  • 1:09 look at subtitles

  • GIVE ME THAT RED EPIC.....NOW !!!!!!!

  • Snickers is good!

  • Firstly, LOVE THE FILM!!! I am a young budding Director like you guys and was wondering if you could give me some tips on how to make a movie like yours, whatever the genre. Also, what model was your camera(s), as I would love to get a good one myself.Very last question... How do you edit it too

  • press 6!!!

  • you are awesome thanks for your tutorials !

  • @filmriot Is the 7d comparable to the 5d for filming?

  • @w01tman94 close, best way to see is to watch filmriot's episode: t2i vs 5D

the t2i and the 7D have about the same video quality so the comparison should be about the same.

  • PRESS 4!!! for special needs ryan!!

  • @OfficialRogueFilms 9 is better :P

  • THAT'S IT! From tomorrow on I start preparing to make my own short film, I've been sitting on my ass for way too long... I have it written and everything...Thanks for the inspiration, dudes! Now just gotta find a way to make my 60d look like THAT : (

  • @DonRMB The 60d is a good camera. You should be able to get some very good video from it. Good luck!

  • You mentioned that you where going to do a cinematography section... but we're still waiting... :(

    - GNMfilms

  • this short film was amazing to say the lest,,,im a inspiring director any advice?

  • @MrTahail tip 1: check out the BTS of both tell and losses for ryan's tips

2: just keep doing it, you'll get better with practice.

note: you mean aspiring (not inspiring) inspiring would mean that you've inspired others (i guess you could be but I doubt that's what you meant to say) aspiring would mean to be ambitious about something (in this case filmmaking, of course)

  • greetings from Ecuador, south america ... atte. David

  • I don't know about you guys but this doesn't seem like a 'Behind the scenes' to me at all. Anyway, loved Losses! Great fucking job, guys!

  • Well Done

    Amazing Short Film

  • I like the domain.com marketing strategy

  • 200 bucks and you got a free RED EPIC! thats way it's easy to do the film, if you doesn't have de RED, this was cost you a lot o money

  • @carecara2 actually he pointed out a while ago that when re-compressed for the internet the RED EPIC and the 5D look extremely similar.

NOTE: he already has the 5D

  • With the guy behind the camera fellow at 1:37...is he holding a time code logger in his hands?

  • i got that shirt

  • Can someone name the song they used for the montage at 1:17?

  • Can someone share the best way to script a short film like this? One that has few lines for the actors but lots of action. Do you write all the action into the script or is it best to do something else? I want to do something like this but don't really know what to give the actors.

  • @AuggieDogProduction

1 - story outline (backstory and what happens in what order)

2 - action scenes with location/conversations with location

3 - detail the words in the conversation and what happens in the action scenes

4 - re-write it until it sounds good

5 - get everything together and start making some epic movie...ness.

  • @dinelsonus 3 people were on set and wanted that snickers that he gave josh.

  • Snickers. Why wait!

  • Hey, love you guys! CHECK OUT MGNFILMS!

  • You guys are great! COME CHECK OUT MGNFILMS!

  • Love it!!!... Definitely outstanding... kinda like to see Josh faces as next Jason Bourne..

  • josh really cant act

  • @Isle0fRed I love how you think you can be a critic when you're really not. Just like every other conceited on YouTube.

  • @spairpartsdealer It doesn't take a critic to notice that someone can act. Have an open mind next time

  • @Isle0fRed You can have an opinion, but that doesn't instantly give you the right to bash on people's abilities. I honestly though he did a really good job.

  • @spairpartsdealer Well, like you said, it's HIS OPINION. He has the right to share as everyone else here. If you have the right to say that he did a really good job, then Isle0fRed has the right to say otherwise.

  • would you guys be able to check out a fellow youtube trying to put his work out there

    /watch?v=NH4CB1UQKu8

    thank you

  • @MGNFilms it wasnt very great for all summer...

  • @imask8r

If you have nothing good to say, its prob best to just keep it to yourself, but thnx anyway.

  • @MGNFilms im not trying to be rude my man, i was jus saying. but i guess your right.

  • @imask8r

We just worked really hard and literally filmed it with nothing but a handycam and some friends that don't happen to be very great actors. Just wanted you to know that. And srry for being a little rude but your comment might have accidentally came off the wrong way.

    Thanks

  • Still looks amateur... sorry but fail.

  • @Mandeologul Get lost troll.

  • @Uzianium I love film riot, but with that camera, the film should be awsome, but it's just average...

