  • Yea, Jeffkim, please, tell me what chord do u use in chorus when u play it for the second time. first line is F-G-Am, and i just cant figure it out whats next. G/F#???Btw Paulipaz, i play this song on uke 2:)

  • can you tutorial the intro before you play the song

  • Hey Jeffkim. Could you list out the chords? I can't hear everything you say (even at the highest volume) and see i'm trying to transpose this to ukulele. I appreciate you posting this. I love it when people do these kind of videos. :) kudos

  • auchhhhh!

  • i really want to learn going nowhere from elliott smith...can you make a tutorial?

  • so I picked up my guitar to try and learn along with this tutorial. and then you said "I'm just gonna play a quick intro to highlight some of the chords" .........and then I just put my guitar back down.

    way over my head

  • thanks a lot! the tabs on the net are all oversimplified and he uses all these unusual and interesting chords, which is part of why i wanted to learn his songs, and the live stuff of him always focuses on something other than his fret hand during the difficult ones. good ear! (voice and everything else too...) are you seriously using a camera mic??

one criticism: would've been better if you'd tuned up before hand. i'm in tune with the song but i'm out of tune with you even with capo...

  • I really found this very helpful! but it looks hard I'm kinda discouraged to play it now

  • i cant handle how soothing and amazing this is. its weird but i hit the replay button more on this than the actual song!

  • No. Dude.

  • does anyone else get an Adrian Brody vibe from this guy?

  • @legomaniac1346 thats crazy because that was my first thought when i saw him too!!!

  • Love your little intro mate, sounded beautiful.

    Good work

    :)

  • God damn bro you have spider fingers. Props!!

  • i wish when you were my teacher back in the day (ok, like 18 years ago....) when i took guitar! It's much easier to learn from you than from Ray Romano! (yes, that was my guitar teacher's name, funnily enough). and you sure beat guitar spiellen or whatever it's called now - harmony central - printouts. oh and they're right, you have a great voice, very soothing. Makes me wanna snuggle w ya whi le you sing and maybe if your nice I'll sing ya some mary lou lord back:)

  • @215juliusgirl thats my guitar teacers name!

  • thankyou you and your lesson were amazing. :)

  • You are adorable! And Between the Bars is my favorite Elliott Smith song.

  • tuned down a half step

  • Very nice, Man! Sing, though and you' re the man!!!

  • dont be afraid to sing out man u could be great

  • marry me.

  • This video tutorial idea is really amazing. I can't imagine how many people you are helping. I'm a little rusty, but I'm just about the right skill level at the guitar for this to be attainable for me with a lot of practice. I have a baby almost due and I'm so excited to be able to play this song for her. Thanks so much!

  • you need to sing louder haha but great cover.

    dont be shy haha.

  • Its a guitar tutorial, so I think hes doing that on purpose. Haha

  • FUCKING AWESOME

  • Your singing voice is sooo soothing.... I makes me want to fall asleep, that's a good thing

  • what are the chords in order again? Am, G augmented, Cmajor ..... ?

  • tune all the strings a whole step down, that's what Elliott does for this song.. pretty sure at least

  • Your intro was great. Hopefully when I get the hang of playing this tutorial will be of more use :P

  • that was amazing.. :) i wish i could play the way you play... but my technique is confused.

  • your speaking voice is an exact match to Adrien Brody

  • Elliott doesnt play it in standard, he tunes a whole step down. This is still perfect chord sequence though, so people shouldn't down rate just for that. ;)

  • Check out sweet adeline tab , version 4, of this song. It is very accurate.

    BTW - Jeff rocks!

  • thanks man\

    your tutorials are awesome

  • my fav indie bands

    1.elliott smith

    2.bright eyes

    3.the shins

    5.rilo kiley

  • 5 stars nicely done. Took me a while but its all good thank you.

  • I love how the vox are lower sitting behind the guitar it sounded trippy at first but yeah line in is the way 2 go,, I respect my neib's whenever

    possible

great song,, u did a good job!

  • Nicely played and explained :) Great stuff.

  • I know its probably a lot of work - but why dont you write the main chords on the side. It would be a lot easier for a lot of people to keep up.

Just an advice - but anyway

thanks for putting this up man!!! Great stuff !!

  • Great job

  • whats the chord at 3:23

    "2nd fret. 0023"? i don't understand please help.

    thk you

  • standard tuning.. Gm, Db, Bb, F....

  • i love the intro :)

  • I like it too! Not sure why you're getting thumbs down :(

I gave you thumbs up :)

  • NOOOOOO~~~ I CAN'T KEEP UP D: lol but cheers mate for the tutorial

  • Maybe he can't sing that high. Did it ever occur to you?

