The problem with any marketing campaign is that it depends on a product that people might potentially want. If your soap is lousy, all that a viral campaign will do is spread the word about how lousy your soap is.

Nothing is new about the principal concept. Its much older than your barbers shop. When the wheel was invented people told each other how to make it. Nothing new. BUT: The internet makes it possible to reach 1 mio people in 7 days via a stupid video on youtube. You would have to run a long way to tell 1 mio people how a wheel works :-)
