Second Life is not for 'developers', it's for artists. YOU being an idiot and not creative, could never be happy working with that environment. For me, Second Life was really fun for a while a few years ago. But more recently they've made their servers and everything overall more graphics and CPU intensive, and everything's gotten a lot more confusing too.

I make my RL living in SL. I have been in SL for almost 5 yrs. I have met thousands of people from all over the world. I have even employed people who can not work in RL, There is a lot to do in SL - it is a social network just like facebook, but it is so much more. SL helps disabled people the ability to do things they can't in RL. A word of advice - It is better to keep you mouth shut and let everyone think you are an idiot, then to open it and remove all doubt!!!

i have been in Second Life for some years now, and I only stumbled across a few porn places, i didn't actually search for it, so i asume Second Life can seem like a place for porn, if YOU SEARCH FOR PORN ...if not, then (in my experience) Second Life is full of shops, clubs, and places that looks like designers experimenting/playing around, building stuff that seems "pointless", or maybe advertising for something.. but nice places to hang out, ignoring whatever the creaters had in mind..
they actually just tried to make it all flashy and new and all they did is make everyone leave second life. it would have been a huge deal if they stayed at version 1, just fixed the bugs and everything. i actually loved playing it back then. now it's expensive, you need to give them all your data to verify your age so you can enter all areas and all this shit.. there is nothing special about it anymore, nothing interesting, nothing secret. it's just plain boring and complicated.

It's not really a game to me or a new piece of software to great features. It really is at least at it's core a basic tool compared to say Maya 2011 etc to become part of maybe someday if you're good and like trying to achieve pipe dreams of being part of a real game company like blizzard to build awesome games and get a real solid paycheck doing it. Lots of great minds to go there to learn and test their skills. That's what I make of it at least when I jump into it.

Research before you speak in future. Gambling was removed 4 years ago and 'porn' as you put it, was moved to 'adult' zones which are a very small percentage of the land zones in SL. I have been on SL for 4 years, and I am a builder with no affiliation with porn or gambling. Maybe when you logged on, you went to look for these things. Doesn't mean every one else in there does.
@PayneProdutions I find 80 Billion active players a bit too farfetched, first off the world population is around 7 Billion, alot of people play with one or more accounts, and the average past 30 day amount of residents logged in is usually under 1.5 million, I would place number of active players probably closer to half a million, but odds are its less than that, possibly less than a quarter million.
Second Life is only as exciting as you make it. If you go into it thinking you'll only find porn and gambling, you're not going to find anything but porn and gambling. You have to actually LOOK for things. If you go into it expecting entertainment to just be handed to you, or expecting to have your hand held, Second Life is not for you.

In 2006, seen the first person to become a millionaire in real life from the proceeds they made from their business within SL. NBC, The Weather Channel and a number of fortune 500 companies STILL thrive within SL. RFL a huge contributor to the Cancer Society works year round in SL and Donate 100's of thousands Due to SL RFL. Educate yourself with the facts Chris.
I have been in Second Life since beta testing. I have seen SL develop and grow into the fantastic forum it is today. Live musicians performing for crowds of listeners, enjoying, dancing. These musicians get this opportunity to have their music heard, their talents shared and some even get help with record and producing CD's for real life sales. Where in real life they can't get a so called professional to stop and listen. SL is far more then what you try and convey here. .

Lockergnome is only discussing two popular aspects, instead of giving an overview of the entire spectrum that makes SL what it is. If you take the time to travel around, you will come across places where they play music... Where art is constructed... Capture the flag is played, or people reenact their favorite movies, and so on...

I make my RL living in SL. I have been in SL for almost 5 yrs. I have met thousands of people from all over the world. I have even employed people who can not work in RL, There is a lot to do in SL - it is a social network just like facebook, but it is so much more. SL helps disabled people the ability to do things they can't in RL. A word of advice - It is better to keep you mouth shut and let everyone think you are an idiot, then to open it and remove all doubt!!!

I used to think the same thing about secondlife. I couldn't understand what the appeal was about spending money to buy intangible clothing to go to an intangible club and waste my time... I didn't sign in again until two years later, when my boyfriend showed me that you can roleplay on it.

