  • Humanizing technology in a way to make it do the work for you and not let the user do the hard work to do the job

  • An excellent unbiased camera review. I wish more reviewers were like this.

  • So blunty, i love your videos but which one should i choose? I have Nikkor lenses but no sony so should i choose a Nex 7 or a v1 with a ft1 adapter?

  • @Lerineo I've not used the NEX7, but it's the lower models are superb. I've not used the FT1 yet (I'm actually getting one in for review very soon), but if you've invested in a lot of good F-Mount glass you may be better off with the V1 simply because of that. But really, it all depends on what your priorities are when it comes to various aspects of performance... and that's something only you can decide for yourself.

  • @Blunty3000 The thing is that i'am used to the D700 and i don't won't to lose to much quality, and the v1 seems more like a beginners camera while the Nex 7 seems to be aiming at the "semi pro" users. So do would the f mount lenses make any difference with the small sensor?

  • @Lerineo Like I said.. it all depends on what your priorities are when it comes to various aspects of performance... and that's something only YOU can decide for YOURSELF. *cough*takethehint*COUGH ;P

  • @Blunty3000 Haha, okay! Ill take the hint ;) Anyway, i look forward of your ft1 review with the v1 cause i seriously looking to buy one soon cause of my absent d700.. Hope your getting it soon ;)

  • Fantastic review!!! Well done mate.

  • Kodak has "good cameras" too, & they're maybe 2 weeks away from bankruptcy, having p*ssed away their industry dominance of 15 years ago by not embracing changing customer profiles. @ current price levels the V1 (& it's cheaper, just as outrageously priced J1 sibling) offers no advantages to what current or future m4/3 & beginner dslr users experience now, except for a few "parlor tricks", & a bigger battery. Message to Nikon: classing up your mid-price offerings won't endanger high-end sales.

  • Nice review here, honest, hilarious at times AND very informative (not like certain other camera review channels, you know the ones im talkin about...). You actually made me want a camera I had every reason to hate!

  • @FUNNzilla I certainly do know the types you're talking about ;( and "You actually made me want a camera I had every reason to hate!" - Kooky isn't it, quirky little bugger surprised me too

  • Lol, you can buy a Canon S95 for 1/3d of the price of the V1 and it got the same quality! Both are sharp with good light. No bokeh too!

  • Well done Blunty, that was great to watch. I love your commentary. Most certainly the best review around on the v1. Apart from that camera chick with big boobs. Buts its not really the camera or what she is saying you focus on!

  • My mum is getting me a new camera for christmas but can't decide which one to chose ether nikkon or the new samsung.

  • Was wondering if the pictures are blurred when they are taken in a low light environment and the objects are moving since there is no flash?

    Thanks and great review!

  • Hey Blunty. I´m getting rid of my Canon 5D and a bunch of L lenses because it´s just so big and bulky I never bring it with me and I´m not that great a photographer.

Witch one do you think is better Pentax Q ot the V1?

    Video is pretty important also.

    Thanks for a great channel.

    Jerry

  • @SgtMcNasty You're in luck. I have extensive reviews of both cameras. Watch them, then make up your own mind on what suits you best.

  • DON'T DO IT!

If you HAVE to have one now buy a Canon s100 or Fuji X10 (lovely)

If you can wait Canon will be bringing their mirror less camera version out next year

The Nikon 1 series is called the 1 series because there will only ever be 1 series.

Nikon WILL introduce better and dump these .. if you can wait LONG TERM.....

  • How are the macro shots?

  • Hey quick question. How do you think it would do in low light for, say, a group portrait (particularly noise levels when compared to a 1/2.3" compact)? Thanks. :)

  • @rml695 It'd definitely dominate your compact camera. The real question is the Sony NEX cameras: they have DSLR-sized sensors, so there's a real chance they might do better. But they also have bigger lenses and slightly bigger bodies, so it depends on just how badly you need that size. Nikon's bargain here, I think, is the J1 -- it's 90-95% of the V1 for considerably less money.

  • "Let the camera do it's thing. Don't fiddle with it too much." That right there just changed my mind about buying one because I was actually considering it.

  • Ah that was french? :D <3 u

  • I'd say that the size and picture quality (as shown by your fotage) would make me buy this camera as a smaller "backup" camera for trips where the DSLR is too big, too chunky, too... expensive?

