We are brought to his flashback of what the "midnight circus" was.The girls are resigned to their fate as the ring leader continues to push them for the entertainment of others. As he grows tired of them he "cuts the rope" thereby putting them in a position where they have nowhere else to go and disappear for their loss of purpose. The boy finally realizing it abandons the empty circus in the end.

@YujieTheQueenJ If you look up the translation of the lyrics as well, you can see how it represents the entertainment industry in Korea. Where "idols" who have been trained since young how to dance and sing don't have any other career to fall back on when their company is through with them because singing and dancing is all they have been doing. in that sense they have "no where else to go". The disappearing of the girls represents how idols will be forgotten eventually.
