  • Love this!! Wow!!

  • gives me the chills!

    so good!

  • I had never seen that - what TALENT!!

  • It's hard to believe a 7 year old little kid would have the guts to get up there and do that, what is that like 2nd grade or something. Little Ricky was the man I tell ya.

  • I had an Uncle named Delbert who used to play with Ricky Scaggs and was friends with him. I met Uncle Delbert once when I was like 8 or 9 i am almost 31 now. He sat around and played banjo and acoustic while the family sat around and sang. One of the VERY FEW good memories from my child hood.

  • Ricky is my Dad's Brother's Wife's family. this was performed across the road from My Uncle Chuck's house. We are from Blaine and Martha Ky. Last time I saw Ricky was at my Aunt Stella's Funeral. He spoke with my father Howard Gartin his sister was Stella. He passed away July 3, 2010. Ricky you are a very large part of our family. Johnny your cousin, I see about every week we would like to see you soon. Luv your Cuz Susan Gartin (Blaine & Martha Rocks)

  • Holy Crap!! How can a seven year old sing like that?

  • I've met that little boy. lol!!! He was much older of course. He was very nice.

  • When you're great, you're great... even at 7...

  • This is tops! ..Hey check out "Jake and Josh. Have a Feast Here Tonight" on YouTube. It's a real barn-burner - singin is great it's funny too.

  • I wonder what ever happened to that little boy............ha ha

  • I think Earl thought the kid said "Reuben" as in "Reuben's train" because that's the melody he's playing. But good recovery none the less!!

  • @deputym9 Ruby is a veriation of Reuben

  • @SlimWhitman2803 To me, “Ruby” and “Reuben’s Train” are two different songs. The version of “Reuben’s Train” The Dillard’s play is most like the one I’ve always heard, which is odd since they are from Missouri and I am from SC. Bluegrass songs tend to be a little different depending upon your region. The Dillard's version is on You Tube if you want to hear it. I think this is an outstanding rendition of "Ruby."

  • @deputym9 Okay, so Reuben, Reuben's Train, and Ruby are all different songs?

  • Ricky was on point even at 7 yrs old!

  • notice he is playing the best ''GIBSON'' ..

  • @drdaveturbo .....AMEN !

  • @drdaveturbo Then, yes. Now, not so much. So many mandolin, guitar, and banjo makers out there that are way ahead of Gibson. I would put my custom F Mando against a new Gibson anyday.

  • he was an adorable kid. this has a lot of heart too for so young. guess he was just born for it.

  • this is retarded but i Love Ruby (:

  • Still my favorite version of Ruby ever.

  • If this performance is anything to go by .. Ricky was even more of a child prodigy than the legendary Mark O'Connor. Fabulous footage. PS - folks, a quick plug .. get this and much more by purchasing your 10 volume DVD set of classic episodes from the 1950s / 60s Flatt & Scruggs Grand Ole Opry / Martha White TV Series - availble on the Shenachie label. Finger-lickin GOOD !!

  • This kid will never make it in the big time. Too pitchy dog!!!

  • he's pretty big now.

  • @NOMADdaf He sure did make it to the big time!

  • @NOMADdaf are you being sarcastic or just ignorant to who this little boy has become ? dog ? i think the fake gold in your mr . T starter kit has has made its way into your blood stream and caused some damage to your thinker . ricky skaggs is big time dog .

  • @NOMADdaf .....Thats funny....Take a look at me now!

  • Opra??

  • What a treasure. Thanks for posting!

  • is that Ricky Skaggs as a teeny tiny kid ??

  • @newberry58 Yes,it is. Awesome!

  • does anyone know who wrote this??? song

  • If this kid keeps it up , one day his name will be wide known.

  • grcias por subir es ta cancion

  • That kid would go pretty far in X Factor.. lmao

  • that kid is now a recognized name in bluegrass and country music

  • He is top man in many areas of music Country,Folk as well as producing others musicians even Radio Shows and is in the Grand Ole Opra of fame.

  • i agree and as well as playin mandolin, what a voice, it really cuts thru well. he should go far lol!

watch the gibson video of Ricky Skaggs telling how he played on stage with Bill Monroe when he was six .

  • awesome...

  • i seen him at dollywood ,he was very good

  • Wow! Such a talent, even at the tender age of seven! You can tell that he gave Flatt and Scruggs both such a chuckle of delight to hear him sing the lines, "Honey, are you mad at your man?"...it's just adorable! Thanks so much for sharing the video...just great. : )

  • Ricky, you're amazing.

  • Totally darling.

  • the song is actually called "ruben" written by earl scruggs

  • Actually, the music to the song is from the old tune Reuben, also known as Reuben's Train.

Still, Earl didn't write it. It was the first tune he arranged 3 finger style, when he was a lad.

