Love the shot of Butter Lane in Bridgehampton (0:32 to 0:37), which captures the feeling of a train on the move and the dirt roads and horse and buggies of the era..
@filmcruiser88 I take it everyday and I see it geting worse and worse. They keep raising fares and cutting service. I hope someone finds it in themselves to save it. They should be doing aqll kinds of excursions and faqmily trips out east. Frieght traffic declines every year. It just kind of exists but isn't moving forward. No one seems to have a vision for its future.
Sadly, nowadays more ppl use Hampton Shitney than the LIRR, because of the train schedules. They probably ran more trains back then out east than now! The LIRR could easily put HJ out of business if it wanted to, with more frequent trains. HJ costs twice as much as LIRR and is slower. Yet ppl take it because they are often left with no choice due to the infrequent LIRR trains.
@PinePowerLI That will be changing soon. The LIRR just got several billion for capital improvements to electrify the line all the way out. But as the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. Along with the extra trains will come extra crime, extra people, and extra congestion. Only a matter of time
It's just my opinion. But I think LIRR has the most expensive fares in the country. It might have been cheap years ago. But not today. And I ride trains everywhere accross the country.
@filmcruiser88 Well they sold off the bus service. There's very little first class. The freight service is gone to NY and Atlantic. If it's not electric they want to abandon it. If the people in Jamica, NY had their way the whole east end would be abandoned. They just want to be a big subway with all MU"S running around.
@JonniDDR Yes, even Mile Post 117 is there from Brooklyn. Ten more to Penn Station. Penn Station. The mainline went to Brooklyn. Now with Amtrak in Penn Station we were to have thru trains to Albany or Washington. Well I'm still waiting! A one seat ride thru NY wouldn't that be great! Just think of it.Trains could go just about anywhere, Long Island to Boston, Chicago, Florida...but nothing!
That would be a trip to see. They say that those steam engines could plow out to Montauk at 200 plus miles an hour. That is what the old timers say. My family is from the Riverhead, Hampton area, Sag Harbour. Some of them still live out there. I look at the old movies and photos and look for my family in them. I love those train stations that are 160 years old. Preserve them. Don't distroy them like they did in Huntington. .
