  • is this earl carpenter or michael maccarthy?

  • @DrinkOmally michael mccarthy

  • Like this Javert...has his very own way but still maintain some "quastness" (that really ought to be a word) in his voice.

Every production should make a CD!!! There are far too few recording out there!!

  • pretty frickin good man, great vibrato

  • The best last note on Stars that I've seen on Youtube. So perfectly in tune...

  • He was my first Javert I saw years ago - He was brilliant and I remember after he sang Stars the audience went mad :) Still get chills from re-watching this :)

  • Is Michael McCarthy playing Javert in this one?

  • I think Michael McCarthy and Philip Quast are the two performers with enough presence and gravitas to really carry this role

  • Michael McCarthy is the best Javert ever. He has a tendency to sing a wee bit flat, but his voice has a lovely richness.

  • Who is Javert? He's very good. I

  • Is Valjean Jeff Leyton?

  • and JAVERRRRRRRRRT!!

  • Javert is perfect, isn't he? =3

  • I love javert's intervention, why isnt included in the soundtracks?

  • Yay, Montparnasse looks like Montparnasse! He almost never does! And the last time I saw him, he was some big black guy with two-foot-long dreads. Talk about breaking the 4th wall. Sigh.

  • WOO FOR FEMINISM=D

  • This eponine is outstanding :)

  • this is terrible. Talk about phoning in - MM shame on you - remember, youtube are watching nowadays, you can't get away with it!!!!

  • do you have javerts suicide?

  • is madame thenardier gay soper? it sound like her!

  • that Montparnasse is a hottie! That Eponine is also adorable!

  • And when he goes 'gentleman'

  • I'd say both Javert and Thenardier here have a great lack of energy... it seems like they are bored acting.

Javert goes out of tune plenty of times! Just listen to his notes at 3:01, 5.30 and 5.40 (it's clearly low).

  • @oaiturriaga I prefer it that way- I feel it puts more relentlessness (is that a word)...

  • @oaiturriaga yah 5:40 is really off

  • @ImUrFanGirl a shame too because the rest of it is brilliant

  • who's thenardier? hes great!

  • i like this McCarthy fella

  • If only they'd included this scene in the TAC- too much acting I suppose

  • who is this thenardier?

  • This Javert is pretty good(McCarthy, if I'm to believe the consensus in the comments). However, there doesn't seem to be as much emotion in this rendition-very little in the way crescendos or decresendos or such. Some parts seem oddly rushed, too. There's plenty of power behind this voice though and definitely not a bad version to listen to.

I still prefer Quast, I doubt to hardly anyone's surprise. :)

  • I think this is Tim Morgan as Javert, i played Gavrouche in 1997 and 1999 with Gemma Wardle as Eponine, i believe this is also Gemma. Jeff Leyton was Jean Valjean. in 1999 i had the pleasure of having John Owen Jones as Valjean.

  • You were Gavroche!? That must've been awesome!

  • did you like john stacey? i find him quite scary! and you do know that you are on youtube! someone has posted les mis in london from 1999 with JOJ and john stacey. who was thenardier when you were in it?

  • I saw Les Mis on the West End recently, we had an understudy Javert who as actually really good, Jeff Goldblum if I remember correctly. Not as good at Philip Quast but I think he was better than Michael McCarthy.

  • Jeff Goldblum as Javert? Now that I would love to see.

  • Comment removed

  • McCrathy did a fantastic job here...

  • I kinda like this Javert, for some reason. Quast is of course, ten times better than this guy. Thenardier is terrible.

  • I'm going to disagree here , I think McCarthy plays it better than Quast,

actually live he is quite phenomenal , playing a more driven Javert eliciting more symapthy than Quast's bogeyman, and he has a tremendous stage presence. If you look at all the recent Javerts in the west End, ( especially the current one) it's Mccarthy they're imitating, not Quast

  • I actually really liked thenardier. He's more like the one in the book, more so than Alun Armstrong, for example.

  • I'll be getting the Complete Symphonic Recording cd from Amazon because Philip is my favourite Javert. He's is the reason why I'm in love with Javert. I love his " Everybody about your business, clear this garbage of the street".

McCarthy is ok and Norm Lewis is TERRIBLE.