  • yea i agree with zombie. who cares if you have to play it an octave lower or higher to better suit your singing range? it doesnt really matter, whatever suits you best.

  • dude ur so fuckin dumb. this is a turorial on the guitar aspect of the song, not the singing. it isnt supposed to be a cover.

  • Comment removed

  • haha ok buddy. you want to have a real argument and yet you call me a loser bitch and tell me to go fuck myself? the reason why ur irrelevant, and yes, dumb, is because ur criticizing his singing in a GUITAR TUTORIAL. he may be singing low because he wants us to be able to hear the guitar chords he's playing, which is the whole fucking point of this.. geez.

  • Jesus, take it easy

.What the hell, everyone here would dissagree with you in stead of Gammarklar. I mean, im no Genious but i know who is being rediculous and who isn't

  • There's no way i can sing in the same register without turning this into a screeching comedy instead of a tutorial. :) This isn't a voice lesson, just guitar. most of these are recorded line-in at hours where my neighbors would kill me for mic-ing and singing properly. anyway, thanks for checking it out. you guys should try and help each other instead of fighting because times are rough for everyone. Gotta help those around you, not take them down. cheers.

  • Fair enough.

  • @jeffhkim2501 your voice sounds great in the lower registers, dont listen to that butthole.

  • @codemonkeybrains

What a pathetic comment. The guy is just helping others and circulating the music of a great artist. What is quite sad is that your musical ignorance is displayed in your reference to john lennon. Well done on branching out there; not to criticise him at all, just you. The fact that he has posted the video shows that he sees there is 'nothing wrong' as you so eloquently put in doing a rendition of smith's work.

  • This is good, thanks. The right hand part is somewhat useless though - the sound and video don't match up and it's somewhat disorienting.

  • You sound great, and I find this very helpful. Thanks!

  • can someone write the chords out for me? sorry my comp has no audio right now, and its really hard to try and make out all the chords without audio. any help appreciated, thanks!

  • the 4th chord is wrong

  • i have a dumb question. Is the guitar tuned half step down?

  • I believe this song is a whole step down.

  • no, a whole step down

  • you play so good and this is very helpful, but man it's hard to stay awake watching your videos, you need some energy dude.

  • this song is accually not in standard tuning. it is tuned down a whole stepp on each string from standar so it would be DGCFAD thats how a lot of elliots stuff is.

    -peace

  • helpful!thx so much

  • You have an extremely low voice. You should try singing up an octave.

  • Your singing voice is dreamy.

And this video is very helpful :)

    Thank you

  • beautiful hands, and voice

  • omg your so dam good at playing guitar.

    lucky.

    damit.

  • lol.. "damit"

    that was cute hahahah

  • that 4th chord is supposed to be an E??? Check out the original elliot smith one. Also he tunes the guitar down to D in that clip (hes wearing a yellowish shirt-yellowish background)

    cheers

  • You are an amazing guitarist.

  • Hey, really appreciate what you're doing. It's a big help to beginner guitarists like me. : )

  • You are so beautiful.

  • i like it because you whisper

  • hello my friend .You re an amazing elliot smith guitar teacher.I ve learned all the songs with your tutorial... i appreciate thanx

  • Something about you is very genuine. You're singing on out of your range though.

  • unless your chaning the relationship of the notes on each strings, tuning in standard, half step down, or whole step down doesn't really matter... so stop arguing about it... its just a preference thing... and is often based on singing voice...

when someone is tuning to a completely different relatonship, like drop D, or tuning to G or D, as is typical with slide guitar, then tuning becomes important to be able to make the right shapes, with proper slides and hammers, etc...

  • nicely done, although some tab in the more info section would be a godsend!

  • you are very talented

  • I really appreciate you taking the time to put this up; I've pretty much got it...Can you just give me the chords in order; verse/chorus/bridge cheers.

  • Congratulation !

  • excellent stuff, really helped, couldn't crack the right hand until now

  • TUNE YOUR GUITAR!

  • QFT

  • what does qft mean

  • quoted for truth

  • helped alot, thanks

  • I thought so too. you just got to get about 2 and a half minutes in for the breakdown.

  • you are amazing.

  • f8**8*ken good

  • How long have you been playing for? I want to get good enough to play like that. I mean, I can play music that is complex, but it's my own so it isn't really like learning because it just kind of flows, but learning to play someone else's music just seems more difficult for me. I think that if I could simply focus long enough to teach myself to read music, I might have an easier time at it.

    Nice video.

  • The intro is so beautiful - it's awesome! You have a charming voice, but you need to sing with more projection (but that could be because of the video, too)

  • Nicely done. I love the intro, but I don't think I will play (because I can't :P).

  • That intro is sick; especially when you slide your finger for that soul note.

