The engines in the tractors are Gardner 4LK engines. Ref the engine removed from the XK120, it is possible that this car/engine may be the one Gardners converted in the 1960's for hugh gardner, a director of the company at the time. As far as I know this was the only such conversion, what a shame the car and the engine have not survived together.
wow what a video to find i work at the yard of ewan purvis who is the son of james purvis and we recently had to scrap a landrover built by james with a gardener engine in it it was an amazing machine such a tight fit apparently he bought it brand new took the standard engine out and converted it to run a gardener engine that had previously been in a jag xk120 its awesome to now see the man who built such an amazing machine and another of his amazing conversions
Its a small world , I know Ewan well, I used to go to the family house with my older brother when I was still at school always on on a wednesday evening to see how Mr Purvis was getting on with whatever project he was doing at the time, I remember seeing the dexta at various stages. I remember when he did the landrover and had to do away with the 4 wheel drive for the engine to fit if my memory serves me right. I have a 1965 ERF LK44 lorry that Mr Purvis brought over from Scotland in the 1970's.
Theres a 135 back end in that 35 as you can see the fast/slow response lever for the hudraulics and the lift levers have the square type knobs on them. Also the hand brake lever on top of the gearbox is visible as well as the square type diff lock pedal. Its a very very nice piece of work and a credit to the person who done it.
I thought i had done well to put a six cylinder perkins engine into a t.v.o Ferguson but this Gardner engine conversion is far better than the one i done.
Sorry I'm not sure where the wheels came from, I videoed this in the early 1990's and unfortunately the gentleman who did the tractor died several years ago so I've no way of really finding out.
Nothing that I know of, he just enjoyed fitting different engines to tractors as a challange, it was his hobby. This tractor was really only a show piece!
Thanks for sharing the video! Would be nice to know where are these 2 jewels with Gardner engines! Hope someone who takes care of them!!

Different!
There is a video of a Fordson E27N with a similar engine in it.
Gardner engines had an excellent reputation too.

Beautiful workmanship, these men really took pride in what they did, may they be remembered fondly.
