The part when she becoes a daughter of the air is removed because of Russia's Government during the time. There was no religon, so the story could not talk about the mermaid trying to gain an immortal soul.
@HHHPPP8 Disney version of what?! Please don't insinuate that Disney ever created their version of "The Little Mermaid". The best the Disney can do is to take classics and make a commercial/musical out of it . With some selling stuff like kisses(kids version of sex), spooky yet entertaining villains and happy ending. So happy that it tastes like a pound of sugar with caffeine free tea... Well, no tea at all, just sugar.
I wonder what Andersen would say about it. Probably he'll be speechless.
@yurikuk Yes, Disney sugarcoats everything. And happy endings are unrealistic and overrated. I agree with you. All they can do is a good musical, and even then they steal from folklore, fairy tales, and legends.
@yurikuk I think Andersen would be less negative about Disney's version of his fairytale then most of comments here insist. Why does people always think black or white? Way can't both version, or better: all versions of the same tale exist together? This is closer to Andersen's tale, yes indeed, but also not for 100%... I knew the original story long before i saw the movie with Ariel, and I like both versions. I think Andersen would appreciated Disney's attempt to honour his fairytale.
@Spinnradler I admit that I don't like post 90s Disney, in my opinion is that it deserves all the critics. But since all post soviet era animation is quite poor then why should Disney be any different.
That said I think you are right (guess its partially your intend) that Andersen needs a bit of adaption, softening(?), before presenting his tales to the kids.
Me, I as much as I dislike it, prefer to show the Disney version to my 3 years old girl. So sadly she thinks that Ariel is redheaded;)

