Oh man, the Emperor! That wrinkled old creep used to make me crap my pants when I was little! He was my worst nightmare! Not even Vader could scare me that much! Every time I remembered that corpse-alike face, those dark eyes, the black hood and his demonic voice I could no longer even think of even trying to fall asleep! And even now his imposing appearance makes me respect him and consider him the greatest villain of all time!
Of ALL the crap he DIDN'T change, why NOT change the cantina scene then?!! He always wanted better creatures and now he coulda easily done it instead hes messin around with other crap
GEORGE IA BECOMING CENIL AND WITH ILUISIONS OF GRANDEUR - THE SKY IS THE LIMIT . THERE IS NO ENDING TO ALL THE CHANGES HE IS MAKING . NEXT MOVIES WILL BE TOTALLY CGI - LIKE CRAPATAR
So the star wars the world likes he does not like and the star wars he wants on screen a lot of people feel is dull. Maybe the quirks and imperfections made out of the first 2 movies something no man conceived.
@Henry14arsenal2007 In the original novelization (published in 1976) Darth Vader is referred to as a "Sith Lord" and other Sith Lords before him are briefly mentioned, although not in detail.
@Henry14arsenal2007 That's a good question. If I remember right, I don't think the term, "Sith", was ever used in the original trilogy. I do think I remember it being used on a Darth Vader Iron-on back in the day, or in an official Star Wars/Return of the Jedi, magazine though, where it actually said, "Darth Vader: Lord of the Sith". I can remember seeing that as a kid and not knowing what the hell it meant, or it's context. Definitely something to look into.
I still have my original VHS recording of this from when it premiered on PBS. Why this has not been included on any of the DVDs is beyond me. It's an excellent behind-the-scenes look. Here's hoping it's finally included on the upcoming Blu-Ray set.
My childhood in a nutshell ... i'm still collecting starwars action figures ... have a shitload of them ... But i hide them whenever friends or girls come over !!! :-)))
All 6 star wars are my favourite movies of all time. While this may piss people off, I must say that I think it would be both incredibly cool and fascinating if george lucas attempted to re-create the original 3 today... now that he has access to more developed forms of technology.
@Fkouch, while i know a lot of people agree with you, i do think it is ironic that a lot of people agree with you. I mean, these movies were meant to be created in a technological age that could properly display George Lucas' intense imagination... 1977 isn't what i would call an advanced technological period compared to today.
@kirbienstien ...i love THX1138 but the "new" version with CGI added into the movie was unnecessary and looks so fake..i wish Luca$ would stop trying to "fix" his movies! they are fine the way they are...
People with the vision of Lucas come along every generation at the most. Episode 4 is probably one of the best films ever made. In these days of CGI, i really doubt anyone will come along with anything better in our lifetimes.
@robertmaniac heheheh, indeed, every excuse is good. btw, don't worry, once i also wasn't so sure about sith word in the old trilogy. but really i was "looking" for that in the old trilogy and didn't found at all.
to be honest the only effects that they should change in make the lightsaber effects better, other than that everything is amazing! i hate all the CG ships in I, II, III, real models give more life to the film plus amazing story!
@Reeclan plus you can make a lightsaber in adobe afterfects in all of 15 minutes... the old way was awesome, now everything is cheap, course we'll be saying the same thing in another 10-20 yearsdown the road
sounds like none of u get it...........waffling on about technicalities..............to REAL star wars fans, none of that crap matters mate...............
@psyjax -- i agree, Lucas has 'redesigned' the trilogy so many times, he forgot what the original vision was - STOP with the 'special, special limited enhanced editions' !!!!!
@MultiNomadman -- granted some directors know how to handle a 'special edition' release without sacrificing much of the original (Ridley Scott and Cameron to name a few) but COME ON - you're telling me changing Boba Fett's voice in Empire, adding that ridiculous dance number and transposing Vader's image with Hayden into Jedi was for the best ?? WTF Lucas doesn't care about the fans - money is the only thing on his mind !
Could you imagine a comparable intro for the new films? The original Star Wars saga had depth to it, actual substance. The new trilogy is just a collection of sterile CGI shots, with no characters, no tension and plot that seems to be a collection of actions that only serve to set up the next shot.
george was really a nice guy he gave the main stars 0.6 % of all royalties because they took such a small fee. harrison said that this gesture aloud him to be picky in his next movies he made a million in a second.
I think the first three films were a master piece. Later on the prequals it was a disaster. I think they went a little crazy with the cgi thing and it looked a saturday morning cartoons at times. They should have stayed with the original series recipe.
hard to believe that singing scene that confused me so much when i saw the dvd release was actually made back during the original with a puppet singer instead of a cg one
Watching all six in chronological order, it's interesting to see that Luke takes after their father in more ways then one, and Leia takes after their mother
Wow! Memories! Been looking for this doco. I watched it and taped it in NZ back in 1985, but then accidently erased over about a quarter of the program (horror!!) Hopefully Uncle George will included as an Easter Egg on the Ultimate Star wars Hexology Blu-Ray Box, whenever that comes out....
I have this on VHS still. Too bad they don't rerelease these old docs on DVD. I love the 'roughness' of these, mainly because they use a lot more on-set footage, whereas behind-the-scenes stuff on DVD's today is mostly talking heads.
why do you have to be so sick. Its one thing to do it in the real world but in your wackin computer chair is pathetic. You do know that their are decent people who come on here. Show you are decent and be the better person by not commenting to such filth with more Filth.
The Complete star wars saga (all 6 movies) is one of the greatest story's ever told -even IF 1,2 and 3 aren't AS GOOD as 4,5 and 6 when watched in order its amazing. Its designed to get better and better as you watch anyways. I love the prequels JUST AS MUCH as i love the 2nd half of the saga and i know a lot of other people do too.
No, Dude, get me wrong not. I am very grateful to God for George because he made us dream about something no other movie was able to do so. I said sahe on him because he tried to say that the computer generated/ninja moves bullshit movies are as good or even better than the old movies. The reality, the acting, the talent, and the SOUL wasn't there. In today's day and age watching the so-called AMAZING sequels is basically watching Power Rangers on the Cartoon Network. THINK ABOUT IT
I think I see what you're saying. It's not that you're saying he's a bad person, just that they've gotten so dependent on CGI, that they've lost the focus on the story and the former style of a space age folklore with layered characters.
These first 3 episodes were beyond the best. The other 3 where Lucas uses computer animation were disgraces. He said that people complain that the new Star Wars movies didn't feel real, and he said "Of course they are not real" But what people mean is that THESE older movies felt so real, they can actually made you feel you were there in the flesh. The new movies are an artificial,no-feel,I-can-see-the-computer-effects kind of shit. Shame on George. Episode IV,V, & VI Forever Classics
Disgraces?! I resent that. The first three were pioneering special effect masterpieces, along with a more than engaging story. The other three were no different, just utilizing the technology we have today.
You got to remember: George is a car enthusiast. And what do they like to do? Tinker and soup up their creations to make them better.
I thought George would be extremely different back then, have a different way of explaining things. The only thing thats different is the age and the neck.
Thanks you so much, I love this doc. God I miss the old ILM... Yeah this thing has my favorite Lucas quote. It'ss guided me on my journey into FX and Animation, and ultimatly makes me so sad when I see what's happened to SW, ILM and the whole Lucasfilm Legacy... "A special effect without a story is a very boring thing" oh George, truer words were never spoken old friend... we miss you.

Whilst I agree that the prequels weren't as good, saying "shame on george" is pretty sad, he gave you the orignals so be grateful.
Not to mention the fact that the prequels didn't suck, it just wasn't as good.
