(cont)you should have only needed to boil for about 2 hours, more is fine but you only need 2 hours, then remove the excess bits of hide and pour it through a filter into another container (i used a plastic disposable cup with holes punched in the bottom and a paper towel in it) it should be a clear yellow liquid, you then let it set in the fridge like jello and it should have a consistency like jello once set. if you wanna keep it forever lay it out real thin and let it longer.
@bcgrover im sure it did, looked like it gelled just fine, but you could improve the colour and smell a bit and make it in less time by by boiling it for less time and filtering it then laying it out to dry.
also hide glue will go bad in time (as it is subject to bacterial decay) by drying it completely solid you can keep it forever (glue made over 200 years ago can still be melted and used today)
i love the stuff myself, easy to make, useful, makes nice lamination, great stuff.
if you use more processed raw hide it won't smell as bad. i used rawhides from the store but you could probably process them all the same by giving them a bath in lye (which you can make by putting wood ash in water)
also the sinew was unnecessary, the key ingredient in hide glue is collagen, sinew has much less of this (if any) and probably contributed a bit to that smell.
oh yeah and idk if you are a religious man but i have ye in my prayers. I've noticed you're disabled but still kickin'. Anyone really wants to challenge a nice thought then be my guest.
the sinew shoe laces. Crystals is not cheating..??...It is the same thing..but you are not subjecting everyone to the smell...especially if the work is being done in the house or basement..
Anyways it does Exactly the same thing...and it is clean and...if this is only one part of a job...saves time...I know of two area luthers and a violin maker...I live in a capital city and we have three orchestras...and lose lovely instruments need repair...and Lee Valley has two types...which is paramount
the easiest way to get hide glue...is go buy a whole bunch of leather shoelaces...the leather strips...cut them up real fine...boil...it can smell...so be warned...can't believe you are doing that in the house..you are a nasty man..your family will hate you...
or buy the crystals from Lee Valley Tools...and just use that...
@jetsonjoe no shoelaces. just buy rawhide dog bones. heat them till really soft. then take them out and dice them up like a carrots. you'll get lil spirals. cover w/ water. boil it for 3-5 hours and keep adding water to keep it covered. turn off heat. when warm pour into a cookie sheet and let gel. cut into 1" squares and let dry for a week. thread a hemp cord thru middle of pieces and string up like a clothesline in a dry place. dry a week. place dried glue in air tight container.
@WCherokeeW dogbones have no nasty smell at any time during the cooking process or after it cools. just a faint meaty smell. i made a very strong glue in 5 hours. the longer you boil it the darker and stronger it will be, but a decent glue can be cooked in 4 hours. the finished liquid will be a yellow color and the cooled liquid will feel like gel insoles. to use the squares, reheat with a tad of water.
@nkurnosenko Yes, I use the hide glue I made to attach the sinew. I'd suggest making some natural glue yourself. It's very easy. You can use hide pieces, animal hoofs or fish air bladders to make it.
If you can't make some, any white glue will work. I prefer a glue called Tite Bond III. Not sure it's available where you are.
@bcgrover the best glue for putting sinew on a bow is hide glue. the proteins in the glue bond with the proteins in the sinew. but naturally you can NEVER get yer bow wet unless you sew a waterproof covering over it. some natives sewed snakeskin over their bows but it wasn't a very common practice. mostly they hunted in dry weather. never in the rain.
bcgrover thanks for your great tutorial video, my problem is that there are a few words that I do not understand. Any way I will try to make my own glue. I've herd that the rabbit-skin is one of the best and easy to find, at list here in Monterrey México.
thanks for the great video but i need a little more advise. i t helped a lot though. do you anything about white tail sinew being illegal in virginia cause i cant find anything on the internet so if you do please tell me. and id also like to see another video of you putting the sinew in from a top view. thats all and all that would be helpfull.
@bcgrover oh and im making a crossbow and iwas wondering how long it would take and if you would make me a bow the size i need.im planning on getting one from someone like you but if it doesnt work ill make one myself. how long does it take to make one?
