it's not the original version which came out by Bobby Helms on Decca years ago.. sadly.. another reason to stick to posting originals, but it's still enjoyable none the less, if I didn't have the 'real' version brainwashed inside my head from having heard it so many times.. lol, suppose it's better just for the variation, never heard this version before actually!
No, it's not the Decca from 1957 unfortunately, but from the Darlin' record sessions he did 10 years later in 1967. These recordings have been put out on many different budget labels through the years, including this one on Trip records. I'm glad you got to hear a different variation he did later in his career :-)
@Ne14Gr8Music: One more version Helms cut was in 1970 for the ill-fated Certron record label (that one came and went so fast nobody knows it actually existed).
The Little Darlin' version heard here is a staple of budget reissues even today (as the masters are now owned by King Records (yes, THAT King Records of James Brown legend) in Nashville .
Yes, definitely a classic. Brenda Lee did do a version of this too which is really good. Jingle Bells is on the flip side and I'll be posting it later this evening.
