They're judo. They're also sambo, and freestyle wrestling if you wish to look at it that way, but national-level judo competition is probably where Fedor developed his throwing ability.
Every single grappling technique I've seen Fedor use in MMA is regular judo. Except for the one or two leglocks he's tried, I guess.
Yep, it's sambo as well - judo and sambo are so similar. Fedor himself has said he "prefers judo and sambo".
Before Fedor took up MMA, he practised judo at the national Russian level, and sport sambo. As far as I know, he only took up combat sambo AFTER he'd started MMA competition.
National-level judo competition is probably where he developed his grappling SKILL though - the competition in Russia is incredibly tough.
Wow! Seeing him fight is like a totally diferent vision of the fight itself. Many perfect executions, and a mobility that looks like he's flowing with the wind, it's simply another level.
I long for he's return, of course there are other fighter's like him such as Lioto Machida and Anderson Silva, but Fedor is in a another level of skill, simply unique.
russian school! With only two team the russian sambo dominate the ring of the world. it's funny if you think the mma and submission aren't popular in that land.when milion of russian grappler work for adaptation
in this new rules, the grappling will enter in new dimension.
regardless of the skill and technique difference i still don't understand how can a 6ft(183cm)person dominate a 7ft(over 210 cm)person. There are many people who can win over a fighter like tim sylvia but i didn't believe it was possible to dominate and overpower a man like him or hong-man choi if you stand only 6ft tall.
I bet Nog still doesn't know what the hell happened. He and his friends can comment on Fedors sloppy technique etc. but the way Fedor manhandled Nog... it's just poetry! I don't know any other way to describe it....
thats funni when he got that pucnh from Japanease guy and Fedor recovered quick from that KO pucnh and still won the fight =) or when Silva gave him that slam i though he broke his neck but the fedor again won the match .. fucking undeafeted machine cant destroy =) Fedor is the number 1 =)
Randy IS stronger in the clinch. Randy IS the better ground CONTROL technician.
No one said anything about grip. No one said anything about MORE skills on the ground.
Randy is better equipped with the proper SKILLS to handle the ground control that Sambo stresses. Please don't reply since you can't read properly anyhow.
I honestly believe he will retire undefeated, nobody is close to beating him, deffinitly nobody in the HW division. I mean there is a few people who have a "slight" chance. but nobody compares to him, hes beat the best, never took a defeat, that makes him the best in my book. Oh yeah, did i say no weakness?
nice comment bro... is true.. his strenght in combination with speed and skill... he took advantage of everything to win in whatever way: submision, ko, ground-pound...
how he turn and made the ambar to coleman is priceless...
Yep...Line up whoever you have or get Affliction, because hes gonna run threw them, UFC dont want none either. Randy? I think he will put on a better fight then Tim, but in the end there is no way Fedor will lose.
Both are at a point where determination and focus are their strong points and I think Fedor has seldom fought anyone with the same mental toughness except for Big Nog. Randy is stronger than Big Nog and has the skills to defend sambo ground control, where BNog didn't.
Decision fedor, but if it goes that far it will be close.
There are a couple of two words that define Fedor: "Number one", "The best", "The beast", ..., and finally "Fedor Emelianenko"

Every single grappling technique he has used is Sambo as well (including leglocks) and it's what he claims as his major style.
Yes, he trained Judo but his focus has been sambo for a long time. Until he switched to pure MMA.

Fedor did in 36 seconds to tim sylvia what randy couldn't do in 25 minutes. Enough said.

you're probably right which is why Fedor wants to fight him. Fedor only wants to fight the athletes who use their best techniques
