It is reputed that American Italian Romantic composer Anthony L Scarmolen was writing in this style before Schoenberg. He stopped though and developed the "Hollywood Sound" like Miklos Roza and Erich Korngold.

i liked it, helped alot, I gotta do a musical presentation on Schoenberg. The question is Schoenberg saw himself as a traditionalist and serialism as the logical next step in the history of music (rather than a radical break with the past). He also claimed that serialism would ensure that German music remained at the forefront of music for the ensuing century. Do you agree/disagree with him on both assertions?

Before Serialism was devised there existed "atonal music". Schoenberg, Webern, Berg all wrote "free" atonal music before deciding to use a system to compose it. They wrote free atonal music for quite a while. Franz Liszt also started to write atonal music in his late period as well as Charles Ives in America. The latter composers never used Schoenberg's twelve tone technique.