When Bobby and Sonny Osborne recorded the song "Ruby", they took the the music from the forementioned tune and added words to it.

  • well yeah thats what i meant

  • I love the way the band behind him is laughing and seem tickled to death just listening to such a young kid playing and singing like that. They think it's a crack-up.

  • Just saw Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder at Warren Performing Arts center last Saturday. Well worth the price of admission. Skaggs has been playing music for almost 50 years (and he's only 55).

  • saw that show also. wow!!! I'm 61 and it was good to feel like a kid. The average age must have been 75.

  • I'm 33, so you can imagine I felt like an infant there. My brother and I were at the last Bean Blossum festival that Bill Monroe played. We were 19 and 14. The next youngest that year was easily 70. One of my best musical memories ever :)

  • Ricky was born in 1954 and here is 7 years old so this film is not as old as it looks since it was 1961 when it was made but ricky did get a very early start and he's one of my favorites today.

  • I'm Not Sure, But I Bet A Man Could Make A Good Living Singing Like That !!!

  • honey are you mad at your man

  • Looks like he got it early. Amazing

  • omg that is so adorable. look at his face.

  • well ding dang durn boy!

  • This is a PRICELESS video !

    Thanks for posting!

  • Ever notice this song is "Ruby" when they sing, but if they play it as an instrumental, it is called "Reuben"? lol

  • Yeah, I just now was thinking the same thing. Lol. Never noticed until now.

  • He went on to become a staple in country music and gospel singing..the real deal!

  • Thank you for your replies!

    sparkyhokie

    swimmingis4me

    Rgds.,

    John

  • This song is terrific.

    The kid is very talented.

Does anyone know what what he went on to do?

  • LOL! Yes. He went on to be Mr. Ricky Skaggs! He won a lot a stuff! Married to Sharon White of the whites. The whites played in the movie O Brother where art thou.

  • killer.

  • ADORABLE:)

  • Ricky...You make Kentucky proud!!!

  • Wow..

  • thats awesome i never knew he sang that young

  • .. i like this child ;)

  • Yeah, I think he might be pretty good someday...

  • earl scruggs and ricky scaggs!!that sounds better than sliced bread.thanks for shairing.

  • its both you neophytes. reuben and ruby are played the same on banjo. open d tuning. get it right and quit wasting comment space.

  • Playing a Gibson PRICELESS

  • Great song.

  • Rueben would be ok if your batting for the other team

  • Hey Banjomaster the song is Ruby you are confused

  • its rueben not ruby haha

  • It is Ruby a Osbourne Brothers song. The music does sound like Ruben. Maybe you should rethink your name. How can you be a banjomaster if you are not even familiar with the Osbourne Brothers.

  • Calm down, i didn't listen to the full song, i heard the intro and it was the bano intro for rueben. I'm familliar with the osborne brothers, and my homepage says im not a master of the banjo.

  • I didn't know, the banjo is the same exact as rueben.

  • This is great!! Thanks for posting it!

  • What talent.

  • lol.

  • How awesome to find this video! Thank you for posting it. I'm from the area where Ricky Skaggs grew up, and I know alot of my neighbors would be so surprised to see this video.

  • I saw Ricky at the Palamino Club in N. Hollywood. He was playing fiddle for Emmylou Harris. The next day, I happen to run into him at a gate at the airport. So I sat down with him and talked to him. He was one of the most humble and nicest people I've ever met. I'm delighted to see this video of him. What a talented individual, and the joy he has brought and is bringing into peoples lives.

  • ricky says he was six.....

  • Give credit were credit is due! For a kid that age that whole moment was intimidating,,especially with all the cameras in his face!

  • yo tengo muchas quesaheras porque yo soy alto

  • I can't believe that a little small boy can sing an song of that genre and keep all the ballads in tack and i totally tip my hat off to little Ricky skaggs.

  • JAJAJA. Y ESTOS QUIENES SON????

  • ricky was so lucky to grow up around the masters

  • @goldsmithstudent Yeah! Ricky was a dang good player even back then. XD

  • great ..

  • "And you're how old?" Wow! That's echt Appalachian, like that slurry "skaygss".

  • pretty good for a youngin his size. wonderful. KEEP THE VIDS COMIN

  • Thanx for adding this - we love it!

  • wow...

  • Saw Ricky in concert with the Chieftan's in Baltimore in 2006, that was one great show.

  • I posted this on another video, but there is a story of two brothers who were coming into Kentucky about the time Daniel Boone was,1774 or there abouts. These boys were "long hunters" too and were probably the first Skaggs to come into Ky.Probably Ricky's ancestors...We are very proud of Ricky here in Kentucky.

  • I think his voice is higher now!

  • How does a 7 yr old learn to play like this? I mean of course it is a god given talent, but he must have had parents that nurtured this. Does anyone know if they were musicians as well?

