The part when she becoes a daughter of the air is removed because of Russia's Government during the time. There was no religon, so the story could not talk about the mermaid trying to gain an immortal soul.

@HHHPPP8 Disney version of what?! Please don't insinuate that Disney ever created their version of "The Little Mermaid". The best the Disney can do is to take classics and make a commercial/musical out of it . With some selling stuff like kisses(kids version of sex), spooky yet entertaining villains and happy ending. So happy that it tastes like a pound of sugar with caffeine free tea... Well, no tea at all, just sugar.

I wonder what Andersen would say about it. Probably he'll be speechless.

@yurikuk I think Andersen would be less negative about Disney's version of his fairytale then most of comments here insist. Why does people always think black or white? Way can't both version, or better: all versions of the same tale exist together? This is closer to Andersen's tale, yes indeed, but also not for 100%... I knew the original story long before i saw the movie with Ariel, and I like both versions. I think Andersen would appreciated Disney's attempt to honour his fairytale.

@Spinnradler I admit that I don't like post 90s Disney, in my opinion is that it deserves all the critics. But since all post soviet era animation is quite poor then why should Disney be any different.

That said I think you are right (guess its partially your intend) that Andersen needs a bit of adaption, softening(?), before presenting his tales to the kids.

Me, I as much as I dislike it, prefer to show the Disney version to my 3 years old girl. So sadly she thinks that Ariel is redheaded;)

It is interesting to see this styilised version that has strong Kay Nielsen art deco design since Kay Nielsen had made Little Mermaid inspirationel sketches after designing Night on Bald Mountain for Fantasia! The ending song says no one so brave and kind should be destroyed and so suggests the mermaid has an afterlife.

Russian animation makes me think about true human nature. Probably, over this does lie the mankind answers. "Little Mermaid" may tell about sacrifice to an ideal. Nevertheless, only on natural characterization (and strongly essential through music like this one) the childhood may learn the veritable nature from human spirit. That is a genuine version!

this cartoon is absolutely divine and shuld be viewed as a master peace, every moment is very artistic and creative, specially the song she sings that later repeats it self. i used to watch this cartoon as akid for hundrets of time. and even thow most of the russion cartoons are preety borring uncreativ and stupid this one and olobyanni soldatick (the tin soldier) are just perefect.

You've missed the most interesting. ;) Try to search "ГЕРАКЛ У АДМЕТА " & all animations dedicated to greek mythology by the same author, "Caliph-Stork ","Sphinx's Riddle | Загадка Сфинкса" , series about Winnie Pooh, "A girl and a dolphin ", "Plasticine Crow ", "Contact" & ohter sci-fi animations inspired by R. Bradbury, not mentioning "Hedgehog in the fog" & many, many others. You've missed the essentials )

Tastes differ, you know. I like some animations, which i sent to you for some reasons. They created in such a manner that they do remind about real ART, but they are comprehensible for children. eg. animations, dedicated to Egiptian & Greek mythology have some allusions in technique with authentical Greek mosaics, art & some french painters . The same could be said about Egyptian animation, etc. plus, they contain serious philosophical plot. Sorry for my English.

I 'm very well acquianted with animations by Miyazaki. He is an exceptional talent. But you stated that most of the Russian animations are stupid&bad. I can't agree with you on that point. There're lots of animations, probably made in a bizzare manner, but they're not stupid. eg. "Snow Queen" , "plasticine crow", etc You need to expand your knowledge about Russian art of animation & get rid of stalin's ghost.

i think this presents more depth than the disney version, and offers a more realistic approach to love. makes me wonder.. how do people who grow up with these kind of cartoons differ morally from those who were raised on disney?

Actually, in theoriginal Anderson story, the mermaid was given a dagger and if she carved out the princes heart she could return to the sea.

the story is original from Hans Christian Andersen and the russian version is the only one which was loyal to the autor´s ending.

@dharmaista Not quite. The anime version ended tragically (in fact, probably more so than Andersen's original). A made for TV version from 1975 also did, as well as "Faerie Tale Theatre's" version, and at least one more shorter anime version.

When she died she becomes sea foam, and unites with the other sea foam fayries. It is a beautiful image, symbolizing another sphere of life after death. The russian version does reference to it.
