@Murmisen it's just basic chords. 1-4-5 Progression; G-C-D back to G for the "verses" and C-D-G Then there is this one segment where it goes C-D-am-C-D-G. You can see/hear Joy play that in the movie with a capo at the 5th fret. hope that helps.
Saw the film last night on satalite....its about how shit life is and how fucked up it makes you. The girl in the pic, whose in the film looks a lot like my ex-nothing against the actress but I hope my ex rots-thats a good example of 'hapiness' too. If I live long enough, I'll probably end up as empty as Ben Gazzara's character....the song? Well, thats a theme I identify with.....How FUCKED UP.....
@McQueenX Here is some lyrics of my way of saying thanks to Michael Stipe for sounding way to happy on the recording. [lyrics] Why am I singing happy When I'm suppose to be sad I told Todd Solondz that The only friend that I had Was my dad (Really, that is how I got the job) I'm going to sing happy So screw you If you don't like I'm Michael Stipe There's is nothing you can do
if you repeat the g, c, and d chords (in that order)those are the basic verses. i'm sortof teaching myself the rest of the song from there. sorry it's not much help..
It's from the black comedy film, also called "Happiness" - Rain Phoenix also does a lovely acoustic version of this song in the film itself, which I would LOVE to get a proper recording of somewhere.
Yes, this version is quite nice but unfortunately so short; take a glance to my video and you will find this "acoustic version". Maybe it would be nice to hear the Eytan Mirsky version
@Trollfresser it's hilarious though. the character's even use comedic timing. it's easier to look at it as a comedy than a soap opera or serious drama. but I can see why you'd say that though, it is pretty much the most f*cked up movie I've ever seen.
I guess you could say that. But some things (for example the pedophile guy) were nothing for me to just say "haha! Oh that's rich" you know what I'm trying to say?
Some themes were too dark to just laugh at them - at least, for me they were.
@Trollfresser there were some serious bits that noone should laugh at, but then there were some scenes that shouldnt be laughed at but were funny. its a tough one!
@Trollfresser That particular character reminds me of the "grotesque" characters from southern gothic stories cause you despise him for the things he does throughout the movie yet you feel sorry for him at the same time because they go into how he's struggling within himself
Thanks so much, I've combed the internet for this. I can't even find a damn CD with it on, let alone an MP3. Would you happen to know where it can be obtained in some form..? :)
I suggest you to copy audio from my video. There you'll find two versions and you can choose the one you want. If you want a CD, would you be interested to buy one with only this single?
This is obviously taken off of the film soundtrack because the actual recording of Stipe's version of the song has an extended intro. But why don't you all check out the superior version by the guy who wrote the song, Eytan Mirsky. You can find it on itunes and on his cd, "Everyone's Having Fun Tonight!" It kicks Stipe's ass.

The choruses are basically C, D, G (2x) until you get to D, then Am, C, G.
Bridge= C, G, C, D

Rain Phoenix doesn't do the version in the film. The actress Jane Adams does.

I don't think you can call Happiness a black comedy.
Happiness is pure despair.
Trollfresser 2 years ago 31
@Trollfresser , actually you could call happiness a black comedy, if the black was motor oil, and the comedy was greek;)

@Trollfresser still black comedy since some of the things were kind of portrayed in a comical schadenfreude light.