  • Damn good

  • marius didn't look like he bumped into cosette

  • knocked the basket out of her hand..?

  • Philip Quast is the best Javert....who plays this one?

  • Michael McCarthy. He was the foreman in the Tenth Anniversary Concert (the one who says "Right my girl, on your way!")

  • Do you have the whole show?

  • Thenadier is Stephen Tate x

  • Javert is good...but he's a little flat...

  • This eponine is sensational! :)

  • Who the hell is that Valjean.. It's DEF not JOJ and it doesnt look like Jeff Leyton....is it?

  • no its not.. his name was Sean something I think ..

  • kingsley?

  • rubbish thenardier, awesome javert

  • javert is michael mccarthy.

  • This Javert rocks my face off. :D

  • You will answer to Javert

  • What a bad Thenadier !! :(

  • Who is this Thenardier

  • Very awesome, I like the Javert

  • 2.24-2.30 is my fave! SOOOOO STRONG

  • MY god, amazing!!!!

  • 2:24-2:40 is AMAZING...just perfect...

  • I really liked him when I saw him- But in this video he is missing some emotion!! But Still great though- When i saw him he was fantastic!!

  • Where was this? Is this in the West End? If I had seen this as a show, I would be sorely disappointed, there is no emotion in any of them bar Marius, and even then, hardly anything there! I'm surprised at McCarthy!!

  • not vulnerable or passionate enough. BUT thats unusual with michael mccarthy so its cool. lol.

  • That moment of silence when Javert enters is perfection...

  • oh... copuld you upload the Suicide with Michael? I'd die to see it...

  • Great!

He has the voice and he has the look. I love when Javert is so... strong-built. Like him and Philip. They should be tall and slim but strong. Ya know, bulldog. :D

  • I love Javert's Intervention. I wish they had kept it in the TAC, that's the only problem I had with the whole show. And Michael McCarthy comes a very, very close second to Philip Quast. My only complaint is his vibratto is really too strong for the part. Otherwise he's fantastic.

  • I think he was OK. The German Chris Muller is best, Quast second, and this guy def hits third. To me, it was just to "safe". Nothing special, but he was on key.

Every one about your business! Clear this vermin off the street!

  • This is great until Stars. Is that McCarthy playing Javert? I can't tell.

  • Um...that's McCarthy. That is most definately NOT Philip Quast. But they do sound and look somewhat similar.

  • wow I like this version very much ... all of them are very good~!!

  • what is that high pitched sound playing when javert starts to figure out that man might have been valjean?(3:30) it sounds so cool

  • that was really good...

  • I really liked this Javert.. Not as much as Philip Quast, but quite close:) Who played Thenardier? He was excellent!

  • does enyone knows what the name is of the girl who plays Eponine? she's realy goood!!

  • this is a really good performance

  • OHHH! thankx for posting this! They were good! where was this?!

  • 0_0; I totally didn't notice before... at 2:02 to 2:04 the flute playing is doing a trill tounge. SUPER hard thing to do

  • I love the way Javert always appears when Valjean gets in trouble like some sort of gypsi curse. And the part were he clears the street... it reminds me of how the illegal sellers on Mexico City run when an authority approaches.

  • I'll look them up, thx

  • I have trouble believing Montparnasse would let his hat fall off and roll around the stage...

  • I laughed so hard when I read that comment. SO, SO hard.

  • 1:29-1:45.

Classic moment is you ask me.

  • i love this song so much you can only love it

  • his to much vibrato makes the notes unstable and become flat. nice tone of voice though.

  • I actually think this is one of the better interpretations of Javert's part musically that I've seen. He does lack something in the part of acting, but I find that *almost* all Javert's have that problem.

  • I think thats because all Javerts are supposed to be played almost (I say almost) deadpan, becuz he is supposed to be a super serious "I dont take ANY nonsense whatsoever" kind of character...thats just my theory tho

  • Yes, if you have read the book, you know that he doesn't really show emotions and has that stoic look.

  • I disagree. In the comparable scene to this in the book, Javert shows a sense of humor as he apprehends the Thenardiers and their gang. He's also rather sardonic when he's caught at the barricades and sees Valjean there.

  • This is an awsome performance. This Javert may not know how to act, but he knows how to sing.

