  • I already watched this movie.. All I can say is that it's very beautiful, it tackles the story of rich landlord on china with their concubines. I love the story, hatred of the concubines to each other, their competition to win the admiration and attention of the master of the house. But in the end, the main antagonist fail and this lead to her to insanity.

  • Orientalism alarm. Zhang Yimou made this film to get fame in the western hemisphere. In reality China was a revolutionary country with an emergent new culture. Orientalism is an imperialist ideology with collaborator in the east. Chinese movie maker have to study orientalism and critical whiteness plus postcolonial film studies. Also very useful is a close reading of Foucault's history of sexuality to understand western pornographic gaze at the eastern women.

  • Been trying to find it on DVD in Australia, any clues anyone?

  • luv this movie.....

  • this movie was strange.....

  • really haunting, really reaches out to all your senses. great movie!

  • I wish someone would put the whole movie up here or a link to watch the movie. I cant find it anywhere. I searched the web and couldnt find it, Netflix doesnt have it either. :-(

  • @Sexyred0682 Netflix definitely has it. And it's currently available. Look again.

  • I had seen this before when I was in highschool, I watched it when i couldn't sleep and found myself disturbed with what I've see. I had watched many Gong Li movies and this one is very different from its original book "wives and concubines'

  • I love gong li

  • i thort theis hade something to do with green lantern lol

  • This looks so good! I want to watch it. :)

  • Zhang Yimou masterpiece starring the gorgeous and talented Gong Li.

  • Gong li best

  • An amazing movie.

  • Glad to see the trailer for this film as it was one of the first I saw with Gong Li. You may be able to but a copy of this film from SBS. It is the story of a young headstrong woman whose father dies and she is forced by circumstance at least to marry a rich man with 3 wives. The raising of the red lantern signifies which of the wives is being favoured by the husband for night time visits. The favoured wife has power over the other wives and generally exploits it to her advantage. Great film!

  • Actually she becomes a concubine; she can't marry rich, she can only be a rich man's concubine because she isn't rich enough herself.

  • @TheNuharoo Yes, you are correct but I am not sure the difference between a wife and a concubine matters in this film. The real point is whether you are the favourite or not. Only the favourite has the real power. The exploitation of women occurred to both.

  • @PirateTravisJohnson1 Thats the name of the movie, wich is an old movie (1991). Im sorry they titled a comic with the same name.

  • @PirateTravisJohnson1

You stubled accross this video by accident. No matter, that happens all the time. but this is your lucky day because you've just discovered a great film. Seriously give it a shot.

  • Please someone upload this movie for me!!! I can't find it anywhere and I love this movie!!! ....It is not at Blockbuster...I asked for it and they looked at me as if I asked for a movie about brain surgery!!

  • @annahrwth242 You can probably borrow it from the public library if you live in a decent size city.

  • does anyone know where i could watch this movie in full?

  • @melnel612 At Blockbuster.

  • I THUMB DOWN

this trailer bring out all the goods in the movie. i truely wish i hadn't since this trailer first. alway awesome movie..left me in aws.

    awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

  • cant believe it was once like this

  • i didnt like the ending

  • @Gproducshizz Me too .. :'(( but this movie so awesome :))

  • Gong Li just has the correct mix - face + talent!!!!!

  • this is such an amazing movie. Talented actors and director

  • i saw this one myself YEARS AGO it was very good~DD

  • the fricking trailer spoils 80% of the movie

  • it's Zhang Yimou's best work

  • the end is unexpecting

  • Great movie !!!!

  • way to give away the story

  • Thi movie is so incredibly great!!! I've seen it like a milion times... everytime I learn more and more! Gong Li is the best... LOVE IT!!!

  • could somebody help me! movie websites say this film is 125 mins long, but i got it from torrents and it runs 5 hours +. could you explain me whats with this long version? it is surely that film, it says RTRL right in the beginning.

  • Gong Li is amazing

  • This movie gave me goosebumps, although we already have enough TV series about concubines in the palaces, which is even more complicated and worse. It's just... so realistic about how this still happens in a time when there are no longer emperors with dozens of wifes wishing to become empresses, in a normal wealthy family. Once you are involved in the game, you have to play it till the end, and you can't lose, or it will be you who are gotten rid of.

  • very, very good movie!

  • This movie pissed me off. Everything bad that happened to her was her own fault. If she had chosen that lifestyle she could have at least played along and just appeased the guy so she would have the lanterns and foot massages. But no, she had to complain like a little girl about everything and make it worse for herself.

  • @webbster5296

And when one of them wants to play the game (like the second wife), no one else except those who are no longer threats to her can avoid it or stay away from it. If they win, they win the husband, the chances to bear sons, and the positions; but if they lose, they might lose everything -- including life.

  • @webbster5296: She had a strong sense of pride which is why she kept fighting. I don't think it's childish, at least she wasn't a manipulative suck up and had a backbone. Anyways if she appeased the guy the other wife would have just sabotaged her in the end.

  • mine too warneka thanks

  • wtf kind of trailer is this, they might as well show the whole movie already, everything is in the trailer, totally spoiled.

  • SUCH A GOOD MOVIE!

  • Hmm idk.... this movie idk... lol

  • This movie is so good. China wanted it banned.

