True, they are all great. Still, you have to focus on what Wetton did in the 70's, with King Crimson and UK in particular. His playing was powerful, groovy, melodic and his improvisation skills where unbelievable; something Lee and Squire would never know. I feel that they were more worried about getting a good tone, rather than how much soul and feeling went into their playing. His playing in Asia would have been awesome, but that's all thanks to carpal tunnel.
@GiI11 ....That's because Wetton intentionally did not want to play the bass like in his previous '70's bands. When he established ASIA, he said in an interview that he wanted to cut his Progressive Rock roots to a minimum, and not play as many instrumental solos as in his past bands.
@junipree Geddy Lee can play awesome bass fills, but when a comes to just being a member of the rhythm section Wetton can play much more complicated and imaginative bass lines while still keeping time, that and his improvisational skills are way better, look up elegy by his first band Mogul Thrash and tell me I'm wrong

Lay off the bong and deal with reality, he has greqat tone, but no where better than Squire or Lee, listen to Fragile, and Farewell to Kings for starters.
They're all good tones, don't you think you're overreacting slightly? Wetton's is far more aggressive then Squire/Lee. The description just says 'fantastic P-bass sound' why does it always have to be about which is best? I would change my decision on a weekly basis. Are you American by any chance?
Indeed, superb bass tone - however the bass he has used was always a 1961 Fender Precision Bass, pickups unmodified (standard split P) - apart from the trimmed pickguard, refinished to white (from natural) and an a Tone pot that was overdriven.
What can I say that has not uttered before...such tonal character breathes new life into the words 'punch' and 'growl'! Wetton is the final word in what a beast the Fender Precision can be!
But please tell me, as I've been humming it all day, what is the track 0.21 - 0.41?
No wonder why John Wetton's bass tone is one of the most sought after, the man made could level city blocks with it.

I love Geddy, Squire & Wetton. IMO, Wetton has the best rock bass tone and I love the man's vocals.

I like all three bassists, Wetton, Squire, Lee. Who cares about which one is "better?" Just enjoy playing and listening to their music!

Jesus, they're all good. Maybe music shouldn't be about a competititon?

No offense, but Wetton destroys Lee, along with Squire as well.

Hell, they're all fantastic.
Thing is, I haven't seen any fantastic bass playing on behalf of Wetton in the Asia era.

@OwDatHart2112 none taken, but seriously, have you heard YYZ, or limelight.
wettons good, but lee's bass lines are way-harder to play.

A big crimson fan, respect Wetton, but Lee could teach him a thing or three!

Does anyone know what gigs these were recorded from? Presumably the 1979 tour?

Sorry to hear you have only one album in your collection, you really should try to listen to more music.

There's no better bass tone than the RED album.

I won't argue against squire as he's on equal footing to wetton. However wetton is a much more creative bassist than lee.

Sorry Geddy & Squire...John Wetton got the best rock bass tone. The tone from his 61 P is simply breathtaking.

Thanks for using one of my photos...the "red head back" shot was taken at the Cape Cod Coliseum with Crimson in ' 74.
The entire collection of photos can be seen on the DGM/Crimson site.
As for JW's tone...amazing!

Unbelieavable bass tone - John's custom modified Fender with PJ pickups and no pickguard became the basis for almost all modern Fender type basses.
