I'm new to the 40k game, and I chose black templars cuz I prefer melee and I myself like templars. Is it a good choice for a beginner? Or shud I use other chapters? Plz Reply thx
@awsomedrummer100 It doesnt matter really, all the rules are exactly the same. The larger edition has somewhat better examples and in colour. The hardback is chunkier due to having parts on modelling, collecting, painting etc.
A 6 person group of my friends and I started playing 40k about a year ago. I had some previous miniature gaming experience and so did 1 or 2 of my friends so we kind of tried to figure out the game ourselves. We did a pretty good job aside from never doing real missions or deployment we always just have huge apocalypse battles of about 4000 points + on each side slamming into eachother. Thanks for making this series.
there's something about a verbal explaination that sticks to the memory cicuits. My son and I are steadily working our way through the infantry basics, and these walkthroughs are worth a thousand readings, and re-readings of the manual. Its very clearly and concisely written, but after a while the text becomes a blur. Your talks really cut through the haze of misremembered rules.
@PeteAmachree I appreciate the across the atlantic applause. =)
My goal from the get go has been to break the rules down because on the whole most table top strategy games are pretty complicated. This issue is so great that I feel like most poeple can't pick up 40K without knowing someone else who plays. I'm really glad this has helped.
at the begining of the game if i have ten wolf guards in a squad can i declare that im splitting them up as two 5 man squads then take one out n put it in as a wolf guard pact leader with my blood claws?
Yes, the rules change a bit from edition to edition. 5th edition is the current edition. If you buy the current starter set (Assault on Black Reach) with Orks and Space Marines it will contain 5th edition rules. If you bought the no longer available Battle for Macragge, or however its spelt (with Space Marines and Tyranids) you have the out of date 4th edition rules.
this is a great video I would recomend giving more time on ur tid bits kinda couldn't finish reading them. All in all I would tell other people to watch for lessons on general play.
i have 5 wolf guard but im not sure if im aloud the weapons.. i have 1 with twin lightning claws, 1 with power axe, 1 with thunder hammer and storm shield, 1 with power sword and bolter and the last one with lightning claw and power fist. can anyone tell me if thats ok thanks.
I am not posiive on the new edition rules for combat squads, but in the older one, you had to half the unit betwen the two combat squads. I believe that they each had to be a minimum of 5 members (so it had to be at least a 10 man unit to break it into combat squads).
Space Marines only come in max squads of 10 (as far at least as tactical marines go). These squads can start out as 1 10 man squad or 2 five man squad.
i have resonably steady hands.. right up untill im painting my models :p .. i cant paint detail coz my hands start shaking like hell... i hav to paint the detail in bad quality and then fix it up with the original color afterwards lol
i suggest if any 1 has a games workshop store near them they go there at mine they do open days for begginers can a space marine tacktikal squad have flamethrower plasma gun and missile launcher or are you limited to what you use?
squads and units have many options available to them as far as weapons selections. each army has a book called a Codex that lists all of the unit types and points costs for them (new ones are often added after the books come out). It also lists all of the options that are available to each type of unit and the points cost for the new weapons/equipment.
We actually talk about just this issue in our Round Table Discussion (Episode 1). The table top game can be a really amazing experience and there are ways that you can make the game easier to play, such as how your terrain is set up. Getting started in this hobby, if you don't know someone who plays and can teach you, is a tough first step. It's why we did these tutorials.

