Well, lets see here. A) the staff and sword in the background, not to mention the one in the left guy's hand, all seem of Roman origin, B) the large circular shield as well as the long spear are of Greek origin, and C) LOOK AT THE DAMN ARMOR. Neither legionnaires nor hoplites wore full body armor.

The roman legionnaire are much like bees alone they pose no real threat but in numbers the can fucking kill. They implied tactics like the turtile shell shield defense were each man was responsible for the man next to and behind him that is why they were so effective and that is why they are in this picture.

If you dont think they arereally roman look at staff in background it is they symbol of rome slightly altered.

But in the later years of the roman empire they partly rellied on mercenaries. even tho they shouldn`t be called legionaries. The legionaries also drilled daily

It was one of the reasons why the Greek phalanx was so ineffective against the Romans.

You are incorrect.

Legionaries did not have plumed helmets and did not carry hoplons, Macedonians did.

This appears to be a historically inaccurate representation of roman soldiers in individual combat (also inaccurate).

This would have never happened in roman battle, as a commanding officer would have given the order of retreat to reduce losses if defeat seemed inevitable.

This tactic wouldn't allow for such thin numbers to be present in battle as depicted in this piece.

You are right however of these not being Romans for the helmets and armor are not of Roman designed and the shield and spear the one is holding are not of Roman design either.

The Roman army as we would imagine it didn't have chainmail, and then later, when the Roman empire started to decay, the armor and overall look of the legionaire drasticly changed.
