  • herbie talks about the origin of this song on "Spectacle" Elvis Costello"s show. check it out

  • Una de las mejores versiones de esta canción (aunque no estoy seguro si es la primera) es la que hizo Mongo Santamaría con La Lupe.

  • Because this is a mix of cuban music and r&b, This song made the boogaloo rhythm to gain popularity in US. Is a sound developed in NY with the influences of black and latino music during the 60s. If you like this you may like "el watusi" that was with watermelon man the first songs to become very popular.

  • @Brancaleone31 at least speak fucking english

  • to be an educated, or well rounded human being, you must, at least, learn, two more languages,,,,i.e.Spanish, and english, and perhaps German....... to be qualified to express yourself, in a better profound method, as you have already expressed... try to be more deeper, than your cells have provided yopu with your rant...

  • @Brancaleone31

Non c'est bien Watermelon man! Cantaloupe Island, c'est un autre morceau de Herbie.

  • Круто

  • this is the best version of this tune.

  • el hombre patilla :)

  • Watar melloan mayn!

  • watermelon!!!!! in zurich?? culmannstrasse!!!anybody remembers!!!!

  • i have to play this at my middle school band and its a bit faster than this...i play trombone good but this song is pretty hard since im still in middle school

  • Pancho Sanchez

  • Great song, strange video, the perfect combo.

  • playin this in jazz class

  • Love how they sing "wajermello men"

  • Luv this song I play it on my bass guitar class :)

  • surprised you didn't make the guy in this video black.

  • Original is by Mongo Santamaria

  • It's originally Herbie's tune. Herbie wrote it and released it on his debut album in 1962. Mongo covered it the following year and had a hit. There may be confusion because Herbie himself did a remake on the hugely successful Headhunters LP in 1973.

It could definitely be argued that this is the best or CLASSIC version of the song. But it is Herbie's.

  • @rosewind52 Original by Herbie Hancock!

  • This Jam Will Always Be Too COOL...

  • This Jam Will Always Be Too COOL...

  • Kudos to the production team.

    What a great video, LMAO

  • lol good one any iz lovez thiz zong

  • Watermelon Man or What a Mellow Man ?? Hahaha LOL

  • how classic.

  • Why does the woman knee him in the balls and throw him down on the ground?

  • because its herbie hancock.... lol

  • Because watermelon man tried to grab her watermelons. Watch how he tries to approach her.

  • If I didn't know the song title, I'd think the lyrics where What a mellow man.

  • The vocalists are actually saying "what a mellow man", i think.

  • Amazing video for an amazing track. Well done!

  • maximo temaaa!!

  • Nice beat!!!

  • best arrangement imo

  • Herbie Hancock... what a mellow man...

  • sooooo awsemmmm!!!!!!! im gonna play it on my fluteXD

anyways, lovin the tune, we're playing this at school. :D

  • @tombokickass heh... same ftw :D

  • This is very cool

  • My jazz band played this last year. Now one of our songs is Chameleon, which is also by Herbie Hancock

  • I was thinking a lot and suddenly I hear this song and made me feel very relaxed lol its awesome

  • wata melo man. lolllololllolololol

  • thats cool,

  • the orignal has such a different feel of the music.. to me the original is feeling relaxing or just strollin and mindin your own business this one makes me think of partying and like central america for some reason

i like both versions very much though

  • me too, but a different version

  • Wow! I finally realised there are two (very) different versions of this tunes called Watermelon Man.

I've heard the one from Herbie Hancock's "Head Hunters" many times, but I first heard this version done like reggae by a 60's group, "Jazz Jamaica." I almost like the reggae cover better, but this original is awesome!

  • Watemeyo!

  • OUCH! 3:07 the chicks cold

  • i played a different version of this in a jazz band i was in 2 years ago. if you listen to the original by Herbie Hancock it sounds nothing like this :P

  • wut school did u go to? im in Jazz band now(im in waccamaw)

  • right now i go to waukesha north but i used to go to horning middle school when i played it, im from south eastern wisconsin

  • I like the idea of the dude walking in the video. It's really the kind of picture I get in my mind when I hear this version of Watermelon Man.

  • haha douche... 3:09

  • Wow! What style of music is this? I have to know.

  • Comment removed

  • with a little dash of funk

  • its jazz with a little bit of latin in it...you can hear the guiro, cowbell and timbales so its latin percussion.

  • @Ingason8

dont forget to mention the congas

  • @Ingason8

Think it might need a little more cowbell?

  • @ChopstickBrando I see what you did there.

  • @Ingason8 ya but it was composed in cuba i have the c.d. for it...hmm strange

  • @spoofooz Yes, Cuba is near latin America

  • It's this hip new thing called Jazz.

  • Its like a funk samba. You could just say its latin funk/samba. done :D

  • @Aztec1011 I think it's a cha-cha. Usually with a cha-cha a percussionist's hitting something three times in the background every 2 beats. I think those might be egg shakers? You are right though it's pretty funky