i really like warhammer 40k and have a pretty large necron army but still have no idea how to play because i never got the rule book and now i'm thinking about getting warhammer fantasy
my mistake was when i was a beginner and i got my space marines and rulebook i jus put the rulebook aside and started putting together and painting my army
soon enough my army was done and the rulebook was still left untouched because i wanted to just get straight to the action
and it ended up that my army was left to gather dust while i had to learn the rules
id recommend getting in with the rules before trying to run before you can walk
doremicom, is the pocket rulebook in the Assault on Black Reach the same as a regulation rulebook just without as much history about the factions and paiting and army collecting advice etc. cause splitting the price with my ork friend and he already has a rulebook is ALOT cheaper than spending 60$, but can u play just the same with the pocketbook version, or is the big version required
For a long time I was the same. I did not purchase my first Warhammer rule book until I was 24 (Warhammer 3rd edition). I totally feel your pain. I wish this game was a little easier to buy for younger players.
Doesnt the Assault on Black Reach (or something like that) have the rulebooks you need? btw I havent started playing yet I hope to start soon.I love orks are they any good ?
The ork thing is no suprise to me, idk about you but i play the Dawn of War games and the orks always have a high unit and vehicle population limit.....not to mention that most of the ork squads can have up to around 10-15 or so
Relic, the developer of Dawn of War did a really good job creating a sense of how armies are composed, and the feel of the game. I give them huge props.
Im with you.. im a vet.. iv been playing 4 years now and i just started geting 4th ed when thay switched to 5th ed... as darth said.. it becomes second hand.. its alota rolling and thinking.. dont be affrade to go to your book for ancers... we all start some were..
is there an upside to terrain , like if ur guys r on a slope or hill side the get a advantage or if ur attack someone on the difficult terrain would u get a disadvantage
I'm hope you don't give up on 40K. It's best to have as many players as possible.
What army do you play? I agree that GW has unbalanced the various codexes, but the SM codex isn't as broken as some of the other codexes I've read. I play BT, which does not grant the upgraded SM weapons like the Space Wolves codex.
Open a dialogue with me, I'd like to read your impressions and maybe find a way for whatever army you play to be more competitive with the SM codex.
space marines ARE unbalanced, they've gone from "jack of all trades masters of none" as they were in second edition to "masters of all trade" as they've been since 3rd edition onward.
But that is not my primary issue. I understand that Space marines account for about 50% of all GW model and book sales, and that GW is business first are foremost.
But my faction, dark eldar, has been waiting a decade for a new codex, at the same time dozens of sub-faction chapter codexes have been released for SMs.
I don't have a problem with SM's themselves. It's more the way GW big-ups the marines to the exclusion of all other races. That and the fact that they represent about 50% of all 40k players.
GW has said that they will finally get around to a new DE dex in the next year. That and some new models.
But if GW is going to market various races and factions they should really offer more support for them. Either that or just drop them if they aren't selling.
Well, I can definitely understand your codex envy especially being a DE player. Way back in 3rd edition DE were my backup army (like most people since you got DE models in the starter set). I think GW is hesitant to remove support for DE, afraid they'll piss off people who have purchased DE models.
But there are other races that consistently trump SMs, Chaos is a great example. It is a shame that some games are won before they're played based on Power gaming army lists.
It's great to see new people enjoying this hobby. Feel free to ask questions, just make sure to check out all the tutorial vids before pm'ing me. Also, if you have a question about a particular tutorial vid, post it there, others might have the same quesiton.
in 3rd edt. (4th?) there was a weird pattern for deployment, like each army taking turns setting up HS, E, T, FA, and then HQ or something to that effect, is that rule still in effect, and if so, could you explain it more in depth?
the 8 hour deployment has been removed in 5th edition. Person who rolls highest determines who goes first, the person who goes first deploys everything (based on the deployment type), Then the second player goes and deploys everything (that the player doesn't want to leave in reserves).
Not sure what you mean by the charge rule (maybe a +1 attack), the assault phase is covered in a series 2 tutorial (this space marine vs necron game is series 1).
Don't let seize the initiative get you stressed. Seized the initiative is an option that the player who deploys (and hence will go) second can roll a six-sided die at the conclusion of deployment, but before the 1st player moves his/her pieces. If the second player rolls a 6, then the order is flipped, and the player who deployed second goes first.
There is no penalty. Because the likelihood of seizing the initiative is small, often when people are set to go second, they may not deploy as many forces, or deploy them in such a way that they can't benefit going first. In that case, simply going second is preferred.
because I still am not 100% sure what you're question is in reference to, and page 15 is about the shooting phase... I'm going to guess that I was firing a rapid fire weapon at 12" which allows me to fire twice per model.
When your video says the whole bit about combat squads
is it true that space marines can break up their squads as a squad comes in from reserves? Meaning that they dont have to declare each combat squad breakdown with deployment?
Page 51 in the space marine codex specifies that the 10 man tactical squad may be broken down into 5 man combat squad when the squad deploys (not at the beginning of the game). The one exception to this rule is a squad that arrives via drop pod, and the combat squads can be created as the unit disembarks from the drop pod.
Dude I would like to start playing this game, but the rules are so complex, and after researching various websites it seems like the Imperial guard always win because of some bassilik gun. But if I do start the Tyranids seem like my kind of army, since there is no personal attachment to my units since they are limitless. LOL.
Warhammer 40K is an exception based rule system. You start with basic rules from the rulebook, but EVERY codex (army) has models that break the rules. It's one of the biggest problems with creating a tutorial video. Because if I go over the basics, there will always be a unit in a particular army for which those rules do not apply.
I have a feeling necrons will get one more choice to replace the C'Tan that will eventually be Apocalypse only. Don't quote me on that, I just think it make sense.
Thanks for the compliment. After filming this first series, I can see why it's not often attempted. 1) takes a long time to film one or two rounds and 2) it's nerve racking trying to make sure that you word the rules correctly.
But if this helps even a handful of people pick up the game, it's a win.
very helpful

