the purpose of the monolith is vaugely explained in the book 3001 our buddy arthur made 2069 and 3001 i have read both and they arnt that great neither have very strong ties to eachother 2069 is skippable imo

Check out Full Metal Jacket, the scene where Cowboy has just been shot. The monolith is center screen in the back ground. And while the monolith may represent many things. Joker evolves/wants to kill just like the pre-human/ape did. Got to love Stanley Kubric.
