Your criticism is generally valid, but I think a little misplaced in this situation.

@obspot Regardless of it is or not (Michael Cera or other), the truth of the matter is indie or mainstream, the Hollywood movie industry has a gross lacking of roles for Asians period. The ones left are often stereotyped and negative (i.e., the nerd, martial arts expert, crazy vengeful bad guy, comic relief). I'm happy that Ellen Wong was able gain a role, on a successful film, however you'd be hard pressed to see an Asian actress in a role where Mary Elizabeth stands.

However, this film is pretty much a direct adaptation of a graphic novel by Bryan Lee O'Malley, and the casting of the film seems to follow the ethnicity of the characters of the comic fairly accurately. Yes, the main characters, Scott and Ramona, are of European descent in the comic.

At least there isn't whitewashing like there was in The Last Airbender, or in the film "21".

So are you criticizing the original characters in the comics, as devised by O'Malley? In this particular instance, Hollywood is not particularly blameworthy, at least vis a vis the ethnicity of the actors and the characters they're meant to be portraying.
