@digitaldown Indeed. There's no way i'm putting windows on a mac though! I don't like BIM anyway as I t feels like i'm on rails and the computer is doing the work for me. Its ideal for commercial architecture I suppose but not for 'real' architecture I you get me. BIM is really bad for customised buildings.
@fobmastafob whats the difference?just about everything, your question is like whats the difference between cars, boats and trucks aren't they all vehicles...
Revit and Rhino are virtually identical, 3ds max is used for games/visualisation/basic animation, it doesn't do scale and isn't accurate. Sketchup, while the interface is nice and intuitive is frankly pants as it tends to produce poor models. Personally I use autoCAD for drafting, Rhino for modelling (still the best in my opinion) and cinema 4D for rendering. I used to use maya, but it isn't supported on lion at the moment. None of these softwares compare to good old pencil and paper though.
@fobmastafob Actually a slight correction, Revit is a BIM software meaning it uses components (i.e. wall stairs etc) in the design process, regular straight drafting is limited. Rhino is a nurds based CAD software primarily designed for drafting, though it has had BIM capability added on later. Personally I prefer CAD over BIM as it is better for customisation, BIM is poor for 'statement' architecture. CAD requires more work though.
@TheFahry20 What do you think is better? I've tried AutoCAD, Revit, Vectorworks, ArchiCAD, Rhino on the CAD/BIM front, and Cinema 4D, max, and Maya on the viz animation side. Bear in mind i'm a mac user though so i've only dabbled with Revit/Max. I have to say Rhino is by far my favorite piece of software.
@Arajack Revit is BIM based, AutoCAD Arch is not. BIM is an integrated process for exploring a project’s key physical and functional characteristics digitally before it’s built, helping to deliver projects faster and more economically, while minimizing environmental impact. Coordinated, consistent information is used throughout the process to design innovative projects; better visualize and simulate real-world appearance, performance and cost; and create more accurate documentation.
how do you get a component family to map to a patterned surface looks like this is actually what you did when you put the curtain panel there but i cannot figure out how to actually do it
shit so many years with archicad and now i have to migrate.. in archicad if u need to get a little crazy in a form its so limitated, but for a square or simple geometry proyect is the best.
@newtechironop i know what you mean, my school has had archicad for 3 years and this year they decided to switch to Revit, archicad is much simpiler to use but i think this will work better in the long run
Please use this software program at your own risk! You dont have to buy it and you dont have to use it. But, you use it if you want to. You can buy it if you want to. No one can force you to use it!!!!!
This is not more than a commercial versión of Sketchup. I agreed with people who asks why Autodesk don´t sell a simple and basic CAD and if you want more funcionality you can add modules like MAYA, 3DS or librarys and templates in order to make someone getting what they want with just a fews clicks, We are NOT using 386 anymore. It´s time to a change of mind for all these products
@EddiopinaR this program is designed for producing architecture plans, sketchup is very unprecise and not directed to making plans. This is just the 3d aspect of the program.
@Pjam2006 no ! in fact sketch up is the most unprecise software that i have ever used! I beleive sketchup is for amateurs ...but this is Revit its the most advanced BIM software and it has much more to give...Im using it and I can't master everything this thing needs several years of work to be mastered...
I wish Autodesk would come out with a universal 3D editor that's shared by all of their programs. You should be able to go from Autocad to 3DS Max or Maya in less than a day. Better yet, why not sell a generic 3D editor with optional add on modules that give it the functionality of Autocad or Maya?
As far as I know it does not, Revit Structure deals mainly with commercial building construction using I-beams. If you want to add wooden trusses to your Residential plans then you have to purchase an add-on software from a company like "Tools4revit" for a few hundred dollars and if you want Rafters they have them too for a few hundred more.
I have seen different plans done on Revit and I can not believe that such a complex and expensive program does not automatically do a truss, all the Residential buildings that I have seen are represented by four walls and a roof, no trusses. Am I wrong?
you must be an idiot, if you had any experience in the professional world (which you may but obviously not enough) Revit and AutCAD have their specific areas of interest. And they are both very amazing pieces of software if you actually know how to use them with the proper hardware
Hahaha woah woah, all i had said was that they are BOTH good for the niche in which you are utilizing. Not that one is better over the other, they are both good programs. The reason Revit has been designed to LOOK like AutoCAD is because it came out AFTER AutoCAD by the SAME developers and publishers, meaning that they wanted people to transition well to Revit.
As for my credentials I went Undergrad at University of Illinois for Civil Engineering and working with Bowman and Barret while attending IIT in Chicago for my masters in Structures. I also worked in the IT field for a few years enhancing the security network for those that used autodesk. There alot of hidden bells and whistles in both. You shouldnt have to PAY youre employees to learn a knew software either, they should have the background in it prior to hiring, or learn somewhere else.
I am so utterly upset I want to cancel all my autocad subscriptions and look into another program like ARCHICAD or something that the MACHINE (Autodesk) will stop destroying, so the TOOL (the user) wont have to waste even more of my time and energy relearning how to use the software interface when I've already relearned and and am finally getting comfortable with.
Honestly who's the genius over there that came up with this !@#$% idea?
Sweet Jesus Christ allmighty they finally did it! YESSSS oohhh yess yes yesssss! No more sore eyes, no more wasted time triangulating surfaces. This is truly a wonderful day.
Thank you Autodesk, you have really made my life better.
Ribbons is a Great addition to New users. For old users, that they have found themselves comfortable with the old UI i believe that whatever the change, they would desliked it. Personaly I change between programmes very ofen so this Ribbonalization of all autodesk programmes would help me a lot i think...
Ribbon in Office 2007 is pure TRASH. I dont find the commands, i dont find what i need if not looking for it for entire minutes.
After over one week use, I still didnt find most of the commands i needed to work, so deleted it and went back to Office 2003. But it costed me only 130 euros.
What if i need to downgrade from revit 2010 to 2009?? Will Autodesk refund me thousand euros? If not, get ready to be sued by my lawyer.I dont waste thousand euros for being unproductive for weeks.
revit is very helpfull for aluminum production like curtain wall skylights domes composite panels
