singing all her songs back to back here is very straining on her voice and she was right look what happened? we love you forever mariah x