  • that intro sounds great! i love that little slide you put in, i dont know why it just adds a lot of flavor. You're the man, sounds amazing.

is that really standard tuning? i have to tune a step down to match yours but im not even sure of that. maybe my guitar sucks though. i really want to learn how to play the song

  • thanks a lot! you're fantastic:)

  • you have awesome tutorials. however i think you play too fast. try to pause your fingers a couple of seconds on the cords, i'm always pausing the video, but i can't see some parts. Angeles and this one :)

Congratulations dude. I would do anything to be on your shoes, i wish i could play as good as you

  • is this standard tuning?

  • he's down a half step--Eb.. otherwise traditional tuning

  • no it's not.. i was wondering myself aswell..

  • You did a really good job. Your guitar sounds really great. Keep up the good work.

  • Vraiment beau

    J'aime beaucoup ta voix grave

Encore plus grave que celle d'Elliott je crois ?

    Mais vraiment,

    good job, it's beautiful.

  • man your voice is way to deep! charming.. also good tutorial as always.. the intro is wonderful..

  • if you ask me, the easiest elliot smith song to learn is 2:45 am. it's a great song too. nice job, bud.

  • Damn, you´re good..! Thanks for a great tutorial..

  • wish ihad some natural talent..what is the eaisest elliott song to learn?

  • thanks you for all your tutorials!

  • could go a bit slower !!

  • Great post

  • hey mate i love the intro do you think you could tab it? its real real good. you also have a good voice.

    cheers

    ell

  • itll take a while but im gonna get this one down

  • keep cranking em out dude!

  • great :D , but the tunning is D G C F A D

  • All string are tuned down a whole step, not half step. Half would be, E to D# ... B to A# and so on.

  • very nice lesson man

  • awesome thanks.....this clears up the problem i was having.....its tuned a full step down like a lot of his songs. D G C F A D

  • great tutorials, i do wish you would shine some light on the fretboard while you do these though.

  • i'm impressed, dude.. great tutorial.

  • The tuning is not drop D Its all tuned down a half step, tuning the E down to D would just fuck up how every chord that includes that string sounds. Also in the verse in the first run throught it goes C C/B

  • the tuning is drop D

  • Thanks for this...I just wish it was brighter..My monitor is slightly broken, So my gamma settings are too dark..*kicks monitor*

  • hey good work dude, I watched a video of elliott doing it first, then watched this. I missed alot of the subtlties, i still cant get the f to sound right, i feel like an f major might work better

  • good stuff, im gonna start playing guitar again soon!

    Long Live Elliott

  • you=my hero!

    thanks!!!

  • at 3:13 your fingers look like the face suckers from aliens ^_^ looks like it hurts!

  • love your tutorials.. learned alot from your angeles one

  • if you know pretty mary k (either/or demo) OR stickman, i would be forever in debt to you, seriously. =)

  • that's great -- your explanations rock! bravo!

  • dude you are awesome !

  • Can you please do elliot's cover of thirteen off of thumbsucker. It would be greatly appreciated

  • man, i love that song. the main progression moves from a C to an F (with a hammer on) then to an Aminor, but i'll try to lay that out this weekend if i find some time to record it. thanks for checking the clips out, take care!

  • I love the fucking intro. its so good.

I think your fourth chord (after the C) sounds kinda wrong, i do a G6 (320000) which is probably wrong too, but idk your whatever you call it sounds wrong.

  • Hm, on my tab the 4th chord is C/B, and I think that sounds rather okay (we're talking about 'you won't but you might', right?). Cheers!

  • Nope, I was wrong, on a live version of between the bars you can see Elliott playing the exact same chord as the one Jeff uses. So, I think this version is quite accurate :)

  • I dont like how it sounds. It might be the audio. And you're right thats exactly how elliott plays it. Im probably just used to hearing the g6.

  • okay, if you do a tutorial for either hanging out with me, crazy fucker, or ANY other of the basement demos, i will be forever in youre debt lol pleaseee

  • Finally someone who doesn't suck at this cover.

Thankkk you I love elliott smith he's my hero.

  • hey is there any chanfe you have a tab for the music? I can't get all the chords right so it'd be really cool if you did. I really like all the tutorials you do, youre a good guitarist, and elliot smiths a really good muscician

  • Wow, these are great. Thanks for making them. I love your lower way of singing them too. You have a wonderful voice.

  • oops...you're totally right. :) i just realized it was tuned lower after listening it to again. I guess a capo on the third can transpose it up to this tuning. thanks for checking the clip out!

  • awesome tutorial, im pretty sure it's tuned down a whole step though, if you listen to the recording the bass thumps sound really low.

  • I love the into you've created and i also love how you say the frets if its a hard to see chord. It makes it much easier to figure out.
