I'd have to agree on waiting to mask up. Pull the line, drop the nozzle at the point of entry, while your waiting for water -- mask up. By the time you get water and pressure in your line, your hooked in and ready to go.
Yeah, this doesn't waste that much time and it also gives you the time to look at the situation and what you are about to get into. Time to give each firefighter, their own initial size up.

The way we look at this, is a safety issue. The time it takes to put the facepiece on versus having your vision impaired when you get off of the rig with it on. We feel that with the facepiece on when you get off of the rig, puts you at risk of missing something because of the mask blocking some of your vision. You could possibly miss things like a power line down that live, step into a hole that you might not see and many other hazards on the fireground.

I'm a Firefighter/ EMT in Ga. we wait to mask up also, don't take but 15 to 20 sec.