I also think that pulling this white little thing out would freak people out less that whipping a big honking DSLR with added intimidation factor (big lens) on a dinner or a party. The v1 with it's sleek design looks more like fun and joy than any of the, rather pretentious looking, retro design cameras.

  • How does it compare to other mirrorless fomats? too bad no one mentions the competition...

  • good rewiew as always. italy loves u!

  • sounds like this is for people like my mom; want an expensive, powerful camera so they can do some real photography, but don't have the time/aren't interested in learning how to operate a DSLR. more powerful than a PnS, simpler than a DSLR, sounds like a niche waiting to explode if you ask me!

  • @RyTrapp0 that's what the Micro 4/3's exist for.

  • Bad camera. I won't get that. The control is very old

  • This is the ugliest expensive camera. If product design not your strong point dont force it.

  • @blunty3000 doing a major project, wondering if its worth getting a Sony Handy cam (1080p and all that) for video OR getting the Nikon v1 for video .

  • Where in china is that ????

  • Okay I'm sure I didn't make a bad choice now... Thanks great review xD

  • I love how your reviews are edited. They are really good.

  • This is a damn good review I really liked it, best review I've found on the internet! I'm considering buying the V1, to replace my Nikon D300S in certain situations. I really love that camera, but I'm searching for one who is a little bit smaller and lighter.

  • One problem with how to advertise the camera is how cheap it often end up looking on stills. Ad-photos are mostly extremely smoothed out and got really high contrast, making the already minimalistic smooth design look pale and plasticy.

But in a video like this it looks stunning! A perfect metal mix of retro with something sci-fi-isch, all in a small package. They really need video-ads and get stores to take them in, although I can see J1 and V1 becoming a rare thing to find there.

  • ps btw I forget the name but there is a product called the mini muff or something like that, that cuts back on wind. Its small and fluffy and sticks to the camera. Looks silly but works.

  • great review as per and I agree, I have no idea who this is for. CSCs are not usually this expensive and I can see alot of people willing to drop £800 on a camera thinking "I might just go for the d7000 instead". Saying that, after playing with the j1, I could see me going for the v1 when I need a decent smaller camera for traveling/days out when my d700 is just too bulky.

Any idea if manual focus is possible at all with the kit lens blunty?

  • @photographymatt Manual focus is available with the kit lenses yes, it's via the scroll-wheel on the back panel, and provides a magnified peaking while focusing to help you nail it. Works well, but it isn't especially elegant.

  • @Blunty3000 oh right, similar to the compacts that allow manual focus. um I could live with that. thanks mate. :-) Would be interested to see how these two(j and v1) handle the adapter for nikon F mount lenses

  • LOL your not gonna kick her out if she farts :P

  • wow! the slowmo looks very cool, hey blunty you should make a review of the sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX9V I've heard it is the best sony can offer on point and shoot cameras :D

  • The more I understand Nikon's aims the more I get this camera. Small clean 10mp images are all a photo layman with some IQ standards need, still the price. That is their insanity, Nikon has completely missed the boat there. These cameras are literally twice what they should be and Nikon's targeted buyer bases are going to just make due with S95s, or if their adventurous those bargain first gen M43 cameras.

No one willing to spend this kind of money on a camera is going to ignore M43 or nex.

  • @Danaceb Brand new cameras, all new system of cameras in fact, lots of research and development costs to try an recoup (they've been working on the Nikon 1 system for half a decade apparently)... the price will come down, and I don't think it'll take too long for that to happen.

Early adopters always pay the premium.

  • I simply DON'T get these cameras - unless the market place is LIFESTYLE and not for real photographers at all, this could also explain the MAD TOO HIGH prices. Having said that I have played with a J1 and was surprised how nice it felt, then again no better than say a Canon s95. Would I buy one of these or a Fuji X10. Easy - the X10 is miles ahead and designed to take pictures!

  • eightt... hundred dollars.....

  • hay Blunty, how many camera's do you own from this date?

  • @CrazyCake49 Either "too may" or "not enough" depending on if I'm trying to decide which one to pick up for a photo-walk, or if I'm looking at something new and exciting ;)

  • that slow mo waterfall shot was really cool

  • I love the white finish to be perfectly honest, it's a nice change of pace.

