This is engrossing listening. I like Chris Hedges. I recently discovered him on the special features footage of the Michael Moore film Capitlaism: A Love Story. He is a Puliitzer prize winning author. I loathe the cult of celebrity. I wasn't aware the Beeb devoted 3hr tribute to Jackson. Hedges is overstressing the Jackson scenario. I didn't watch his funeral, and by Hegdes, maudlin, lurid description, I'm glad I didn't!!! This is a depressing but eloquently expressed truthful oration.
@dminortheory depth invites depth. His discourse is beyond the capabilites of response of the unintelligent or ignorant. He appeals to our intelligence, our sense of what is right and good. We all know we live in a sick society where any slowing down of the economy breeds panick .... gotta keep it going out of a fear of feeling or facing the underlying despair and the unquestioned illusions which keep it all going.
I, for one, do not worship celebrities to the level he says people do.
In fact, most celebrities, if not all of them, are egotistical, self-important do-nothings, that don't give a crap about anyone or anything but themselves, and their wallets.
They think they are better than others and expect the world to bend over for them whenever it pleases them.
You, friend, are part of the aggregated American society. You, as part of it, are why the large corporate media syndicate exists as it does. Those syndicates, in turn, are what give all those do-nothing, insular, wallet-centric celebrities their positions here.
While you aren't responsible for it, You are responsible. Us together, We, are responsible.
As I don't worship celebrities, I do not feel responsible, nor should I feel responsible for their positions. I do however agree with your statement that, as a whole, we are responsible for what happens in this country, but, alas, we are surrounded by people who wish to remain willfully ignorant, and even aspire to be like them.
I do not support Hollywood nor do I own a television. I can only do my small part, hoping others will see and understand and do the same thing.
Chris Hedges, and although I do not agree with him on every single point, has got one thing right: we are ALL supportive cast members in this ongoing freak show, called celebrity culture, posing as human discourse.
There is nothing that can be done. Everyone in Washington is corrupt. The system made by the Fore Fathers has failed the American people. Electing idiots after idiots after idiots. They care nothing for the people, but only their own indulgences.

Who is this 'we' he's talking about?

"Don't you know who I am??", is their mantra.

The michael jackson bit was a bit overwrought.

Thanks Mox!
It would be wise of us to heed his words. As college students it's rather easy for us to find forms of activism and dialogue.
For those of you not in school, I would look into finding some venue for dialogue and involvement in your community.
Don't reserve yourself to being merely a spectator.
And remember, don't expect to change anyone until you change yourself. The revolution within will manifest a revolution outside of yourself.
