when were acid tests invented? do we actually have physical data from 1765? is it documented? how reliable were the tests? what about the years BEFORE 1765, was the ocean basic or neutral in the previous years? this is interesting BUT the ecosystem of the whole earth is a great deal more complicated than a simple acid test!
ok, let me explain some things.. Calcium carbonate is dissolved in seawater today too.. it is not "going to start dissolving" at a particular pH.. it will dissolve somewhat faster, that is all.. however, building of carbonate shells is dependent on a hydrogen-calcium pump,which works better at a lower pH. photosynhesis is increased with higher co2 concentrations, and this is an alkalizing process. furthermore, there is also a solid buffer involved, like lime-stones and other rocks.
