Nice going Harper, and Cavanaugh- How brilliant to keep your cavalry reserves, the linchpin of any gains to be made in the entire operation, back too far from the front to move in quickly.....What IS it about WWI commanders?!
Great tactics used with early tanks, especially with the fiasco of tanks at the Somme, but a broken bridge from extreme weight along with other set backs helped buy the Germans some time. Georg von der Marwitz remarkably turned the tide of the battle and regained lost territory. Truley a remakerable battle when it comes to technological achievemnt and tactics.
@hatemf23 they're probably just regular Arty but employed as anti-tank threats, much as flak 88s where used as anti tanks during ww2, and they did say that the tanks took multiple hits before being put out of action...
@H3N50N From what I know of it, that's pretty much what it was. The Germans realized that regular artillery, fired directly at the tanks, was enough to knock them out of action - and that's what they did. I think there was some success, as well, in using spotters with direct communication to batteries to "walk in" fire on the slow-moving tanks.
And even fast-moving modern tanks are vulnerable to infantry if soldiers can get on top of it.
Contrary to hollywood movies you see here that the might of the German army was in planning, training and command and control. While the Brittish still suck at especially command and control and planning.
For sale: French rifles, never fired and only dropped once! How were the Hun able to invade France so easily? They marched in backwards and said they were leaving!
@mad4669 Wow! You must be a visitor from some other alternate universe! History in this universe is totally different from yours. How did you get here?
In facts, in WW1, the French Canadian were very much better than the English Canadian !!! This info come from the book "Les Québecois dans la première guerre mondiale" Part 1 and 2. Also the % of the Canadian French/French Population vs the % of the English !!! Sorry I don't have the right number but you'll get the idea !!!
@fredrunlikehell Your facts are crap. 70% of the men who enlisted in the CEF where actually British-born immigrants, and the Minister of Militia in June 1917 told the House of Commons that only 5% of enlistees were French-Canadian. I'm not saying there weren't legitimate reasons for the disparity, but your claim that French Canadians performed better is ridiculous - there was never a French unit larger than a battalion. Shove your jingoism up your ass. And your "book" doesn't seem to exist.
Seems like most battles I hear about where the Canadians are fighting with the british, The Canadians always want to charge and fight while the british stay behind and leave the causualties mostly to the canadian companys
Byng bungled the operation imo

There may actually be some validity to the last statement. I wouldn't put it pass the British.

it's a danish machine gun first made in early 1900's that they sold to the germans during ww1
oh and it's called Madsen, not Bren or Type 98
artifexnex 2 years ago 7
That Bren is probably a Danish-made Madsen Automatic Rifle.
