I think it was John Virgo who once said "For The People watching in Black and White, The Blue Ball is the one next to the Yellow Ball" Greatest Line Ever
@Anonomousxxx I don't know you are probably right but at a match I went to a year or two ago, Dennis Taylor said Virgo said it.You might be right though
@DLPBurke Actually in the 1980's Snooker Was Far bigger than Football and Football wasn't even the second biggest sport, Darts was. There was too many riots in Soccer back then and nobody wanted to watch it or go to soccer matches
@alexnzx Nonsense. Snooker in front of Football? Stop having a laugh. Football is a world sport and always has been, hundreds of teams and countries. To compare it to Snooker is laughable.
The audiences have always been higher for Football and football has thousands of fans more.
I don't see how you can say Ronnie O'Sullivan couldn't handle a tactical game he's a fantastic safety player, and also probably the most naturally talented player since Alex Higgins so how he can be blamed for snookers downfall I have no idea. As for Selby I agree he may be agressive and I can't stand him as a personality but he's a great player to watch. I'd rather see play like that than the likes of fucking Peter Ebdon.
wish i was alive to see the golden age for my self. but you can thank no one but ronnie o sullivan for the downfall of english snooker. Talk to me if you need and explanation
ur an idiot, how can you blame people like ronnie o sullivan? its the people that run the game that have destroyed it, not the players. so get your facts right you fool!
If you had eyes you would see that people have become far too aggressive, hence the likes of Selby and o sullivan can win, if either of them faced a tactical game they couldnt handle it you dick, you just like people who kiss the crowds ass
I you say O'Sullivan(the tactical mastergenius Reardon taught him for heavens sake) and Selby can't play tactical games, you are the blind one my friend.
Selby is the master at winning tactical frames, didn't you see him play at the Crucible last year? And how is O'Sullivan not capable of playing safety, he doesn't even need patience to play it...
Selby only ever wins when people give him games, look at when he played Lee he made a highest break of like 40, and Selby still didnt win convincingly. He just kept scraping through final frame deciders
In that final he equalled the highest break in the last frame... And didn't he win those final frame deciders every time when other players couldn't succeed in doing that?
As any pro says final frames can go either way and theres alot of luck involved, had Stephen hendry not left a red over the pocket in the earlier rounds giving him the frame he wouldnt have even been in the final. Its alot easier to make high breaks when you know youve won the match that means nothing
I don't agree his play doesn't have anything to do with winning those final frames if he does it time after time. Equalling the high break shows he's focused to me.
If you would have understood my comment you would see I meant to say that doesn't matter because they are playing today. I'm going to stop commenting now because there's no getting through to you.
when snooker was king! love those 70s and 80s. great characters and difficult tables. todays snooker is a bit of a yawn with easier tables (cloths/pockets) and dull players. still, we have Ronnie...
was an hour long programme about Alex Higgins on the beeb, was posted here month or so ago, please post again if anyone has it.Includes all the others take on Higgins plus all the clips of his highs and lows.

Brilliant and a lovely surprise to see Eric Morecambe who later did a great snooker spoof sketch with Steve Davis in their 1981 Xmas Show.

That is when Snooker was great...very popular, great characters.
And now, you have got to say that the players are boring. I'm probably obsessed with Snooker but comparing it to the 1980s, its boring.
MrCueSport 4 years ago
Yeh,great. I agree with Seanjose, except for the bit about easier pockets nowadays which is wrong(they're tighter, I believe).
It was the characters who made the difference, and the fact the game was new to telly.
Now it's mainstream; mass-produced. Then it was home-grown. These guys came out of dark corners, mis-fits, wide-boys and old geezers.
Darts has always been a pub game so I would argue it has retained it's characters. Snooker went from back-alley to highstreet and lost something.