I would love to compare this to the newer Sony NEX range as well as the Olympus PEN in terms of price points and performance, do you have a preference or recommendation?

  • @EchoKrome Agreed, I think the V1 looks better in that high sheen white than black... not as subtle though (then again, you should see the RED one!)

The PEN's, NEX's and Nikon 1's each have their strong suits and weaknesses when directly compared, both in performance, lens selection, control and handling... All are great cameras in their own right, really. Picking between them when it comes to splashing the cash really is a matter of personal priorities.... and it's a bloody tough choice too.

  • "[About bokeh] ... It's not wildly sexy, if it were a metaphorical woman, I'd not kick it out of bed for farting."

    BWAHAHAHAHAHA! I loved that.

  • "Too quick for your pathetic squishy human eyes to even have noticed." FABULOUS!!! :)

  • I think this camera is for those people that have the money for a DSLR but don't know how to use one, so they can look cool without being cool

  • I guess what they want to was make a camera to people who fell in love with taking pictures from the phones they got. And this could be step into DSLR for them, where they can fiddle with the settings, and because they reside in sub menus they will require to know what they did to make the picture. So they learn what they are doing til they maybe get a DSLR. But think its build for more a phone camera replacement with better quality.

  • After watching DRtv's review of this camera, I was like this camera SUCKS. But after watching your review I kinda like this camera, in a way the menu system is sort of like the Sony NEX cameras.

  • great review.

i'm reviewing your review... and it was great

  • I wonder how many Nikon 1 hater have actually used the camera?

  • Wow I want it now...

Your review made me want this camera I only have a Sony Cyber Shot and it is kinda bad when I compare it to this... haha very bad compared to this.

Now I need to actually go outside and pratice photography cause Im a noob in that field...

  • sooo, i watch your reviews on products i have no desire to purchase.... that is testament to how good your reviews are.

  • out of curiosity blunty, when you talked about the specs sheet there was no mention of megapixels. So just how many megapixels does this have?

  • @U23Drocs 10mp

  • Do you think they could have put a standard hot-shoe on this without sacrificing design? It looks from the video as though a standard hot-shoe wouldn't fit on the top at its current size.

Other than that, really good review, and it looks like an awesome camera, especially for video. That second special mode it has reminds me of a feature in the latest iMovie, except doing it straight on the camera would be so much cooler!

  • @LOTRzagorath Easily... the PEN EP-3 is ever so slightly thinner and it has a standard hot-shoe, WITH an intelligent interface for advanced accessories.

  • @Blunty3000 Ah, OK. Fair enough then. They don't have that excuse :)

  • Businesses that make risks make being a business student nice and easy :)

  • Cool..a nice honest well-rounded review. It seems that video could in fact be its strong point as opposed to it being a dedicated "photo" camera.

  • thx you will get oneNikon V1

  • Make sure you damn well Google the price of the camera- well just read Blunty's description.

  • Kay W (in his very special way) shows what's the real trouble with the V1 is.

  • lol

  • Just simply an amazing review! Thank you Blunty!

  • how much is it in euros?

  • Exceedingly good review, thanks for taking the time and effort to put it together

  • Hey Blunty, has anyone who has seen your filming studio and doesn't know you make these youtube videos thought it was like a porn filming place?

  • Man normally when you review a camera it looks good but I'm never convinced to choose one over the other simply because I don't really know what I want. . . . Until now! Oh man thank you so much for bringing this into my attention, it's exactly what I'm looking for!

  • Blunty, you're a jedi.

  • I'm not a camera expert.

If I use this camera in a dark place like a bar at night, wouldn't I need to mount a flash unit in order to take a decent picture of people?

Because to me, It almost looks like this thing will get the job done somehow.

    Please explain.

  • blunty did a better job at reviewing this camera than DRtv !

  • @Noobstate AND I did it with a cooler accent. ;P

  • @Noobstate I'm not sure about others, but I watch DRtv for comical value and maybe a little bit to see how the new cameras perform. Much like topgear...don't take it as a proper review :)

  • @Noobstate yea, i hate drtv, i unsubscribed to them long ago.. theyre a bunch of idiots trying too hard to be funny

  • I was at Homebush Sydney Olympic Park aquatic centre tonight and nikon guys were all over the place. There were big white posters with nothing but black writing on them saying things like "I am Unique", "I am Inspired" and "I am a Revolution". Im pretty sure they were filming an ad.