  • @Mandeologul Ok then, good point. Sorry for hatin.

  • what microphone were you using in the movie?

  • yo Ryan is there a way tht i can b on the show? no jking i jus luv film riot u guys are awsum

  • LOVE YOU FILM RIOT!..... check out MGNFilms for a great action trailer, for "The Truth"

  • does anyone know the specs of their editing rig(s)? I am interested in making a short film but I can not edit anything because all of my equipment was flooded out in the Hbg, PA floods of 2011... any help?

  • Come check out MGNFilms for the trailer of our up coming action movie, "The Truth"! LOVE THE CHANNEL!

  • This is really cool. I always want to do films like this but as a writer I have this incessant need to have my characters talk, Kevin Smith style, ad nauseum.

  • God the school screws my time for making movies!

  • @maxstudiosalkesero go to school and actually be smart

  • Hey, love the video, come check out MGNFilms to watch the trailer for our up and coming movie, "The Truth". Please, comment, rate and subscribe!

  • Loved the short, and I love how you talk about budget and equipment. You can do a lot with very little.

  • Hey filmriot. You should make a video on making filming equipment made from things from home.

  • rYAN YOU ARE MY HERO

  • nice!

  • Hey, great work! Come check out MGNFilms for the trailer of a great action movie we've been working on all summer, called, "The Truth".

  • Where did you get that t-shirt?

  • @bluffatpk its on their website

  • I really loved everything about this, other then the camera seemed a little shaky. Was this intentional? Did you think of using more steadicam kind of things?

  • Tip number two is my favorite. Thanks for broadcasting that Ryan. I try to keep the same thing in mind on my projects, whether I'm working with other cinema students like myself or friends from home, giving others respect is key to coming out with a good project and not screwing yourself over.

  • Someone give this man a feature to do!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Favorite'd!

  • what DOES JOSH SAY AT 1:49 ? XXXXXXXX PUNCH YOU.

  • @TheAcSstudio "and then i"

  • I'm a huge FilmRiot fan but 'Losses' was a bit pointless. Beautiful exercise but not much in it for us. The sharpness of the images amplified the shakiness. it was hard to watch. And if you're going to such trouble to film something, would it not be nice to come up with a great story too? Y'all so original in your commercials and yet, when you come to the big pieces, they all just seen to involve Josh running around and shooting at stuff. It's a worrying trend....

  • Very good. Very good indeed.

  • Hey, great video! Come check out MGNFilms for the trailer of a great action movie we've been working on all summer!

  • Hey, great video! Come check out MGNFilms for the trailer of a great action movie we've been working on all summer!

  • After "Losses" I really want to see "Tell"!

  • Hey, great video! Come check out MGNFilms for the trailer of a great action movie we've been working on all summer!

  • OK, I may have been wrong. Josh does need a mic...maybe just set half as high as Ryan's....I flip flop....I hate me too.

  • SNICKAHS SO GOOD

  • Alittle bit too much shaking.....stabilization...

  • Extremely impressive short and behind the scenes. Each of your episodes is inpsiring to a low budget filmmaker and after discoverying filmriot, I invested in a T2i and am hoping to shoot many more videos in the coming months. The effects you talk about are explained thoroughly and inspire ideas for complete videos based on single shots/events.

Thank you, for being you (imagine cheesy grin and thumbs up)

  • what about tell?

  • Hey guys, love the show... come check out our channel for a great trailer to an action movie we've been making all summer. Commet, like and subscribe, I hope you guys will be impressed. Come check us out and give us some constructive critiscim.

  • Keep it up Ryan --- Sent From filmriot's AppRats (Facebook App)!

  • Anyone else noticed that even the Making Of is shot awesomely? :D

  • big respect for working with such a short amount of time - some colleagues and myself shot a short movie as well a half year ago and we were under massive time pressure! (it was for university, somehow we never start early enough...) Filming and also especially editing under stress sucks big time, and the final product clearly showed that we had not enough time - I don't see any of that in "Losses" - great job!

  • You guys are my heroes- seriously. Partly because of you guys, I am pursuing film and video like there's no tomorrow! I was suppose to be in Public Relations btw! So one day, when I saw one of your films I said, "awww, screw the corporate world. Im doing film!"

