many times women's names are erased, we don't have a place in history, how many women do you know in art history? Just since 19th century their names started to be considered, but even nowadays there are people who think that men's names are better... I don't understand.
Yeah, well, this has nothing to do with that. It could just as well be "David Lynch's 'Andalusian Dog'" that he guy is re-cutting. It's about Lynch is famous today, and the giants of surrealism that stood before him are not -- that's the reason this pointless video was titled this way.
Dude this is the work of Maya Deren an amazing experimental director way before David Lynch learned how to work the camera. I think she deserves credit for being the inspiration for many men and women
I think the confusion is that David Lynch very much admires and is influenced by Maya Deren. Lynch references Deren often in films like "Inland Empire" he makes a lot of references like the key in the mouth, and the women being one in the same, he does this too in "Mulholland Dr.;" and in "Eraserhead" he has a woman, who strongly resembles Deren, rise from a vat of milk like substance in a very sexual steamy scene. He's a total Deren fan, its a given.
Well, David Lynch was clearly inspired by Maya Deren, and especially by "Meshes". Please change the title, I think Maya Deren deserves to be known as the real maker of this (amazing) movie.
And no offense, but I do'nt even see the point of making this video - it's not Lynch-style, it's just Deren-style with a Lynchian music... Please credit Maya Deren in the title !
@AndreasVar if you watch "the grandmother" by david lynch you can definitely see some maya deren influence in it. but yeah, who ever posted this needs to do their research...
@AndreasVar This is cut up and awkwardly spliced back together in a way that failed to emulate Lynch's. It didn't mean the film was made in "David Lynch style," it means it was edited to appear that way (badly). But it's still so annoying that tommythunder worded the title that way!
Seriously, David Lynch has nothing to do with this... it is silly to put his name here. You should remove his name and give credit where credit is due, Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid. This is coming from a huge David Lynch fan.
How is this in any way David Lynch?????? This is merely a truncation (think huge bites taken out) of a truly masterful and influential short film made in the forties by Deren and Hammid, and that adds a less interesting sound track. Go see the real one. "Meshes of the Afternoon" 1 and 2 (fifteen minutes long)
@textcavation I'm sorry, really. At the time when I wrote that I was irritable and sleep deprived. I wasn't thinking quite right. But, I guess what I did mean was that I thought it was funny that you would put it that way; it seemed a little redundant or something in my sleepless stupor. But my intention was agreement. I've taken the comment off because it was stupid. =D No hard feelings?
@doggydookypoop Oh none whatsoever! I should remove mine as well. I'm crabby and sleepdeprived too and that should be a warning never to respond to posts. Or listservs. Or bulletin boards. :) Also, I have a quirky way of writing and should strive to edit but it's so easy just to punch the send button... All best....
Okay...I've got a bone to pick. Maya Deren deserves the credit on this work...not David Lynch. Secondly...I am damn tired of everyone thinking David Lynch is the king of the surreal cinema. He was almost 30 years too late to be part of that movement. Thirdly...I agree with the other people. Lynch was influenced by these people...if he's even seen this film...they were not influenced by him. Lynch edit my ass. He wishes he was this good.

I saw it at the Tate Modern and love it! but this isn't David Lynch, he has this as inspiration. I think you should change the title, just for the real artist. she diserves the repect for making this timeless movie in the 40's
I also saw it at the Tate Modern in June 2009and was totally blown away. I'd never heard of Maya before. Is it still there (in the small viewing room)? I think that this video referred to Lynch's personal tribute to Maya Derren due to her influence on his style.
I saw it in july, I was in London for Mj concert. but we had a blast in London.
I never heard of her too, but I wrote it down so I could look it up. And it was still in the small viewing room, and loved it right away! I thought this was really cool!
this is not lynch style, if anything lynch owes a debt to deren. i think the fact that deren herself directed and wrote this is a major distinction, instead of lynch's interpretation of women.
Penderecki.....!!!!!!
bobiquesada 3 weeks ago
wrong attribution for the film, this is Maya and Alexander's work, not Lynch. Indeed influenced Lynch, but title is basically wrong on many levels.
JudeBigDaddy 2 months ago
Music is Penderecki's "Dream Of Jacob." Better known to film fans as "woman in the bath in The Shining".
jonathanmelia 3 months ago
Yes, Lynch works within the same medium, but the film is already experimental as it is.

Yeah, we know that, Lynch was born 3 years after this movie.
But, you can't deny the surrealistic look that Lynch and Deren share.