Looks like they're gonna market the hell out of this thing.

  • @Xenphenik Yeah, the marketing is gonna hit high gear... Keep an eye out, Sydney bus stops and train stations etc. have had Nikon 1 posters all over the place since launch day a week ago. Will be interesting to see if they were shooting an ad... I've been loving almost all of the "I am..." Nikon tv ads (and in speaking to the Nikon people on my recent trip to China, I can tell you they're proud as hell of them too ;) ).

  • Yeah... The V1 itself looks like one of those camera just for traveling... It seems as though it's been dumbed down in a way, I don't think i'd bu- HOLY CRAP SLOW MOTION?!?!

  • @donkeykongman0 My exact thought process.

  • @donkeykongman0 So, I just put a thumbs up, but your comment was so spot on. I was basically like "Nice. Could be used as a backup. But... meh... May-OOOOOOOOooooh. Slomo!"

  • saying bigger is better allways about the sensor is like saying only megapixels matter. god how i love that "WE HAVE A 5MP SMART PHONE CAMERA, and its probably shittier than your 3.15 MP Sony Ericsson from 2006."

  • @drago433 No, it's not like saying "only megapixels mater". There are certain physics that come into play. I never EVER said anything about the pixel count, "bigger is almost always better" is purely about physical sensor size, which DOES have various significant benefits for achieving goals in producing images.... like, as I mentioned, being able to more easily achieve a significantly narrow depth of field which can isolate a subject and really make it stand out form the softened background.

  • @Blunty3000 yea like the picture you chose to win the contest.

  • I'm sure is a very nice compact camera, but for the kind of money it costs you could get a good entry level DSLR. Not anywhere near as compact I know, but just seems waaaay over priced. the RRP in the UK is £829.99 for god sake!

  • This is all good however one question does haunt me. Is the bird really the word?

  • your reviews are simply the best, thanks again Blunty!

  • Is it just me, or do other people prefer the bigger bulkier camera to these slimmed down cameras? I've tested this type of camera & every time i pull one out i feel like such a hipster douchebag toser... Like i've pulled out some sort of toy camera that i'm pretending to use ironically, because i'm to lazy to learn to use a real full sized big boy camera.

  • @matthewlane End result is what counts, not what you think you "look like" holding the sodding camera. Be less vain.

  • "Slim it down," it's thicker than the EP-3?

  • @MrLouisBrooks Not necessarily physically, but operationally... make it less complicated. And for the record, it's only marginally thicker than the EP-3, as near as makes no practical difference in fact.

  • @Blunty3000 That makes sense, but you'd think that it would be smaller than the EP-3, considering the the smaller sensor.

  • I'm thinking the camera's for novices who appreciate decent cameras but are too lazy to learn how to use one properly.

  • For us U.K. People this will cost around £755 on amazon

  • I gotta say it....

In your opinion how does this stack up against your EP-3?

  • @Genericwizardguy Better in some ways; like dynamic range and low light performance... worse in others; like lack of full-on control and DOF ability, poorer selection of lenses (for now), feels more "point and shoot" than "pro gear" in use... if I had to pick which one I'd buy right now (if I hadn't already got both) it'd be a very hard decision to make. The V1 has a lot of potential to be wildly good fun once more exciting lenses arrive.

  • Pretty awesome bit-o-kit. Kicks the shit outta my Sony DSC-W350 compact camera!

Around the 14:40 mark where you're holding it in your hand, you get a real idea just how small this camera is!

Anyway, great video as always mate.

  • @MADMANx511 Indeed, like I said near the start, while it's the "biggest" in it's class of mirrorless system cameras, calling it "big" would be quite in error.

  • What do you do with all the cameras once you review them? I want to get myself the olympus ep 3, is it worth the $899?

  • @AmunTheGreat Nikon are letting me hang onto the V1 they sent me, it'll make things easier down the line when new lenses etc come through so I can give those a look too.

As for the EP-3... it's a fantastic bit of kit. I love mine, and the latest lenses from Olympus for it are incredibly good.

  • Oh man I want one so bad.

  • blunty because of you i bought the netgear wireless adapter =)

  • Cool