Thanks for being such an inspiration, Ryan and team. Please, keep shooting! :)

    Nic

  • Keep doing what you do guys, your videos and hard work really help when I'm stuck on how to do certain techniques or styles in film - people may complain but you are teaching this to all of us for free, no complaints here :)

  • do you have another short film out? if so can you send the link please

  • When ryan says "low budget" this is so true, Yes he has a 55k camera, but this truely is not that much for a film, Go look on imdb at movies and see how much they spent on it, Its also low budget because he used friends family, and a small amount of lighting, for how much ryan spent on this EPIC video it would cost hollywood a lot more on the same thing, And i would say this is Just as good.

  • Ryan just a simple question or any of you out there to answer "HOW LONG IS THE UPLOAD TIME OF YOUR VIDS?" days or somethin cause it takes too long for me 4 hours for 480p how if 720p? Thanks :)

  • this behind the scenes video should have also had "overview" in the title. i was disappointed.

  • Pretty picture, but the audio was weak. step up that audio game ryan!

  • So many budget arguments...

Do yourselves a favor and google Pure Pwnage. It's a pre-Youtube webshow that rose to millions of regular viewers and eventually got a TV show, and it started with nothing but a good idea and a crappy borrowed DV camera from a university library. Good tools help, but they are not necessary to tell a great story. That's all down to your script and how much time you're willing to commit. Time is the most valuable commodity, moreso than even a RED epic.

  • I love film riot but half of the fucking show is just filler.

  • @17thSHIT I like the filler

  • Did you do any tracking? And if so (i presume the shooting-scenes we're tracked) how did it work with the amount of motion?

Did you use mocha to track, and if so, what would you choose to track when adding eg. smoke coming from the gun?

I have a tough intro for a musicvideo and there will be a shootout scene. Any tips and tricks?

Would appreciate it a lot if you answered!

Ps. Love the work you guys are putting out for us! Amazing.

  • I'm drunk, but it's still awesome!!! :D

  • thank you

  • can we get a torrent please? haha i for one would love to see this in its completely original quality without the weight of the proccesing of youtube on its beautiful shoulders.

  • just b/c you shot on a RED does not mean you need $50k+... you can rent them for like $1,200 a day... So even if Ryan had to shell out 2k -3k for two days of shooting, it would be low budget. Secondly, the video looks good primarily because of the direction, lighting, and acting. I bet you if Ryan was shooting w/ a T2i, it would look very awesome. Building some DIY kinoflos is pretty economical as well, so you don't need to shell out thousands for lights.

  • @gder01 Very well said sir. Digital high-five! It's what we always try to push, "Just get out there and do it!" You can do stuff with little money.

  • @filmriot except for getting After Effects.. but still i agree totally

  • @gder01 I couldn't agree more, it doesn't look much different than what people have shot on Canon 5D's barely looks like RED at all!

  • @MrWelschvideo Looks Way Better Than Canon 5D To Me

  • @MrWelschvideo did you put it original

  • ZOMGoodness peeps. u wanna see too much camera shake watch bourne identiy lol

  • yah when i was filming one of my short films i forgot my Microphone and we only had a day to shoot so..... the audio was bad

  • I freaking love the short. Well done you 'orrible shower.

  • Ha you advertized Snickers without acting like it. I love snickers

  • 6:10 Skip ad..

  • Will u be making Losses available for purchase on Blu-Ray? maybe bundle it with Tell when its done???

  • Ryan, you and your team are pretty much the most inspirational team we've ever seen. When we start our youtube channel, we will make sure to mention you in the video description whenever possible. thanks for the videos and keep them coming!

  • where did you get that guerrilla shirt ryan?

  • even the dislike bar is bigger than justin biebers penis.

  • youtube.com/watch?v=DWSPkobt5SU

  • Personally I hate it when somebody says,"We made this with a very small budget!" Especially in this case, you used a $55,000 camera and had quite a bit of lights, plus the $200 you said you spent on props and what not. Even if you just used the Canon 5D, you'd still be looking at at least $5,000 overall. Therefore, it is not a low budget for us underprivileged filmmakers. Love the show though!

  • @Waveriders14 but as he said, the lights and props etc are things they accumulated over time. so yeah if you go out an buy a load of stuff in one go its gonna be more expensive, but in the long term your films will look better and cost less.

  • @mattachu26 I understand that but just use a camera as an example. You can't just accumulate a camera. To get a decent camera you have to put out at least $1,000. Plus you're going to have to buy lenses things of that nature. A nice DSLR lens alone is more than the $200 that he said they used for the entire film.

  • @Waveriders14 Wrong, you can get vintage primes for as low as 15 bucks each. And truly you can have all of the equipment and still make crappy films. The only way to make good films is practice.

