tis true, many pianos aren't worth anything and are not worth fixing, selling or even donating. if the soundboard is old or cracked and the piano has not been tuned in years then you might as well shoot it into the air. i see old pianos in tucson all the time. that is the fault of the owners... this is people making use of *other* people's waste. there is nothing 'to get'...
they might use really broken down pianos, ones that might have had some mold or mildew (my uncle in florida had that happen to his piano) and sometimes, even if it is well cared for, it can happen. but the point? there doesnt appear to be one. But building trebuchets is cool, like 318 said.
O my ! Could anyone explain to me what this video is about ? Is there any political message in it ? I can't think of ANY other acceptable reason for anyone to set fire to a piano and fling it in the air. I mean, if there are too many piano in that country, send them to me !
im pretty sure pianos are often very expensive to transport and tune properly. you can commonly find them for free in the newspaper for those 2 reasons
Well, otacon, thank you for the suggestion but I was talking of ethic. What this video shows is revolting to me because there seems to be no rational, clever reason for it.
If you have to ask "why?" then you wouldnt understand even if I explained it to you.
A piano being thrown through the air...by a machine powered simply by gravity...thats pretty cool. Its all physics...I built one in 7th grade that was about half that size and threw tennis balls for a science project. If you built one (its easy) then you might understand why some people think its cool.

I understand but you've got to admit they could have chosen something better than a piano to throw into the air. What about a trunk ? Thing is, it takes a lot of time, patience and skill to make a piano. And a music instrument is something you can make art out of. So, excuse me but I still consider this is spoiling.
I guess some of you are bored and don't have anything else to do but set pianos on fire and swing them high and the air so they can break into tiny pieces. I don't get it.
Apparently you are so bored and don't have anything better to do than to sit and watch VIDEOS of people setting pianos on fire and flinging them high and the air so they can break into tiny pieces. I don't get it.
Okay, when did this actually go down? The night we were invited to provide music for this event (Thursday), it was scrapped due to "technical difficulties". The following night, still nothing doing -- the piano was still in place.
Late Monday night after the burn? Unpossible! There was a helluva white-out that evening. Either that, or there was scheduled to be more than one flaming piano toss, and you caught the Tuesday one.
No, not Monday. We didn't arrive till maybe midnight, and then the pre-Man burn, and then bed by 3am, so it must have been Tuesday...or Wednesday. Not Thursday. Let's go with Tuesday and be happy.
What a bunch of woo ha ha drunks... LMAO! Those were the days *sigh*

Why did they do it? Because:
a) they could;
b) if they didn't, someone else would;
c) it just HAD to be done.
Maybe you had to be there. If you were, you probably wouldn't ask "why"? It was amazing and I'd love to see it again.

I've heard many pianos that have been kept so badly they deserve this fate.

We arrived late Monday night, so it must have been the next day, just after sundown.