She could have been a little less selfless and thought about her sisters' sacrifice. They can't get their palace and their jewelry back, and she STILL didn't change the Prince's misconceptions. That's not love, that's masochism.
It is interesting to see this styilised version that has strong Kay Nielsen art deco design since Kay Nielsen had made Little Mermaid inspirationel sketches after designing Night on Bald Mountain for Fantasia! The ending song says no one so brave and kind should be destroyed and so suggests the mermaid has an afterlife.
I always crie when I hear the song in the end... I think it's the most beautiful song ever! The world must hear it! I'm shore it will become really famous...
Russian animation makes me think about true human nature. Probably, over this does lie the mankind answers. "Little Mermaid" may tell about sacrifice to an ideal. Nevertheless, only on natural characterization (and strongly essential through music like this one) the childhood may learn the veritable nature from human spirit. That is a genuine version!
@kissmyseater I agree this is the most unrealistic tale ever. I mean if you're on a boat, with a friend, and your friend just disappear, it means she's probably drown, right ? And he's just well nevermind lol. So sick, and idiot.
@Rainbreath101 What you call "reality" is not but the one what common people want to believe (the easier-shallow one, of course). If you are seeking for that sort of, it's better you search into commercial advertisement instead fairy tales. Even less into russian animation, which is too spiritual and no "realistic" to you, sir. Bon voyage!
this cartoon is absolutely divine and shuld be viewed as a master peace, every moment is very artistic and creative, specially the song she sings that later repeats it self. i used to watch this cartoon as akid for hundrets of time. and even thow most of the russion cartoons are preety borring uncreativ and stupid this one and olobyanni soldatick (the tin soldier) are just perefect.
To my mind, you're mistaken about Russian Cartoons.
You've missed the most interesting. ;) Try to search "ГЕРАКЛ У АДМЕТА " & all animations dedicated to greek mythology by the same author, "Caliph-Stork ","Sphinx's Riddle | Загадка Сфинкса" , series about Winnie Pooh, "A girl and a dolphin ", "Plasticine Crow ", "Contact" & ohter sci-fi animations inspired by R. Bradbury, not mentioning "Hedgehog in the fog" & many, many others. You've missed the essentials )
thank you for sharing those cartooms with me, i liked the "A girl and a dolphin"( i never saw it before),Caliph-Stork but all the rest of them are for my opinion just ok but not more than that, well Winnie Pooh afcurse is great)) Hedgehog in the fog is also preety good but still non of them are good as rusalochka or the tin soldier )) by the way you forgot to mantion bremenskie muzikanti wich is just wonderful))
i think you shuld check some of Hayao Miyazaki films i shore youl love them, and yhee i said that the most of the russion cartoons are bad, like you know all the stalinism stuff and when they animate stuff as if its a film(to close to reality) and thers alot of them!!!))
Tastes differ, you know. I like some animations, which i sent to you for some reasons. They created in such a manner that they do remind about real ART, but they are comprehensible for children. eg. animations, dedicated to Egiptian & Greek mythology have some allusions in technique with authentical Greek mosaics, art & some french painters . The same could be said about Egyptian animation, etc. plus, they contain serious philosophical plot. Sorry for my English.
I 'm very well acquianted with animations by Miyazaki. He is an exceptional talent. But you stated that most of the Russian animations are stupid&bad. I can't agree with you on that point. There're lots of animations, probably made in a bizzare manner, but they're not stupid. eg. "Snow Queen" , "plasticine crow", etc You need to expand your knowledge about Russian art of animation & get rid of stalin's ghost.
well actually i am russion)))) i think i saw almost all of the russion cartoons specialy the famous ones))
and afcurse if you like russion animations its your taste) i respect that.. by the way i like "snow queen". the cartoons that your giving for ecsemple are good)
And in USSR, every studio, every artist has his own style - quality is often poorer than their western counterparts', but artistic vision and the process itself - everyone is searching, experimenting with new techniques, with new images, instead of focusing on the one template that works for the most hsnce brings the most money.
Having said that, lets now compare American and Russian animation of the period. Yes, american storytelling is much more ptimistic and has more cute jokes and singing animals, but Disney has the monopoly of disign - all cartoons look more or less the same, big eyes, overall nauseating (sometimes) cuteness ect.
back in 60s-70s in Soviet Russia anal censors had themselves their own private party. Whoever you were - writer, animator, any kind of artist - before you got to realize your vision you had to pass 10^n ideological equivalents of an extremely brutal colonostomy, and even then if you did, your final creation was probably cut beyound recognition.
@Kindzadzaa And she did here also, sir. The song (The mermaid's song) does show that deed (the siren sang as "daughter of air"). The wonder of russian animation does consist on its clean musicality. That's why it differs from the "common art". The russian art always has been deeply religious in that way. For that reason, this version really did capture what Andersen wanted to tell. Thanks for uploading this to the owner.
I'm sad it didn't end as a comedy but this movie is definitely beautiful. I would still like to watch the Russian 1972 one though for more details you can say. Tell me if you find a English subtitled one! Thanks for you hard work!

wrong. she wasn't supposed to carve it out. she was just supposed to plunge the dagger into the prince and once his blood splashed on her feet, it would become a tail again.

@dharmaista Not quite. The anime version ended tragically (in fact, probably more so than Andersen's original). A made for TV version from 1975 also did, as well as "Faerie Tale Theatre's" version, and at least one more shorter anime version.
@disneyfan81 What I meant to say is not only about the tragic ending, the fact she doesn´t marry the prince, but about the symbolisms that Hans Christian Andersen brought into the story. When she died she becomes sea foam, and unites with the other sea foam fayries. It is a beautiful image, symbolizing another sphere of life after death. The russian version does reference to it.
There is no true love save in suffering, and in this world we have to choose either love, which is suffering, or happiness. Man is the more man - that is, the more divine - the greater his capacity for suffering, or rather, for anguish.
this is a true love story which hasn't got no obstacles or selfishness but true its so sad-but this is how all real love story ends even in realty don't they???????
i have watched three versions (excluding the disney one that in the end she gets her way and marries the prince . k ) that she turnes into sea foam , i rekon that someone should make a version that she ends up killing the prince and the princess , and she turnes back into a mermaid , just to make the ending differnt to the oriinal version n disney version . k