  • @TheReelFilmGeek I have been practicing but most of the time you won't be taken seriously unless you have quality videos. And by quality I mean good effects, storyline, etc. AND good picture.

  • @Waveriders14 The people who wont take it serious are not important then because your story and sound will always be more important than your visuals.

  • @TheReelFilmGeek I guess that's true. But I like to focus more on special FX, so to me visuals is really important. I guess that's why I'm more concerned with picture quality.

  • @Waveriders14 the entry to ANY film making will always be a barrier, $5k is nothing, do u expect to get noticed using a Flip camera?

  • @Xcomer0 No but when I'm just a college student do you think I'm able to afford a $5k camera? I think not...

  • @Waveriders14 I can see where you are getting at, but saying someone is working on a low budget is not based on the everyday man. In the grand scheme of things (the world of film making) it is a very low number to spend only $200 dollars on something on any level of film making. Sure some can't afford this equipment, but again we aren't the measuring sticks of low budget. So he had a red epic, he was smart enough to find a way to borrow it for free.

  • @Xcomer0 You can make films now with Handycams etc, for example, the film 'Colin' which was made for £45 and got to Cannes Film Festival !!!

  • @Waveriders14 ryan has been a film maker for years and has got some contact just go around with other film makers and you may get good contacts

  • @Waveriders14 Though if you buy a 5D or any other camera, you can reuse it as many times as you want, so once you have bought it, you don't need to buy it again for your other films

  • @Swaza13 But it's just getting the money to buy it, that's what I'm trying to get at. If you're in college like me, do you think you'd be able to come up with that kind of money?

  • @Waveriders14 Well I'm only 15 and I saved up and bought a 550D (T2i)

  • @Swaza13 Okay but at 15, you don't have to pay for college, food, clothes, car, gas, etc.

  • @Waveriders14 Damn right - I have LITERALLY NO BUDGET. I also have like a $200 camera... so I'm hoping to get a better one cos that would be AWESOME.

  • @DuckHouseProductions Thank you! That's exactly what I'm saying. I have a $150 HD camera and that's it. No special lights or anything like that. I've been trying to win some video contests so I can get some more money to upgrade and stuff, but it's hard to win when you have to go up against people who already have all the equipment.

  • @Waveriders14 I think you are confusing small budget with a no budget/ extreme low budget. . . Don't get me wrong I see what you're saying, it's just that truthfully (like he said) you don't need great gear, just creativity and effort.

  • @FutureFishProduction Well I have no budget. I'm a college student with no spare money. I also understand what you're saying about the creativity, but have you stumbled across a 240p video lately on YouTube? They have so many dislikes just because of the lacking quality. Even most of the comments are just of the video quality. Most people now days aren't going to like those videos, even if it is a great video.

  • @Waveriders14 True, I am in the same boat :( College takes and rapes your money haha. I suppose the only thing I can even say to that is that depending on your family, friends, or school you might be able to make some connections and borrow one. Other than that I can definitely feel the situation.

  • @FutureFishProduction Yeah my family isn't poor but we're not rich. I'm lucky I'm going to college. I do have a camera that I bought like a year ago. It's really good for $150 but I really want to somehow get the Canon T3i. Don't know how but eventually I'll get it. lol

  • @Waveriders14 Same here. I recently bought a T2i, I saved up quite a bit and then sold a bunch of stuff haha. They are amazing for something that does so well with video and stills. granted its like 6-700 $ but So worth it. Just keep scouting Craigslist and eBay. Good luck on your endeavors my friend!

  • @FutureFishProduction Thanks and same to you!!

  • @Waveriders14 when they say lo budget they mean using only the equipment they did not pay for ie: the red the lights and probably most of the guns

  • @AAfilmproductions I know that but most of us other filmmakers aren't just going to have one of our friends loan us a Red Epic. Most of the time we're going to have to buy all of our own equipment.

  • @Waveriders14 what im getting at is not about the red epic, you use all of the gear that is available at the time and for them it was the epic for someone else it might be the cannon hv40 the idea is still the same

  • @AAfilmproductions I WISH someone would loan me a Canon hv40. My camera isn't even that good.

  • @Waveriders14 they don't own the RED they just got it given to them for free for a couple of weeks. But I know what you mean.

  • @TreehouseMovieStudio I know it's not theirs but in order for us to achieve the same thing we'd have to buy it because I'm sure that hardly anyone else has friends that would just let us borrow their $55k camera. lol
