I believe this is the first & ONLY footage I've ever had the privelidge to see of the old F-100 Super-Sabre as the Thunderbird(s) of that Era. Being a child of the 60s, I grew up during the Vietnam Era when the F-4 Phantom was the Thunderbird of the day. Had the privelidge of visiting the Museum the 1st time around 78'. Most of the Airframes video'd here were housed indoors by
WOW!a flash from the past..we moved to wright-patt when i was 6 yrs old..my dad was 1st sgt. 17th bomb wing..that musem was @ the end of main st. in fairborn..my hang out for years i remember every plane..i know the new place is nice but i love the one from the 1960's..shalom
i grew up litterally right across the street from the museum i spent many a snow day when in the 70s crawling all over many of these planes...the Strawberry Bitch was put inside and you could enter the cockpit and exit the tail..its amazingly small..i remember meeting Nixon when he open the musuem that replaced this one...i was 7...
I remember as a kid going to the Air Force Museum, they were building the new one, the planes were sitting outside in this gravel lot, it was wintertime. They had a Space ship rocket stage engine laying on it's side that was recovered from the ocean from a space launch. Can anyone tell me where the old museum was? perhaps at the same site? Perhaps they just built a new entrance and lobby maybe? I love the good ole days!
Fantastic, thanks for sharing. I haven't visited yet but I hope to someday. This past summer I visited the Navy Air Museum in Pensacola and the Smithsonian Annex at Dulles. I can't get enough of this stuff.
@GhostofCicero This is crazy for me. I live 15 minutes up the highway from the base. I'm 23 now and grew up going to the base. Seeing it from this long ago and seeing some of the planes, the strawberry bitch specifically is really cool.
My dad was the Dorsal turrret gunner on the "strawberry Bitch". Last year one of the docents said kids ask what "bitch" means and she said she tells them it's short for "Boys, I'm Taking Charge Here". She says that satisfies most of them.
@badflamenco When i was 10 or so I got to go inside of it on a private tour. My grandpa knew someone who worked at the base. I LOVE that place and I love history. Especially WW2 history. Salute to your dad...he did a brave thing!
I noticed that the X or Y B-52 was shown. It must have been brought there for a limited time because it no longer exists. Am I correct on this? Great video!
i just got back from there 7 hours ago, it was awesome look at the size difference and look at how some are outside pretty cool i saw strawberr bitch even touched the prop on her haha i always touch em takes me back eh wish i couldve flow some of them haha!
great video a wonderfull peice of history thanks for posting it...I love to look at all the memorials out side and within the hangers what a wonderful place to go to celebrate those who sacrificed so much for our liberty
Interesting to see an Atlas ICBM and an F-106 in the collection at this early date. Nice to spot that P-59 airplane, which I never saw somehow. Thanks for this over the shoulder.

Holy Cow! The XB-52 is there! Where is it now? Are they hiding it somewhere on base? Why don't they display it!!??
Milstar73 1 year ago
@Milstar73 It's not anywhere, anymore. They chopped the poor thing up for scrap in the early 60's.