  • I think Dorothy was a singer...not sure if Hobart played or sang anything.

  • his hair style hasnt changed much either.

He is five yrs old right?

    Thanks

  • 7yrs old

  • Great video!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this. Ricky Skaggs has always been one of my favorites in this genre.

  • Ran into Ricky several times over the years. He's every bit the picker at !

  • This is featured on the Best of the Flatt and Scruggs TV Show Volume # 3 DVD.

  • Uploads like this one are the reason I LOVE YOUTUBE!!! Thanks!

  • Get rid of the zeros please!

  • This young man might just make it (!!!!!!!!!). Not bad for a puggler!

  • Garrison Keillor from Prairie Home said this was here, how cool.

  • He had the high lonesome sound even then!

  • Saw Skaggs in 83 with Flacke and company. I love heavy metal (RR greatest rock guitarist ever) However, Ricky is awesome. Love all kinds of music. Ricky always delivers!! Too bad the video of him and Tony Rice got yanked.

  • this roars like waylong jennings and keith richards have possessed scruggs. or maybe he infected them way before. hmmm. yes. and go ricky. wail it out from the top of your mountain.

  • cool

  • cute as a button and good to know he still is talented

  • Awesome! Simply awesome!!!

  • funny banjoe and funny kid

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!

  • Amazing!!....what a classic!!!..

  • I can get you on stage hillbilly.......might not be the grand ol opera though

  • Sorry it took me so long to reply, where could yo get me onstage?

  • Anyone know how I can play with Earl? Or Ricky for that matter. Or Doc, or Doyle Lawson, or the lewis family, or someone popular in the bluegrass community?

Come on, doesn't somebody know somebody who knows somebody who can get me onstage?

  • Hillbilly...you need to try getting into some fiddlers conventions somewhere. I think they have amatures playing in those.

  • you'd have to pay your dues and work hard before you can get onstage with Ricky

  • You known I really didn't know how things would just fall into place for my band back when I wrote that message. Its not hard getting on a stage after all. As a matter of fact, we might be playing in a vetrans day parade next year and we're already planned that we're playing on a locla station the 24th of this month.

    Life is good!

  • oh ... sweet ^^

  • Why dont we see kids like that anymore today? Because their faces are buried in video games and computers.. and their parents dont care. thats why.

  • no actualy they would get beaten up -.-

  • they never got beaten up before. once again, parents today lack the skills to train their kids to behave and act accordingly. they let their kids tell THEM what to do. its pathetic.

  • Dogote82: If you'd like to see some kids today playing bluegrass, search YT for "El Cumbanchero" and watch the Tuttle kids. (Username TaterPatch) Their other videos will also blow your mind.

  • thanks :D i really apreciate that. those kids are awesome

  • Ricky Skaggs is gifted musically, as is Lester, and Earl. I love Blue Grass music. This video is one of my favorites on here, thanks for sharing.

  • This is great and it's funny to see how big the mandolin looks on him. He grew up into a big fella and now he dwarfs that sucker.

  • He even played with Earl Scruggs at 7!

  • aww, what a charming little boy!

    god is he lovely.

  • AMAZING

  • iloveme some ruby:]

    and ricky skaggs hes awesome.

im only 12 and bluegrass is my life!

  • What a treasure this video is. Ricky Skaggs sounds like an angel. I wish there were some more of these around.

  • This video is awesome!

  • The boy is a FREAK!

  • Hey shut the hell up. DO you know who he is? Hes Ricky Skaggs. I'd like to see you play the mandolin like that at 7 years old!

  • he is interduced later on in the show. that portion is just nnot shown here.

  • Thanks for posting this!!!

  • littl'Ricky : O !!!

    OK , i understand better now !

  • This blows

  • what are you watching it for anyway...you're probably 20 yrs old...don't know a thing about music! geez

  • whoa, what does age have to do with it? i'm 18 and i know alot about music. and i like bluegrass, specially the old stuff.

  • Careful, gregdodgemopr. Your mommy might kick you off the computer. Ricky Skaggs is a great musician AND a great man. If you met him, you would likely w/draw your comment.

  • You know something, I was wrong and commented off handidly. I apologize if I offended anyone here, especially Mr. Scaggs. By the way, I am 44 and my mom died 18 years ago from ahlzeimers.

  • "Ruby" is the first time I heard it played this way. Ricky Scaggs is unbelievable to be able to both sing and play at the same time. I know. He is a prodigy and that explains it.

    "cat"

  • amazing...7 years old.

  • That's Ricky Skaggs at 7 yrs old

  • Great vid of "Picky Ricky"

  • I rated it a 5. it was an Awesome video.

    Thanks for posting it.

  • i love ruby!

  • Yay! Purty nice quality being a 1958 Martha White show!