You really should not post answers to questions when you don't know the answer. You expose your ignorance of the reality of Second Life. It is full of tons of content besides porn, and gambling has been gone for years. Apparently you are unable to "think outside of the box" when you can not see the potential for the future of all types of communication services and economic potential in Second Life. There is so much more to SL and real life then porn and gambling - open your eyes.

i have been in Second Life for some years now, and I only stumbled across a few porn places, i didn't actually search for it, so i asume Second Life can seem like a place for porn, if YOU SEARCH FOR PORN ...if not, then (in my experience) Second Life is full of shops, clubs, and places that looks like designers experimenting/playing around, building stuff that seems "pointless", or maybe advertising for something.. but nice places to hang out, ignoring whatever the creaters had in mind..

they actually just tried to make it all flashy and new and all they did is make everyone leave second life. it would have been a huge deal if they stayed at version 1, just fixed the bugs and everything. i actually loved playing it back then. now it's expensive, you need to give them all your data to verify your age so you can enter all areas and all this shit.. there is nothing special about it anymore, nothing interesting, nothing secret. it's just plain boring and complicated.

It wasn't meant to be exciting or revolutionary. -- Over exaggerating is all you did in this video.
You seem to forget that it's all user generated content, and that not all users that play SecondLife for sexual adventure, although it is a good way to sell things in that direction of the market as some, sad, people would pay dearly for them.
But that said, you really exaggerate too much -- All that happened is people got bored of it after a while as better platforms began to be released.

I find Second Life more and more interesting the more I get into the art and machinima scene. Both are tremendously challenging and can really be quite beautiful. It's not all porn and gambling. I think of it as a canvas and a place to wear strange and outlandish masks.

For the record, I've never gambled or had sex in Second Life, and I continue to find it a stimulating and rewarding experience after four years. I love the art and music and even the squabbles. I think it's a mistake to talk about Second Life only in the past tense.

It's not really a game to me or a new piece of software to great features. It really is at least at it's core a basic tool compared to say Maya 2011 etc to become part of maybe someday if you're good and like trying to achieve pipe dreams of being part of a real game company like blizzard to build awesome games and get a real solid paycheck doing it. Lots of great minds to go there to learn and test their skills. That's what I make of it at least when I jump into it.

Being that it's a 2010 video. I'd like to add Chris yes there is a lot of that content in the game. I think it's because lack of developer direction. The good side to it is. I look past all that as I use it as a platform to learn how to build or import my work from outside programs like Maya 2011 and mudbox 2011. I am using second life to keep myself motivated to build something people would like to buy. Without having a boss firing me if I become lazy/unproductive lol.

For those of you who say anyone playing SL have no life; as true as that may be for some people, Ill have you know that I went to college, got a degree, have a full-time job and take care of my family that lives with me, all while playing SL in my SPARE time. Its a cheap easy way to find things to do and keep in touch with friends and family. I for one use it as a way to spend time with my RL sister who I can't afford to visit in RL very often. How is that having NO LIFE?

Research before you speak in future. Gambling was removed 4 years ago and 'porn' as you put it, was moved to 'adult' zones which are a very small percentage of the land zones in SL. I have been on SL for 4 years, and I am a builder with no affiliation with porn or gambling. Maybe when you logged on, you went to look for these things. Doesn't mean every one else in there does.

@PayneProdutions I find 80 Billion active players a bit too farfetched, first off the world population is around 7 Billion, alot of people play with one or more accounts, and the average past 30 day amount of residents logged in is usually under 1.5 million, I would place number of active players probably closer to half a million, but odds are its less than that, possibly less than a quarter million.

Second Life is only as exciting as you make it. If you go into it thinking you'll only find porn and gambling, you're not going to find anything but porn and gambling. You have to actually LOOK for things. If you go into it expecting entertainment to just be handed to you, or expecting to have your hand held, Second Life is not for you.

The creators of sl show profit every quater do to how much people like it and microsoft is looking to buy it now that it is so big. Chris, you truly do need to do more research. You would find that in 2004 the real life band Duran Duran held a live concert in SL. In 2006, seen the first person to become a millionaire in real life from the proceeds they made from their business within SL. NBC, The Weather Channel and a number of fortune 500 companies STILL thrive within SL. RFL a huge contributor to the Cancer Society works year round in SL and Donate 100's of thousands Due to SL RFL. Educate yourself with the facts Chris.

I have been in Second Life since beta testing. I have seen SL develop and grow into the fantastic forum it is today. Live musicians performing for crowds of listeners, enjoying, dancing. These musicians get this opportunity to have their music heard, their talents shared and some even get help with record and producing CD's for real life sales. Where in real life they can't get a so called professional to stop and listen. SL is far more then what you try and convey here. .
