If Hakkinen had one more drop of ketchup on his sandwich that morning, he would've lost that. Mesmerizing spectacle... Pretty sure these are the best memories for both us and the drivers.
The Hakkinen/Schumacher rivalry was one of the greatest in the history of F1. While the FIA seems to have finally settled on a qualifying format that they are happy with, I never understood their dislike for the old 1 hour/4 timed laps format. Some of the most exciting memories of F1 that I have came out of the qualifying sessions with that format. I still have the entire '98 season on VHS. I think I'll watch it again during this off season and relive one of the most exciting seasons ever.
Mika, one more year! =)
Schumacher should have been on pole here. He had the fastest car and Barrichello had been played with (Schumacher swapped cars with Rubens on Friday, when Rubens times were faster).
Man, this brings back lots of memories and emotions, i still remember when i was in Finland as a little kid watching this at my Grandmother's house with my father and my uncle's. Oh man did we all scream out of enjoyment, Mika Häkkinen, a living Legend, and so is Schumacher.
These were the days qualifying was an epic battle on its own.Nowdays it's a private property.I mean what is more important for this sport?.I think it is to enjoy the fans watching it.Is it happening now?.I don't think so.Come on,it's time to let the personal and finnancial interests in second plan and it's time to give this sport back the huge entertainment and spectacle it had.
Clash of the titans. It may have been only 2 drivers going for the championship, but it was two of the greatest drivers of all time at the height of their powers with the two most powerful teams in F1 behind them.
There's a lot going on during this lap, Mika is driving like million kmh, accelerating, braking, steering, putting everything on the line, not enough, still not enough, schumi takes it... and in the end brings the stars and the moon right here in front of us :D The guy just fits all that to he's speach during the lap.
How the hell can he put so many words together, what is there to talk about so much during a qualy lap...lol... what is he saying ? And they say the Finnish ar supposed to be quiet people.
Ah, the good old days of F1 :') Back when you had to have money or actual driving skills to be in F1. Hakkinen, Alesi, Prost, Schumacher, Berger, Senna the list goes on and on.
Never liked McLaren and Hakkinen on those days, but with the passing by of all of these years, i appreciate the talent, coldness for executing crucial laps and the off-track sensibleness of Mika. Because of qualifying sessions like this one, he was definitely GROSSO....
Look how brilliant the McLaren looks with that colour scheme...and the West logo, fuckin brilliant. Instead of the shiny crap they have nowadays...sigh I still love the team though. Lewis is fuckin brilliant but does he have legendary Mika's speed? A bit doubtful.
Great, great days of the sport. I vividly remember watching this slack-jawed on te edge of my seat at the performance of these two legends of the sport, knowing that I was heading to my first GP in Silverstone two weeks later, this got me really excited! Although I'm a Schumacher fan, I've always had tremendous respect Mika, Michael's most talented and consistent rival, and dare I say it, the faster man over one lap with raw speed in spades.
Announcer: "And häkkinen drifts rivage-corner sideways.. there is now change anymore.. schumcher will win... 10 seconds later: OAOOOOJOOJOJOOI MIKA WINS! MIKA! MIKA! MIKA BEATS FERRARIS"
I loved that old announcer and free F1 on tv.. and i love both häkkinen and schumi.. great times!

Never again since Senna have I seen such a determined F1 driver like Häkkinen - that is pure "Sisu" in action! I really miss the old times with those names on the boards...
Amazing lap, really incredible. He pushed as hell on that lap. Ran a bit wide on the exit of the 'Variante Alta'-chicane and almost lost it on power after the last chicane to accelerate down the mainstraight. Still got a very good lap time!
It was always amazing to watch the fight b/w the tow :) amazing times.I thought F1 was at it's peak then. One more thing I would like to say that whenever I see Schumacher driving he just fits so well in the car and drives it like the part of his own car :).
@go2wrona12 No worries. Hakkinen was my favourite driver before, dad and I watched all F1 races and rooted for Mika. But in my opinion this was not his most impressive qualifying performance. He had many others....
@jockejocke1 He was my favourite driver too. I was hoping that he will be the world master three times in a row so it would make him the first man who did it.
Back in 1994 Schumacher was interviewed and he told what he thought about his competitors. When he talked about Hakkinen he said:"When it comes to speed, Hakkinen is seriously fast. Unfortunately he hasn't driven a good car yet."
Well that changed in 1998...
David Coulthard moved from Williams to McLaren in 1996 and when he drove the 1995 McLaren he said it was practically undrivable and had a terrible chassis which was very twitchy and unpredictable.