You can move any unit according to how far it can as it says in the codex. normal infantry units move 6 inches

i hav a question u said u need 2 roll 2d6 dice per enemy in the new rule book it say role 1 d6 dice wich 1 is it?
carnifexiscool 3 years ago
what is this in reference to?
doremicom 3 years ago
in 1 of your vids u said u must roll 2 dice per enemy but on page15 of the rule book it says roll 1 dice per enemy
carnifexiscool 3 years ago
because I still am not 100% sure what you're question is in reference to, and page 15 is about the shooting phase... I'm going to guess that I was firing a rapid fire weapon at 12" which allows me to fire twice per model.

When your video says the whole bit about combat squads
is it true that space marines can break up their squads as a squad comes in from reserves? Meaning that they dont have to declare each combat squad breakdown with deployment?
smacky101 3 years ago
Page 51 in the space marine codex specifies that the 10 man tactical squad may be broken down into 5 man combat squad when the squad deploys (not at the beginning of the game). The one exception to this rule is a squad that arrives via drop pod, and the combat squads can be created as the unit disembarks from the drop pod.

Dude I would like to start playing this game, but the rules are so complex, and after researching various websites it seems like the Imperial guard always win because of some bassilik gun. But if I do start the Tyranids seem like my kind of army, since there is no personal attachment to my units since they are limitless. LOL.

is it different rules for each race of warhammer figures???
then i mean like, some rules for necrons, and some other rules for tyranids? or do they have same rules?
WarHammy 3 years ago
Warhammer 40K is an exception based rule system. You start with basic rules from the rulebook, but EVERY codex (army) has models that break the rules. It's one of the biggest problems with creating a tutorial video. Because if I go over the basics, there will always be a unit in a particular army for which those rules do not apply.

yep

do u think there will be more choice for necrons soon
noobfilmdirector 3 years ago
I have a feeling necrons will get one more choice to replace the C'Tan that will eventually be Apocalypse only. Don't quote me on that, I just think it make sense.

OOOO Some warhammer eh? I'm subscribing! Though i would like to perhaps see more painted units. But that's not important.

you win 100internets
ntfh 3 years ago
ntfh, what will I do with all those internets?
Thanks for the compliment. After filming this first series, I can see why it's not often attempted. 1) takes a long time to film one or two rounds and 2) it's nerve racking trying to make sure that you word the rules correctly.
But if this helps even a handful of people pick up the game, it's a win.
