How can you reasonably ask for a $20,000 donation as opposed to, say, and investment? He wants someone to shell out 20 grand without receiving A. His money back once the film is released and B. A cut from any royalties? That's insane. I know others have mentioned this, but, what if the film doesn't get made? You're just shit out of luck? Rolfe just pockets your cash?

My guess is the script was pitched to small-time investors who turned him down.
I doubt that the film's going to receive a major theatrical release. After all, the AVGN might be popular among fat lonely people on the internet, but he doesn't have the amount of popularity needed to make a major motion picture. After all, if you were to ask somebody who the AVGN was, there's a 90% percent chance that they'll have no idea who that is. He better get really popular really fucking quickly, otherwise his movie will get barely any coverage. It might air on Sundance Channel at 5 AM-
What fucking quality could you expect? James fucking Cameron? The New Rocky Horror Picture Show? Yeah I don't think so when there is almost no legitimate return in terms of entertainment when I could scroll down your movie list anyways.

In James' defense he's only doing what any Indy film producer would do pre production: Get money. Producers go left and right asking companies and organizations for for donations and investments, James just has a fan base he can lobby. Almost no independent films are made with person funds, film makers just don't have that kinda money.
Also, indie filmmakers don't ask regular joes for cash, they ask banks/people with money. Problem is, the fans will pay for the movie and get none of the profits.

Bear in mind, too, that 75k is still low-budget and that is going into an entertainment product, not a personal luxury and he may be wanting to make it more than just a review but to also spread himself out some more from his routine. @seirahime Almost all of that 75k would be spent on buying the best fucking camera ever, with every D that ever was for the Super Realistic Awesome Edition, then you'd have to give away your house to see it. The normal cut would be filmed with an ancient phone camera with a plastic cup for a microphone, to see this one you'd have to sell your vital organs.
He already has that camera, note the camera he used already to make the begging video. He has a HD camera with an adjustable lens. Also youtube money, gametrailer money, screwattack money, merchandise, ad revenue. He doesn't need to beg for money.

I don't think James is a good actor, especially if its scripted, and you can tell, there was no plan of events in the originals, but now, he actually makes a script of sorts before he actually records everything. But times change, I guess.

I don't see the big deal. It's not like James Rolfe is actually demanding money from you. you only donate if you want to. There are many people that have a couple bucks to spare. Sure, that's a lot of money for those relatively lame "perks" but that's for those with a lot of hard cash. Not for middle-class people like most of us. In James' defense he's only doing what any Indy film producer would do pre production: Get money. Producers go left and right asking companies and organizations for for donations and investments, James just has a fan base he can lobby. Almost no independent films are made with person funds, film makers just don't have that kinda money.

I think maybe James though it would be easier the get money for the film through online donations rather than asking for a loan from the bank. @MagnusTheSnake To be honest it just sounds like he's taking advantage of his fans. If you don't want a loan from a bank then you turn to companies or individuals. In the real world the company or person involved would invest the money; not just donate. If I was to give money to James, let's say $750, I expect to have a 1% share of the film's profit, if any. In the end it's all about stocks and shares, make no mistake this will hurt his public image in the long run.

Indie film making is expensive stuff. Isn't like with multiple people working on a film chipping in. Bear in mind, too, that 75k is still low-budget and that is going into an entertainment product, not a personal luxury and he may be wanting to make it more than just a review but to also spread himself out some more from his routine. I dunno, I think he deserves some suspension of belief than getting personal, he may make good use of that budget and make a decent movie. Too soon for the hate.

But this amount is pretty big. This is more than even Clerks and Paranormal activity (combined, even) and great movies have been made (such as The Gamers) on a much lower budget. An argument can be made that that this amount is based on the script, but really, what are they thinking of doing with a character whose sole purpose is to review old games?

The normal cut would be filmed with an ancient phone camera with a plastic cup for a microphone, to see this one you'd have to sell your vital organs.