  • javert=BAMF

  • Not bad... He looks exactly like Javert should.

  • Is this West End/Broadway or amature?

It's way too good to be amature =]

  • ive seen a couple other vids by this person (dunno if their still here i havent checked in ages) but judging by the vocals im taking a guess at broadway, although i could be wrong

  • Valjean looked like JOJ so I'd assume it's professional. Plua did you see the set? I don't think an amatuer production could fund something like that.

  • This is London at the Queens theatre a few years ago; if you read the earlier pages of posts on this video you'll see the things we've already said about it. The Valjean is Sean Kingsley, John Owen Jones was still playing Phantom at this point in time.

  • Michael McCarthy also played the Foreman in the Tenth Anniversary Concert (he was Javert in London at the time). His "on your way!" was brilliant there.

  • i beleiev e this is west end cuase this cast is faeutered on the web site and the web site is all london cast pics

  • Oh No We Do This In Our Play :)

  • I Love This Play So Much!! We Didn't Do This Scene In Our Play But I Saw It In London <3

  • Beautiful! I never understood why this part wasn't including on the soundtrack... Thanks a million- Eponine and Thénardier made my day!

  • this is totally michael mcarthy right? have a cd where he sings stars pretty sure this is him

  • This Javert can NOT act.

  • Does anyone have Roger Alan? or something like that. London Javet.

  • Roger Allam only did about sixty performances before moving on to another play, so I'd be surprised if video footage exists anywhere.

  • Michael McCarthy plays javert in this. in my opinion, he is the 2nd best javert. the one and only true javert is philip quast..

  • @jetluga Hans Peter Janssens is AMAZING too!

  • Who's playing Javert in this one?

  • Great! You people should check out the norwegion version of this song. Just search for "Paul Ottar Haga". It is actually really great. And the little boy in the start, Gavroche, he is actually my friend!

    Les Mis is amazing!

  • Is Sean Kingsley playing Valjean in this? Help me someone! lol

  • Yes i think it is, the only other possibility is Tim Godwin who was understudy at the time, but i think it is Sean here.

  • This is the Broadway version, right? I don't recognize this part. Is there the Broadway version available anywhere?

This is class. Javert is by far the best character in the story.

  • No this is London- that scene before Stars has always been in the London show.

  • o.O really? I have the tape of the 10th Anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall and it's not on there ...

  • The 10th Anniversary is not the full London show - they had to make cuts to make time for all the special stuff at the end. Probably would've been hard to stage that bit in concert format.

Whilst we're on the subject did you know that Michael McCarthy (playing Javert in this clip) appears in the 10th Anniversary concert as the Factory Foreman? So there were two of the best Javerts on that stage at the Albert Hall; Philip Quast & Michael McCarthy.

  • Ahh, thanks for that :) Maybe a need to find a full version of Les Mis then ...

  • don't forget about norm lewis and robert hunt

  • This is in the Broadway show too, but not on the Broadway Cast CD. Get the Complete Symphonic Cast Recording. It has all the goodies left off of the standard 2 disc cast recordings. It's the complete show.

  • The scene is in every production--London, NY, etc. But yes, this particular tape is of the London show.

  • thanks :)

  • is there any chance you have footage from javert's suicide? if so could you post it? thx

  • Very good cast except for the thenardier.(nothing special about him, kinda boring)

  • have to agree. Shame cos that's a great part.

  • The Robbery/Javert's intervention is quality, one of my favourite bits in the show. Javert is clearly the best character, he gets the best songs/parts.

  • mercurialmaniac You are right he isn't a bad guy but in a story or show he is the bad guy becuase valjean is the protagonist and javert is trying to stop him from reaching his goals making the antagonists

  • Thenaidier looks like Christian Anderson

  • Yes indeed, Michael McCarthy. Thanks for posting this. I have seen him several times in the Palace Theatre 1997/1996 and for me he is the best javert ever. There is this one scene, when the fight at the barricade is over and the stage is turning and he sits in front of enjolras staring at the audience... fantastic.

  • It's almost certainly Phillip Quast.

  • It's Michael Mccarthy. And I know cos I was in it with him! And Gemma Wardle as Eponine

  • that was the worst thenardier ever

  • Does any1 no who played eponine in this video shes unreal

  • I think it's Gemma Wardle.

