Jaguar would be better if they offered a manual transmission in the XK series of cars aswell as the XF. They used to with the xk120 and i believe the e-type was offered in stick aswell!!
whatever the e type was the first jaguar. the xk 120 and 140 were the fastest cars in the world when they came out. they produced two bugatti veyrons. (120 and 140 was the top speed of the cars.) go watch the victory by design about jaguar.
@TheDealinDave xj220 was fastest car in the world in 1988 and in 1989 ferrari took it away with f40 and in the 60s they was the mk 2 which was used in the grate train robbery the fastest salon in the world so fast they escaped the police for 25 years
Have to say I love Jags however you want to pronounce the name, however have to agree on reliability. Had a 86 Daimler/Vanden Plas, Great engineering but crap electrics. Problem was the BL days, not enough cash and too many bits bought in from other manufactures and scabbed on. Post 94 cars, beginning with the X300 make great daily drivers though mileage is better on V8's. Own a V12 and you'll need a few shares in BP...

Having worked for Jag, I can say that anything before the Ford takeover was Junk, nothing came in with more then 65K miles. The 4.0 V8 Always overheated and warped the heads. It's a much better company now.

The most recent XK, I believe, was the car the revitalized the Jaguar image. I can't even tell you how many friends/relatives complained about their old Jaguars (two XJ's, an S Type 4.0 and an old XK8) being unreliable, shoddy pieces of engineering, and this is when they were bought NEW. It may kind of (not even close to a carbon copy Roy) look like a '95 Supra, but is that such a bad thing? And with the Supercharged V8, it is a true contender in the Grand Tourer market, especially the rag top.
@carguy0528 I also have a friend who had an old XK. Same complaints. I drove the new XK Convertible. Very nice, however it needs a desperate update. The design is old. With all the new parts bin pieces from the XF and XJ it should be simple for Ian Callum.

Alex, JF, I really enjoy your segments on FLD and I have to say.....the timer thing has to go. The E - type, my personal favorite car of all time.
After my first Pe-tit Lemans and road atlanta this year... I swore to never buy a jaguar. Because, well, they performed horribly. Getting lapped by cars not even in the same class as them. Then i saw it as Giving up on a peace of.. heritage but now with the soon to be resurrection of the e - type, i cant help but to believe there is hope for a jaguar racing division. Btw the f - type looks stunning.

It was the lack of focus which people were complaining about. the best advice i can give is try to be a little clearer and concise with your message and alil' less douchy-ness from Alex and a lil' less ubergeek from J.F.
I agree that who ever thinks this show is too long probably has ADHD. I want as much information on the topics as you can give, and so does everyone else........without ADHD.
The company has had a history of poor decision making skills. Look at the XJ220, XJR15 fiasco. Also, the RSR GT2 Jag is not factory supported so don't allow their poor performance to reflect on the brand. Given that, I really don't think Jaguar is a "racing brand" as JF states. They raced, sure, but it wasn't a pedigree like Ferrari, Porsche or Maserati. If you want to talk about Jaguar in motorsport take a look at Bob Tullius' Group 44 Jags from the 70s and 80s.

John Surtees tested an early 60s E-type and an MGB around a tight race course. Both were European specs (more powerful than American) and the MGB was faster. Now the I agree that the E-type is gorgeous, but a race car it was not, especially on a tight road course.. The E-type used Lucas electrics - also known as the Prince of Darkness.
My father had the misfortune of owning a 1988 XJ6. Brilliantly cool car to be seen in. Wonderfully comfortable ride. Hopelessly useless "computer" electronics, and was in and out of the service shop more times than I care to remember. The electronic odometer stopped working somewhere around 130k miles though before he finally gave it away to charity. Whoever got that car was both very lucky and very unfortunate at the same time. It was a driving paradox. Still loved it though ^_^

@Mknives That would be because they were both British manufacturers and when they started looking similar, they were owned by the same company. Aston Martin has always been the performance oriented cars and Jaguar based more on luxury.

When you talk about motorsport DO NOT use NASCAR as a foil! Anywhere outside of the USA who cares about a series that does not matter anywhere else in the world. The formula has been exported to other countries and it has failed hugely!!! It does not develop drivers that venture onto the world stage instead it is where also rans end there careers chasing dollars! Why did Marcos Ambrose head to NASCAR, not because he is a talented driver and he is that! He left to chase the money. Turn left!

Alex... NEVER compare the XK and Aston to the likeness of the Supra. The Europeans NEVER copied the Japs... it was the other way around. NEVER compare the styling of the Supra to the XK and Aston EVER.

JF please kill that stupid timer, i used to love the in dept view and discussion road testament used to offer. Alex, JF, I really enjoy your segments on FLD and I have to say.....the timer thing has to go. You're episodes feel really rushed now and it feels like there's so much you guys skip over because of a stupid timer. If people are complaining about the length of the episodes they're clearly not interested enough in what you have to say or the subject material and shouldn't be watching in the first place.

I disagree with jaguar being a racing brand. Plus if you're going to be mad at any car manufacturer for getting out of racing it should be Alfa Romeo. There was a company who was all about racing.

The XK is the best looking out of Jags whole line up and has been for some time! It looks almost nothing like the Supra, and preforms way way better! This puts me in a rough position...
The E - type, my personal favorite car of all time.
After my first Pe-tit Lemans and road atlanta this year... I swore to never buy a jaguar. Because, well, they performed horribly. Getting lapped by cars not even in the same class as them. Then i saw it as Giving up on a peace of.. heritage but now with the soon to be resurrection of the e - type, i cant help but to believe there is hope for a jaguar racing division. Btw the f - type looks stunning.

It's funny everyone has their panties in a wad about the timer. That's not the problem... The problem is you put two people, Alex and J.F who both have A.D.D and things can turn into an infinite loop.
It was the lack of focus which people were complaining about. the best advice i can give is try to be a little clearer and concise with your message and alil' less douchy-ness from Alex and a lil' less ubergeek from J.F.

The company has had a history of poor decision making skills. Look at the XJ220, XJR15 fiasco. Also, the RSR GT2 Jag is not factory supported so don't allow their poor performance to reflect on the brand. Given that, I really don't think Jaguar is a "racing brand" as JF states. They raced, sure, but it wasn't a pedigree like Ferrari, Porsche or Maserati. If you want to talk about Jaguar in motorsport take a look at Bob Tullius' Group 44 Jags from the 70s and 80s.

The XF coupe - and possibly the xj coupe ( if made )
will secure Jaguar for the next 5 years - even without the F type
And the XF coupe is coming
They need to tweak the curent engine to keep up with the new F10 M5 - and they need to keep an eye on Audi and Cadillac.
I am positive that by 2012 - Jaguar will be the car to have - without a doubt.

John Surtees tested an early 60s E-type and an MGB around a tight race course. Both were European specs (more powerful than American) and the MGB was faster. Now the I agree that the E-type is gorgeous, but a race car it was not, especially on a tight road course.. The E-type used Lucas electrics - also known as the Prince of Darkness.

My father had the misfortune of owning a 1988 XJ6. Brilliantly cool car to be seen in. Wonderfully comfortable ride. Hopelessly useless "computer" electronics, and was in and out of the service shop more times than I care to remember. The electronic odometer stopped working somewhere around 130k miles though before he finally gave it away to charity. Whoever got that car was both very lucky and very unfortunate at the same time. It was a driving paradox. Still loved it though ^_^
