I used to see the Bhundu Boys a lot, they were a wonderful live band. The album was a disappointment, but a rectifiable one I always thought. I seem to remember an interview with Biggie saying they planned to do things differently in later recordings, but I guess that didn't happen. One of the great losses to music. Thanks for uploading.
please don't apologize for the poor quality of the video. What you possess is a priceless video of one of Zimbabwe's best musical ensemble....Thanks for posting it....
The biggest mistake, I believe, was to fire Biggie Tembo, the enigmatic vocalist. We used to refer to the band as ''Biggie Tembo and the Bhundu Boys.'' If they had stayed with Biggie I believe this band could have been playing to this day and taking care of the families of the band members who died. In fairness they could have replaced the drummer, the bassist, etc without losing the fluidity in the teamr. These guys could have been multi millionaires, their families are destitutes.
I think they asked Biggie to leave because he spearheaded the ill-fated move to mix Zim-styles with more western-styles once they were based in UK. But the UK crown didn't like the new style, neither did Zimbabwe, so they blamed him.
Mugabe is an idiot. Africa stand up. This illness should not be happening in Zimbabwe. Watch these amazing guys and know how it once was. The joy, the spirit, the intellect.
dont lie ashley thomas mapfumo was the first musician to conquer europe, when he released mr music africa album in the early 80's.save some lies for your kids
This brings me back to my youth. When Zim was still a good place to live, we didn't even imagine the horrors that awaited us in the new millenium. When we got potonjeri at school, when $200 could buy you a house.
Bhundu Boys, the greatest band out of Zim. There've been a lot more since but not on this scale. They conquered Europe before the likes of Mapfumo & Mtukudzi had captured Zim.
Sad though is the tragedy that befell them. It's only thru their music that we remember what we once had.....
I'm here commenting due to my curiosity about the poor tormented yet gifted dj/journo Andy Kershaw. He had this track as one of his Desert Island Discs choices in 1986.I'm going 2 his next choice now,Bob Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone, then the Clash..etc..Yeah, this is 'feelgood' one, definately!
Andy Kershaw chose this? Wow. Respect. He is a man that knows his world music. I think this song got some decent coverage in the UK in 1986. It was on Saturday Night Live with Ben Elton et al.
Hope Andy K is doing alright. Some bad stuff happened last year didnt it?
Music brings people together, Not the bickering Going on back home as we speak. White vs Black, I think most of us have moved on and willing to enjoy lyfe.
youre right , so sad.The drummer Kenny Chitsvatsva one of the remnants is playing with a band called Harare based in Willesden ie north west london , Led by Kuda Matimba, its like the old days are coming back , all inspiration is bundu boys, I have played with them before and im in touch with them
Yeah they are still playing , changed their band to Harare music , the name bundu means death everywhere and most of the guys are late, bundu boys were originally form harare so they decided that name, stil playing the bundu tracks and other new ones as well , i have played with them before when i was on my vacation (uni), in plymouth .check the harare music myspace, lovely
Rise Kagona is playing with a Scottish dude these days - Champion Doug Veitch. Nothing on youtube yet, but you should check them out live if you ever get the chance. The album is called Tanzwa Nekutambura (We've Suffered Enough) on the RDKV Music label.
these guys were just great and well traveled. Pity music didn't pay that well then otherwise they wouldn't have died paupers
