Many C&W stars have performed and recorded this legendary Harlan Howard song but Roadwarrior3 has always found no one "delivered" it as well as Charlie Walker. RIP C.W.
Why do people think country music is redneck music? that's like saying donk is chav music. it makes no sence because you don't have to be a redneck to enjoy or make country music.
I am in my late 50's and grew up on the rock and roll of the sixties and seventies, but when I was younger at the beer joints with my mom and dad,I sat down in front of the jukebox listening the great country music like this one and I still love the old country greats.
Harlan Howard did not write this song. My cousin did, Jimmie Eustice Jr. Released by him in 1960 - CP-4560 It was his one hit wonder and a whole lot of other country singers have since recorded it.
I remember Charlie Walker and I also listen to him on the radio here in San Antonio over radio station KMAC. I liked this song but I didn’t know that he wrote it and owned it. I never did get to know Charlie Walker but my brother did. He also worked at the same radio station.
@ Flashbell of course thats Jimmy Day thank you as I listened again it jumped out at me that steel solo was in Ray Price's words " My favorite musician and a man that if I were not careful he would mesmerize me to the point of forgetting the words to whatever I was trying to sing at the time. " my mother in law found a photo 1964 of Jimmy and the Cherokee cowboys after a show in Huntington WV. and sent it to his family in TX and they were very nice down to earth folks who really miss Jimmy
You may be their pride and joy but they’ll find another toy and they’ll take away your crown pick me up on your way down They have changed you’re attitude made you haughty and so rude Your new friends can take the blame underneath you’re still the same When you learn these things are true I’ll be waiting here for you As you tumble to the ground Pick me up on your way down
What real country music sounds like. Charlie was part of the best era of CW there ever was or ever will be. One great song that takes me back to a beter time.
Charlie Walker was so Underrated it's not even funny but i really doesn't matter all that matter that his music is being discovered by millions now Oh and by the way Mel Tillis also does Great version of this Song.
I am Charlie's youngest son and I can't start to tell you folks how much we appreciate the fans. We miss him dearly and he was a great father. Always took me hunting, fishing and we played a lot of golf. I played this on guitar to my 4 year old son the other night and told him it was his papaw' Walker's song. He loved it.
Anyone who ever puts down a song for being "stupid or "horrible" sounding to the person needs to give the song there listening to a chance. I don't care what type it is Pop, Rap,Country, Rock whatever it is, they need to listen to the song any understand the lyrics to really understand and love it.
@sessnazx , No, This song was written by the legendary Nashville songwriter, Harlan Howard. It was his first composition to make the charts. You are correct about one thingh, Charlie Walker owns this song!
I mind the time ... (as my grand pappy used to say) when I lived in the country back in 56. The first time I ever heard live music played was in the community hall up the concession a ways. I was fascinated with the story of this woman who I imagined ran away to the city to go night clubing like in the old black & white movies. Funny how impressive a song can be on a young mind. Three thumbs up for me.
When I listen to classic country hits of yesteryear like this, I just can't see how most of what is played on country stations today can even be called country. To me, most of it sounds like a mix of rock & pop. Definitely, most of it is more rock than country. Give me the great "blasts from the past" like this over most of today's stuff any old day. Oh, for those heavenly days of hearing a steel guitar & fiddles in the background! THANK YOU for sharing this delightful gem with us! :)
Thanks mr moto, I've always liked Mooney but this is one the greatest sounds and original style I've ever heard. I did not realize Jimmy Day went back that far. He musta been a kid.........wonder if that was a Fender he was playing?
Charlie used to be a DJ on a local radio station in San Antonio, TX. My sister and I would listen to him every afternoon when we got home from school. Charlie wrote this song and was the first to record it.

Years ago my brother had a country band and this was his favorite song to sing. Sounded just like the orginal version.. Had to be 40 + years ago. It's all gone now the music of real country
I absolutely love this song....thank you so much for bringing back these memories, I sang this song with my grandfather while he played his fiddle and I played the piano....I have not thought about that for 30 years....bless you.

The late Keith Whitley did a great remake of this song. It's on the 2002 compilation RCA Country Legends.

Charlie is pure country and does a super job with this song. Always dependable in giving us some great music. This is one of my favorite songs. I like Porter's version, too, and he sang it often on his TV show. Charlie always looks great and is a wonderful entertainer. Thanks for posting. - Paula

This is the sort of real C&W music that I miss - remember my dad singing this one many times - still a great song from a great artist.