@ricochet365 Im pretty and would not be able to make you one. I'd suggest making it yourself. And the time it takes depends on a lot of factors. Just remember, it isn't a race. Trying to go fast will just usually mess things up.
@bcgrover ok so if i did make a bow you would suggest hide glue?if you do then should i buy hide or get the 5oz hide glue granuals?if thats easier ill do it.and whitetail sinew isnt illegal so how much should i buy?
@ricochet365 If you plan on backing a bow with sinew, then yes, I would suggest using hide glue. Make some or buy the granuals. I'd shred at least 8 rear leg tendons.
@bcgrover oh and im a little confused on which side you put the sinew on.and the whole recurve thing confuses me cause you said that it helps keep the string on but it looks like it would help the string come off.the curve looks like this ( and the the recurve goes >that way.
@ricochet365 Sinew goes on the back. You should make a few self (unbacked)bows before tackling a sinew backed bow. Also, I'd suggest reading the series of books called "The Traditional Bowyers Bible." That should answer any of your questions.
@bcgrover ok thanks.the recurve thing is the only problem.im making my bow for a cross bow and wanted it to be a good bow so itll only be 15ish inches.thanks for all the information! it helped a lot.
@bcgrover oh and theres a volume three one that looks more midevilish and im making a crossbow which means i want it to look more midevilish.so if you know if any of them talk more about mievil tell me and ill buy that one cause i want my crossbow to be nice.but if they all talk about the caveman bows ill try and make it look like a really midevilish bow. :)
Thanks for the awesome videos (the sinew-backing and the osage videos). They've been really great for my roommate and I (both aspiring traditional bowyers).
Anyone know if you can mix some sort of animal glue with pitch glue to get a combination of the properties? I'd like to try making a composite bow, but I don't like the idea of the glue coming undone with moisture. I think pitch glue alone would be to hard, but shouldn't a mixture give me a compromise?
And actually with thicker material like that you ARE suppost to boil it, you are wrong gaming4souls. It's with thinner material you simmer and not boil. He did excactly what your suppost to do.
That's some nice glue! You know, it is a lot harder to make hide glue with thicker materials (large chunks of rawhide) because they take longer to dissolve. But it still works. I like to throw a handful of Deer, WoodChuck, and Rabbit hide scrapings along with some scrap sinew into a coal-burned pot, but you have to make sure you have 4 dozen red hots rocks ready to toss in and boil for a few hours. Good job man.
haven't done it but i want to , but i read where you use the trimmings from the hide when you scrape it for tanning and mix it with water , boil it down until it becomes glue , nice video, i will try what i have heard and repost
By the time humans were making glue to back bows they had pottery, but there are other ways to boil water. That's basically all you need to do to make the glue.
I bought mine as a powder. Paleoaleo on youtube puts it in his mouth (the powder) that is. I was wondering how to get it from scratch thanks alot. By the way, how did paleoman do it/ Did they even have pottery? Or maybe heated rocks or something? Again thanks for the video. Joseph T (fly2000jtb)
First of all, you shouldn't call people "Idiots", it only shows your low level of intelligence and lack of respect.
I read many books, and talked to many experienced bowyers who made their own glue before I tried it myself. You say not to boil, you're wrong. I know people that boil for hours when making glue. I decided to go with a low boil/simmer.
My glue turned out great. Sinew backed a bow using it, and it still holding strong. So, as far as I am concerned, I did well. It was a success.
Hey man..nice job, fuck that other guy..people on you tube are fuckin losers...ive made my own from blacktail deer..it works great..ancient man was not dumb as most people think..early man never came from ape like creatures,,he was a skilled hunter and survivor......peace

@ricochet365 I don't THINK sinew is illegal anywhere. But I'm not a lawyer.
Call your local Department of Natural Resources and ask them to be sure. There are a few good places on-line to buy sinew.

Hello
Your idea to mix different hide glue (from different animals) ist bad.
Everyone hide glue have another typic mechanical property.
The worst is when you mix hide glue with bone glue.
The best hide glue is from rabbits.
I hope i could help you.
