@crusheroftheist wow - thanks for letting me know that. This same guy sent me VICIOUS offlist emails then pretends to be a nice guy to the people at SPAH and the rest of the harmonica community. I've saved the messages - have the proof. I really can't stand two-faced meanness - saw through him a long time ago. Now to know he doesn't even cut these combs he's hawking? Amazing. I'll be sure to let the people I know who buy harp parts in on the facts. Thanks for the heads-up!
Hi Jason Iam after a bit of advice, I have just made my first comb, and its quite good even if I say so myself lol. what do you use to seal /varnish them, any tips would be much appreciated . regards John
@mattrsmart then why not delete your admittedly 'rude' comment? It wasn't ONLY rude, unprofessional and disparaging, it was pure stupidity. Have you no idea that those harps quickly sold out beCAUSE they were made by an artist such as Jason Ricci with people who know how he plays dying to get their hands on a harp customized by him? You don't have a hope of ever getting to his level yet you come here to insult him? Pah. Another one thinking he's a big man behind the computer.
my dad was awesome when he was alive, i still got his larry adler chromatic 16, worth a bit i reckon easy 40 years old, i play guitar and must try and get into the harp one day, sounds cool
@xThatRussianGuyx people tend to call the 10 hole diatonic a 'harp', short for mouth-harp. It's a mouth organ basically (it's called that in Britain). The chromatic harmonica (with a slide/button and more reeds) is not called a harp as often. Most often 'blues harp' is referencing the kind Jason plays (and showed in this vid).
I just picked up a F-64C while in Tokyo for $1400 ... I feel like the police should be out looking for me for robbery or something! But one day, I have to get a custom!
hey those harps are AWSOME think you can do a youtube videos on how to make or mod harmonicas.. make them louder and perhaps bending the the reeds... embossing would be cool . any how awsome vid cool harps awsome playing and hope to see some diy harp mod vids thanks
Very nice custom work! I`m curious about the materials you`ve used. Did you completely remodeled the comb, or is it some kind of casting compound you put on the original comb? Also the tooths of the comb seem to be pretty long, on my harps they`re behind the reed plate. What`s the purpose of that? And why are the covers so oddly warped?
There are a few people who can play pretty nice on them, but mostly all the big akward feeling of a chromatic without its clarity and none of the freedom of diatonic.
Thanks for another brilliant vid. The track is awesome (and so is 'Sonja')- I'll have to get the new CD. And the harps- I want them. They look a bit like toys, or a bit like something you could eat- and you can see a huge amount of love and skill went into making them- and you can just tell they are superb instruments. Then you have to listen a few times because the tune just blew your head off! I give this 6 stars out of 5.
There is a system for blind players called braille. Put little bumps on your harp if ya want, lol. You can get Turbo Harps if you need a system to tell what end is up. If it is too dark to look at the cover try blowing softly before taking the mic, lol. Or Again you can put little bumps on one end to remedy that too.
Hey Jason, you are an excellent harp player! just ondering can you point me in the right direction of were i can get a nice custom comb for my harps especially my Hohner Blues harps. i just find the wholes are a little bit too small. special 20's are perfect but i prefer wood combs. Jason thank you my friend keep up the awesome work.
my dad did some of the pools in most o the colorado hot springs but the name mystic says it all it is very beutiful and micheal ginsburg owns it he is the one that did most of the artwork for the greatful dead he wanted us to live there but we moved on to oregon so sad.:(
The song is called "The Blow Zone Layer" and it is by Jason Ricci and New Blood from the record "Rocket Number Nine" you can purchase it at barns and Noble, or borders or CD baby, amazon or itunes places like that....Thanks so much!
These harps are quite beautiful Jason. You're very artistic, it seems, in more than just playing music! I don't see how you can stand to part with them! I don't think I'd ever want to part with even one! I assume that they are all set up for overbending?
Those are awesome harp designs. I love seeing you whenever you come to B.B.s in St. Louis. I wish you came to Carbondale, IL, we love you here. I finally was brave enough to post my harp playing video on youtube tonight. Thanks for all your youtube tutorials. T.J.
AND THEN I WAS THINKING WITH 1 OF THESE HARPS O MY LINES AND tIGERS & bEARS ALL W ATEING 2 C MY THING SPORT KING IMAGINE ME U C BUT HOW MUCH? AN ESKIMO SHARES IGLOO CONCERT@ "THE ICE HALL" INVITE 1 & ALL WE LUV THE SNOW WE NEED MO JO
No None taken. The duck bills broke while crimping on this M.B. and I was able to get the Blues harps out mostly ok but with a couple of knicks normally that would never happen on the EASY part (Cover Plates). The only challenging thing on coverplates is raising the draw side for reed clearence which if you look close you can see has really been done well on these and the others in the other vid.
I frigging HATE opening the lower covers. Too much of a mouthful. BUT, I am have a die made
that is cool as all hell. Makes more reed space without bending the cover. P.S. There is nothing easy about opening S.P.20 covers and making them look factory good.
A mouse ear prewar? in Bb? That rules! I really like how you used fire red nail polish on that one. It really adds to the heart motiff, looks like a harp that comes with a box of Valentine's candy. I'm totally gonna rip that sometime!
Hey Dave...Actually thats a Ruby Slipper Acrylic Paint...took like 5 coats the harp just kept getting bigger with each layer too...The nail Polish went on last...Too bad you cant try any of these before they sell! They play the best of any I've ever built period!
Seriously. I mean, please answer this: how can I learn from you? I'm dying to know how to customize harps like you. And play better. I don't think you have any workshops coming up?
Thanks Johnny... I took some of them down, cause it's a never ending learning process, I'm gonna be replacing them with some better videos. There are still quite a few customizing videos there right now.
