I want to ask a question: should I pray to the Father in Jesus' name or directly to Jesus? Please advise and I would appreciate if you could support your answer by the bible. Thanks in advance.
@Fightingfire1 hi! ru a believer? God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit are all 3 distinct persons in 1. when we accept Jesus as our Savior, God's Holy Spirit comes to us to seal us with the Salvation God arranged for us through His Son's death and resurrection. the Spirit comes in to our life to Help us know God and His Son. the Spirit helps us know God and comforts us that who Jesus is and what He says about God and people is all True. God has many names. He is our Provider, our Shepherd,
@linimo87 Yes I am a Christian. I have been praying to the father in the name of Jesus all my life. lately I have felt the need to pray also to Jesus directly. I then thought that Jesus himself asked us to pray to the father, so I have started to think that maybe what I did was not right. But on the other hand I wanted to pray to Jesus and thank him personally for his sacrifice and love. Thats why I wanted to see what other believers think about that. So to whom do you pray? Thanks.
@Fightingfire1 God. this is because of things i have been through. He's making it more personal for me and Him. i dont know if i am helping. but this is a snapshot of my dialogue with the Lord. i call Him by how i know Him and by seeing who He is in scripture. the Bible is not always explicit in words on what we need to know. for example, you are saying uh oh, the Bible didnt tell me i could pray to Jesus. this might be you or it might be the enemy. the Bible would never tell us we cant pray to
to Jesus. that is legalism, which is exactly what Jesus confronted constantly during His ministry. He teaches us who He is- He is of the Father. He is God's son. in essence He is God. we can call on both. please dont be worried about that question you have. the Bible tells us in John that the Word IS God. you know that 'the Word' in that scripture talks about the One who created the world. "He was with God and was God." this refers to Christ, who is the wisdom and power of God. Christ is the
@linimo87 the Word. not "the Bible" but the Living Word of Life. Jesus exhorts us to look for Him IN the scriptures (sorry i dont know that verse right now but it is a verse from Christ). He is to be found IN the God-breathed scriptures. so if He is in the scriptures, and TELLS us He is, why would "the Bible" imply or tell to not pray to Christ, only God? the Word IS God! it is Christ! it is Life. Jesus WANTS relationship with you! you, personally! call Him by name!! :)
@linimo87 and when we pray to Jesus, we know we are praying to the Messiah, to Christ, Emmanuel, the Savior of the world, calling Him by His personal human (Hebrew) name ('Joshua' in english). it is good with God to be personal once He is our Savior! that is exactly why Jesus Christ came. to redeem, and get personal.
Jesus says in john 10:30 that He and the Father are ONE, and in luke 10:21-22 He says we can only know the Father by accepting and getting to know Him (Jesus). another link is gotquestions dot o r g slash pray-Jesus-name
if these links dont make sense, please write back and i can email them to you. we pray in Jesus' Name because He is the One whom GOD set up to RECOVER authority over evil and sin after satan gained power on earth when he fell from heaven. praying in Jesus' name is power God gives us for victory against satan's power in the world and for our own sin to be forgiven by Christ.
we can call on any of the three persons because they are all of God. God knows when we are speaking to Him, or to ourselves, or to devils. sometimes i speak, "God..." sometimes i say, Holy Spirit, or Spirit, and sometimes i say "Yeshua/Jesus" the same God hears all of these prayers, sometimes my spirit in me just wants to address a different aspect of His character for how im feeling or what situation im in. for example,
sometimes i call on Jesus or the Spirit when i want to be comforted, when im resisting the devil from tempting me, or i want to feel God's close company. the Spirit is the part of God that is close to me and lives in me. it is Christ's Spirit, and Christ is God's Son, so He is OF the Father. they are intimately interconnected. you can speak directly with God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. they are all persons and the same God. you can pray in Jesus' name to assure yourself or an evil spirit of the
authority Christ has to save us and protect us. you can speak directly with Jesus by calling Him by name. hebrews 4:14-16 says we can come boldly into God's presence for help when we are in need. Christ is on the throne in heaven with God (hebrews 1:1-3, 13-14; 8:1-2; 10:11-14; 12:1-2). we are talking to both of them. they are a unified unit. in ancient days, any sons were know by their father. its the same with Christ. He has the authority His Father has. the Spirit of God (and His Son) is
always in us and with us to help us live the new Life Christ gives us. i hope something in my explanation helps address your thought. write back if you want to talk more! God bless you~
@linimo87 1/2 thanks for your comments. So I understand that you pray to all 3 persons of Trinity depenting on the circumstance and your need. As far as I am concerned I usually pray to the Father in the name of Jesus because this is what Jesus tought in the Bible. However sometimes I also prayed to Jesus. My problem is that afterwards I thought that maybe what i did was wrong because there isnt any verse in the bible showing us that we should pray to Jesus.