  • This trailer sucks, man. they showed all the major events and didn't even make them look that intense

  • Yimou was such an incredible film maker back then. now he basically sucks.

  • an allegorical film :D

  • This movie looks so amazing! I'm dying to see it! Anyone know where I can watch it?

  • this is one of my favorite movies, but u can buy it in the store and its also on netflix.

  • I Love this film I saw it ages ago...

  • Does this movie have anything really inappropriate in it?? What I mean to say, anything psychologically traumatizing that would make it unfit for family viewing?

  • That depends on your criteria

The story is rough, a girl who decides to marry a rich man, who has other 3 wifes, there are some really hard scenes about the problematic going on there, but nothing really explicit though, no explict sex or violence scenes, but its still somehow suggestive.

I'll tell you that the most crude scenes are in this trailer.

Anyways, I dont think this movie would fit in a family criteria, maybe age 16+, ill recommend you to watch it alone and judge it for yourself

  • Well, as long as it has nothing really explicit in it I think it's safe to watch. There have been many times in Asian movies with messed up violence and rape scenes--so I'm a little wary of them.

So I think I'll buy it. I love Gong Li so I know it'll be good. She's such a good actress!

    Thanks :)

  • @warneka Again. You have made no case on anything inappropriate.

  • Don't trust me blindly but I would say watch it. It could be a lot more rewarding than a skanky hollywood movie.

Yes there are some honest depictions of human nature (that can scare us and seem psychological) but by being such a beautiful it makes up and could be interesting for all ages.

I would've loved my parents if they showed me this kind of movies.

I hope you get a more precise reply. Good luck.

  • Well, my parents didn't let me watch anything that wasn't animated when I was little so I always had to sneak out of my room at night to watch the ones they told me not to... And I loved them. Dracula (with Gary Oldman) became my favorite film when I was 10. It touched me so deeply and literally made me cry at the end. Then I watched Lost and Delirious... I cried even harder!

  • @Amatrixy HAHAHAHAHAH psychologically tramautizing.... oh come on kids these days are so inappropriately mature and know LOADS of stuff that would take parents' image of their kids being angels and change that right around in a snap!

  • No, it's pretty tame. Awesome film.

  • @Amatrixy

I think it's just sort of bleak mostly. Nothing very complicit at all, its very subtle.

  • @Amatrixy The ending is not suitable for the young ones even though it is not explicit and I doubt they would find the film as a whole interesting. If we define "Family Viewing" as children below the age of 13, then I would say it is not appropriate for them to watch. You may find yourself trying to answer a number of embarrassing question. It is not that it is explicit but sometimes a mood or an idea can upset the little ones.

  • I had the opportunity to watch this movie during my college time. The saddest thing is the way how women were treated by those lords.

  • Gong Li is the actress; Gong is the family name.

Address friends and same-level coworkers/students by first name, superiors and elders by last name.

  • its one of those great films!

  • I saw a few minutes of this movie a few years ago, thinking I'd be heading for the next channel, but couldn't stop watching! It's a totally amazing piece of cinematic art.

  • theres this movie called "to live" and i think its by the same director or somethign and has some of the same actors

  • right, To live was directed by Zhang Yimou too, I watched it last week, but Raise the red lanterns is still one of my favourites.

  • Oh gosh I know this film.I watched it when I was little and I remember I was very impressed by that.

Can someone recommend to me more such great movies

  • google chinese fifth generation cinema

  • Gon Li could raise my red lantern anyday! yowza....

  • Haunting and amazing film. Zhang Yimou is a master film maker: Ju Dou, To Live aka Lifetimes, The Story of Qiu Ju, Happy Times, Shanghai Triad, Not One Less, Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower. Gong Li is simply gorgeous. Classy lady and ever so talented.

  • gong li is cute here with her little cute bangs.... ; )

  • i just love this movie and Gon Li,saw her in A soul haunted by painting to but i like this one more

  • I saw this movie at least 3 times...

  • oh my god. this movie is a reflection of my life in the house of my grandmother. All the women, trying to impress the husband(in my case all the women trying to impress the grandfather) manipulating and evil. Brilliant. They treat me just like that. The grandfather likes(or at least liked) me, so they stab. All my aunts. Stab.

  • Great movie! And it's weird but Gong Li is always beautiful, from her first role to now... She is not aging or sth like that ;))

  • Just saw this- wow- was incredible-

  • this movie is mindblowing

  • I could only watch this on a grainy DVD with crap sound and cliche'd badly translated subtitles. It's a shame, because even through all that this still proved to be an extraordinary film. One of my favourites :)

  • apparently there are two dvd versions of this, 2006 and 2007... the bad one was the 2006 one, and the better quality was 2007. Check out on amazon, thats where I saw the info on the dvd.

  • a realy sad movie.

  • Good movie. very haunting!

  • Best. Movie. Of. My. Life.

  • one of my fav movies too. It's a classic from director Zhang Yi Mou. Beautifully shot and haunting story.

  • this really is a great movie. it definitly has that tone of the Fifth Generation filmmaking. really great early film from zhang yimou.

  • never seen it, but i want to now!!!

gong li is a great actress

  • very good movie
