i cant only hold for 20 seconds. lol. the 8 part at the very end didn't really work danny. sorry but it didn't. but the 4 tag was great despite the stuff up at 0:28
@jaydudeGDX No you're wrong. The four part was awful too! The only reason I keep this online is for a reminder of how far I've come and my sound and technique has improved. :)
you like having random parts hold notes for exceptionally long times, don't you? i've seen a couple of your videos that have one person holding ridiculously long notes....
@gwars66002 No offense taken, This is an awful display of vocal technique.. like seriously. I should just remove this from youtube, but I"m too lazy. It's terrible.
36 sec post... omg, wonder how long it takes to be able to have that great of breath support? i need to learn how to do that xD that was insane btw!! 5/5*!!!
Amazing! im thinking about trying this with my quartet, cant pull out all the notes from your video though. Could you please tell me where you found that tag?
Woahhhh..what was that last chord? After the 4/3 resolved it just turned into such an awesome clustery thing haha. Was it a 9th chord? And also, does your camera shoot in HD? This video isn't the best at showing it, but most of your others are GREAT quality when you click the HD button.
well, after the 4/3 resolves, i think that there is still actually a 4th there, so you get that clash, and then of course there will most probably be other 6ths, 7ths and 9ths =P
Wow this is so cool! I love the jazz chords! You're pretty dang talented to put all this together, those chords sound pretty complex. I love how the last chord still has consonance even within the dissonance. Very cool, my friend :).
The disonence that emerges (0:45-0:46) between the B flat 4 and A4 is absolutely marvelous! Awesome 8-part arrangement! That would be a hell of a piece to do live.
I'm amazed. I actually wrote the original 4-Part version of this tag. I can't believe someone actually picked it up and made a video out of it!!! Not crazy about the 8-Part version, but a nice effort on your part all the same.
Wow, never expected to hear from the writer of the tag. It's a great tag, too bad not many people have done it on youtube. The 8-part version was kind of a joke, and then turned more into a vocal jazz arrangement at the end.
Don't even get me started on Whitacre. That man is a genius. And Lux especially, it has a lot of sentimental meaning to many of the people in my high school's music department. The wind band arrangement is a very personal and emotional piece to us. ANYWAY, I agree about the last chord haha.
you should work on trying to keep your sound forward. On the 'uh' (as in took, book, goodbye) vowel, the placement tends to go back into your throat. make sure you keep it forward and pingy
yeah my vocal technique on this song was pretty brutal compared to most other things i've done. thanks for the constructive criticism though, I appreciate it.
Dan, again, I have nothing but applause. Really nice job on this one (as always). And of course, my offer stands - if you need another vocal (I would record remotely and you could mix, or vice-versa), just let me know. Great stuff!
Thanks a lot! I am going to be doing some collaborative things soon, but with a couple guys from France as well as another from Halifax; but if you have a cool song or tag in mind, feel free to record a couple parts and maybe if I get time I could throw mine on top and mix it together.
Thanks for the comment :), I understand, It's very dissonant, it contains the suspended 4th as well as obvious third, the semi-tone difference clashes a lot. Not everyone likes it but with a certain appreciation for dissonant harmonies such as many jazz chords as well as pieces by artists such as Eric Whitacre some people get a kick out of it.
Outstanding! Reminds me of some of Stan Kenton's chords. For those who haven't heard Kenton's music all I can say is treat yourself and give a listen.
Very nice work Danny! I think that the most interesting moment in this tag is when you have both the 3rd and sus4 (A and Bb) in your final chord. Did you have any trouble singing these disonant harmonies to your recording?
good ear :), I didn't really because if you notice on the first time I have the sus 4 resolving. On the second time it was as simple as doubling the sus 4 and then just sustaining the note. I don't really have to much trouble with hitting specific pitches.
i cant only hold for 20 seconds. lol. the 8 part at the very end didn't really work danny. sorry but it didn't. but the 4 tag was great despite the stuff up at 0:28

The final chord sounds interesting... very ethereal.
DatSuKid 2 years ago 10
@DatSuKid It's because of the ever appealing Bb still creating that "ethereal" and very beautiful dissonant sound.

BUT
first, try not to lean your head back,
second, form your mouth and you'll get a brighter sound
and third, its fun with new harmonics but this is a little bit too hybrid.
but try my tips and let me see your next tag EVEN BETTER ;D
keep up

I'd call the tag less of a barbershop tag and more of a barbershop-jazz hybrid tag. That last chord is definitely not barbershop.
It's pretty entertaining though. Sometimes an occasional break from the barbershop major chord structures can be refreshing.