@linimo87 however since Jesus is the Lord of Lords and King of Kings, since I have accepted him as my Lord my King and my Savior I cannot understand why I should not also talk to him directly. But again the final authority in these issues must be the bible and we should not trust in our heart or logic. So I am a bit confused and this is why I wanted to see what other believers do. Also when I pray to the father I end my prayer "in Jesus"name. When you pray to Jesus how do you end your prayer?
@Fightingfire1 hey! im glad you wrote back. and im glad i will get to meet you one day on the other side! thanks to the Lord! i tried to talk clearly. to answer your last question directly, i dont commit myself to end my prayer any one specific way. often i end with thank You, because i have been learning as He grows me in prayer that thanking Him affirms my trust in Him and His promises in the Bible. His promises always refer back to Christ, because like you said He is Lord of Lords. He is the
One and only one who "finished" it for us. so i thank Him, because its personal. i thank Him also to confirm my expectation for His care and answers to my requests.
when i am feeling tempted by my own sin nature (james 1:14) or realize i am being attacked by our enemy, i ask for and declare things in Jesus name to send the enemy on the run. calling on Jesus when i am tempted to give in to something wrong keeps me in His Grace. i keep a prayer dialogue going (on paper and in my thoughts/words) with the Lord. i ask Him questions. i tell Him what i feel. i mark places in the Word where He promises His children something, and i ask Him to Help me work
those promises into my memory so i can pray with more effectiveness. "the promises of God are a bridle to prayer." i cant think of the name of that preacher right now, sorry... God definitely desires us to talk with Him. since the persons of God are all God, we can address Him as any of those. and He wants us to call Him by His names (try to get on that link 'names of God' or google for yourself). Jesus said that what we do unto 'the least of these' we do unto Him, and i also
mentioned the verse where He says if we know Him we know His Father, God. Jesus represents His Father then, so when we talk with Him we can call Him by either. it is good and right to pray "in Jesus' name." but if we dont sometime, He's not gonna cancel out our prayer. its more complex than that. we have to get acquainted personally with Him to know His names, and learning His names draws us closer to Him. we also need to look for His promises in the Bible that are fulfilled in Christ.
.. and pray those promises to Him. God knows when we are praying to Him. i am learning the power of Jesus' name in my life and in my prayers to God. His name is so pure and true and powerful. when i pray, i constantly mix "Lord" God, Yeshua, Spirit, Jesus. i just get as personal as i can (who else can i be so personal with? Jesus knows those that are His and that we Love Him. He does not demand we consistently talk with Him a certain way. since i dont know you personally, i cant tell your heart
@linimo87 (short insertion- we are in GRACE now. we dont have to 'come to HIm' a certain 'way'. again, hebrews 4:16. please read it! also read 4:14-16. but our heart toward God matters. He does give us a study guide for HOW to pray (the
Lord's prayer, which shows us there are many things that need prayer- prayer is needed for victory and salvation for others, for God's will to be done, we need personal prayer, we need battle prayer against the enemy). i often begin my prayers with how Good God is from experiencing His care personally. i think Him for things He Helped me with that day or week. i learn what to look for to thank Him by reading the Word (psalms is really good for learning how to praise God and for what things
@linimo87 specifically to thank Him. i tell Him my concerns. i ask Him for specific Help. i pray for others and ask for blessing for them. i give Him my raw emotions. if i am ticked off, i tell Him, trusting in His Grace to accept me and Help me through that emotion. i tell Him to keep Helping me every day. sometimes i even tell Him i dont want to talk with Him when im really afraid or having a momentary meltdown. What a convicting message! Sometimes we forget the power of the Holy Spirit within us and we cave in to our fears and problems. Thank you, I needed this message at this moment! God bless you!

Amen, praise our beloved ADONAI! AMEN! I'm in tears with this blessed, HOLY SPIRIT inspired message of hope made in the love of our MESSIAH YESHUA. Thank YOU ADONAI for this conviction with in me, thank YOU ELOHIM for breaking me. I reach up to YOU for all my blessings, guidance, direction, and leadership. "we think there is no cost/consequence to the things of the world"...that is the great deception. for the wages of sin is death. the greatest of, and source of all our sins: unbelief. Why did the Israelites perish in the wilderness? Why did they not enter into his rest? Unbelief. We say we believe in God, in Jesus, etc. But how often we are shown to be liars in how we walk. The just shall live by faith.
Not just any faith. Jesus' faith. Not your faith (that is, not man-made faith). But God-given faith. Faith that is alive. Faith that comes from the Author and Perfector of it. Whose faith are you living by? Are you living by your man-made faith? Or are you living by the faith that comes from the Son of God that endures forever? If you are Christ's then what is his is yours too-including his faith. May his life be your life, his all your all. That is the gospel of God-Jesus Christ.
1 John 3:4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
Titus 2:11-12 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
Philippians 2:12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
Thanks Tim. What a powerful message and just what I needed today to let the light in and clear out the shadows in my life. You are God's Best. Love, Mom
thanks so much for sharing. Please do keep them coming. God bless your ministry brother. America needs voices like yours...well, so does my country actually...