  • Thanks do u no where i could get a clip where Irene warren played her in the waest end we did a production and she directed we were priveliged!

  • Gavroche - lol! And Epponine's great too.

  • This guy pwns all other javert's.

  • This version's pretty darn good! Eponine has a wonderful voice, and so does Marius. Javert mixes his acting with his singing, making him one of the best Javerts i've ever had the pleasure to listen to! Bravo, 5*.

  • This will have to take 3rd place in my Les Mis casts... or it could tie for second with the complete symphonic... but my fav is definitely original London

I like Roger Allam the best, but this Javert is really good! Which cast is this? Could you tell me the year, too?

  • amazing - almost brings a tear to my eye. I always felt it for Javert and never considered him to be a "bad guy". He had a dedicated sense of justice.

  • Javert is considered more of a misguided antagonist. He's only doing his duty. The Thenadiers are the true villians of the story.

  • Yeah...in essence, he isn't a bad guy: His motivations, for the most part, are noble and virtuous. I think the song itself captures this marvellously, with allusions to St. Michael (as Lucifer fell) and the almost prayerlike quality of the final section of the song (Lord, let me find him). Orchestrations are brilliant in that they manage to convey a kind of majestic royalty, righteousness and purity, as well as powerful sense of there being a "hunt" (some of the french horn phrases).

  • Phillip Quast will always be Javert, ive met McCarthy and his voice really is nothing too special, brilliant baratone. Dont think he suited a musical, well... maybe I wrong, who knows?

  • Philip has the acting part and singing part of Javert mastered. McCarthy has a good voice but is not suited for Jsvert.

  • I finally find a stars video with Gavroche's part in it

    and he sucked.

    No offense to the guy

  • I love Javert's facial expression when Thenadier is singing "in the absence of avictim etc"!

  • Holy shit this is the greatest effing baritone solo ever. I love McCarthy -- I can't understand whoever said that he sang with no emotion. He. is. brilliant. Damn.

  • awesome!! It gave me goosebumps!!! I have the Original 1985 London recording on CD, and that Javert is no where near as good as him! The ending's even cut off of Stars! THAT'S THE BEST BIT OF THE SONG!! lol! Marius and Eponine were good too!

  • What a fien performance! This is by far one of the best performances of Javert's Intervention I have ever heard.

  • Micheal McCarthy played Javert

  • They're the same Thénardiers that I saw on the August 11th performance, great :D

  • who plays Javert?

  • I reckon Thenardier's acting is pretty weak i reckon

  • This guy has a really good voice. You don't happen to have the whole video of this cast, do you?

  • Do you have any videos of Randal Keith by any chance?

  • His voice is good, but he goes offkey several times. Maybe it was an off-night for him.

  • Micheal McCarthy Is An AMAZiiNG Singer! && a Really Nice Man... I worked With Him When I Was In This Show!! (This Was Filmed During My Time In The Show) I played Little Cossette.. But This Isn't My Team... I Was Team 3.. :D Miss This So Much :*( xXx

  • Am I the only one who really hated the Eponine? She sounded worse then Francis Ruffelle....

  • Michael was Javert when I saw Les Mis in London, and he knocked my socks off! :D He made me think Javert was awesome, but PQ made me fall in love with him. <3

  • I actually think Michael is a better vocalist then Phillip Quast. As for acting and the commanding presence, Phillip definitely wins.

  • I just saw Norm in Les Mis this afternoon. I think he's right up there with PQ :(

  • The only problems I have with the show is that 1. the fact that javert was a gypsy isn't addressed and 2. the amis should have had bigger roles

Michael is very good, but boy, is he unattractive-looking, love PQ!

  • i think theres something quite attractive about micheal.

and snaps for the amis thing, i still dont know whos singing what and which ones which! they come in, get drunk, then die. T_T

  • Javert isn't supposed to be attractive. In the novel, he has a snub nose, he's tall, and has a threatening energy and appearance about him. lol

  • Ah yes but enjolras is! And have you SEEN Micheal Maguire??? lol, haha still - touché!

  • Yeah... I remember the part when Thénardier's men even feared to shoot at him calling him Demon
