Yet ironically, most of the longest matches recorded in history, and the longest match ever are all on hardcourts. You really don't need to be as fit if you play on clay. I've played on practice clay courts many times and by experience, hardcourts take a much bigger chunk out of your energy since you are just pounding and pounding on the court. Nadal is fast which makes him dangerous. His endurance was questionable though because he would get really tired during long rallies.

Bottom line for me. Nadal is the best clay court player ever. He's been he 2 best player on grass at Wimbledon in the last two years, and just won Artois which is a grass court. He's getting better; his serve as gotten a lot better too. He needs to flatten out some balls on the hard courts, but he still is getting better there too.

Meaning, Nadal is getting closer to Federer on grass than Federer is to Rafa on clay. As was displayed thoroughly this year at the French Open. Of course I do not think that Nadal is anywhere close to Roger in the legacy category, but head to head, he's been more successful, and he looks that he is getting closer to beating Roger on grass.

What is just disappointing when comparing Roger's and Rafael's careers is the amount of stupid comments people make... I mean when Nadal only had 2 Rolland Garros, a Wimbledon final and like a 7-2 head to head record against Federer, many people, especially girls who don't play tennis and just go for looks apparently, already put Nadal in front of Federer which is absurd and even called him one of the greatest of all time with just 2 Grand Slams. Federer's playing style suits grass and hard court, not clay. And opposite with Nadal. He will never be as good on grass or hard court than he is on clay. Also Fed is not a bad clay player. Two finals and a semi, that's really good. He's getting better and one day Fed will win the French open. Just like Nadal will win on grass.

Roger is actually a very good clay court player.

He has won Hamburg Masters 4 times i think and has made the French Open final twice.

It aint that he hasn't mastered clay yet,Its because he keeps on bumping into the best clay court player in the world today Rafael Nadal and loses.

If there was no Nadal,Federer would have won a French Open by now and maybe a few more Masters titles on the surface.

While Nadal is an incredibly difficult player on clay, Federer can beat Nadal on it more often, but he chooses to be defensive at the wrong times. While Nadal is counter-punching, he is still hitting the ball completely through so that he isn't really play all that defensive. Federer however gets stuck in many rallies where he hits the ball back very defensively (especially off the backhand side) and allows his opponents to take over. I think he has to come into the net more and take chances.

Federer has not yet mastered the clay. On other surfaces in the past, I think Rafa had some sort of psychological hold over him. With his wins over Rafa in Wimbledon and Shanghai, I think that Roger is starting to believe that he can beat Rafa. However on clay, there is no one who can match Rafa's game. Federer can compete, and maybe even push Rafa, but it seems as if Federer is still unsure of how to utilize his considerable skills on the clay.
