  • Maangchi, you need to try and make the real Lao papaya salad, the original. Once you try this, you'll see how much different it tastes from the Thai version. So please, give it a try!

  • Tip: you can also use carrots, vermicelli longevity noodles, long beans, green mango, and cucumber...^^

  • Very nice!

  • i'm not a big fan of papaya salad, but i still enjoy eating it :) growing up watching my mom make it, it always seemed so hard because she never used a shredder. but after learning about the shredder, that's all she uses now. good food!

  • i bet the somtum was good! this is coming from a Thai btw haha

  • Kohlabi it taste more like green papaya, try the green one not the purple. or sherd zuccini

  • @1974bzy thank you for the tip :)

  • i like som tom

  • Is the dried shrimp mandatory?

  • @rendezvous65 no, you can skip the dried shrimp and even substitute the fishsauce with a very light soy sauce (a good brand is 'Healthy Boy').

  • it looks similar to this one

  • looking*

  • I'm look for this recipe my brother friend is Asian his mom makes a spicy dish I think its called Tum Thai and sticky rice do u know how to make it or a recipe for it

  • @mssexxyunique This is the dish you are looking for! It is traditionally eaten with sticky rice ^^ Some people call it Som Tum Thai, or Som Dtum Thai. Thai, because this is the Thai way to make it. I think Laos people make it very differently. You can eat it with Larb Nuea (a spicy ground beef salad) or fried chicken drums or wings. Use a green papaya, if you can find it. Or make it with carrots, delicious too! Happy cooking! :)

  • My favorite food is papaya! I had some the other day and it was delicious!

  • yay! i was there ..it was good to see mrs kim n tanja ^^

  • @anilkale Hi Anil - thank you again so much for all your help. Hope you are well! Keep in touch, na kha? ^^

  • I love her accent too and yours maangchi!

  • Tanya is so right about the hacking at the papaya! here's a video of a Thai doing exactly THAT

    watch?v=HfckMD-c6Jo&feature=related

  • @TubeGuest5178 its alittle slow, i would know my mums full thai and eats the EVERYDAY not bad though

  • I cannot live without my papaya every weekend :) So cool to have this recipe on your channel..for me, I use cucumber instead of papaya just because it's lighter on the stomach and doesn't get you as full and mine has to be VERY spicy :)

  • i love papaya salad! instead of using cucumber and papaya, you can also use carrot (but it really depends on ur taste)

  • hello i'm thai and happy to see thai recipe in your channel

and i love somtum too ^^V

  • Or if you can't find papaya... use thinly shredded cucumber or green mango. Add some white rice vermicelli noodle, mix it in and it becomes a meal! You shld definatly come to MN one day and experience the Hmong flee market because the food there are phonomincal! An experience you will never forget!

  • @lindakay00 great tip! Thank you!

  • @lindakay00 And carrots!

  • Oooow this is my favourite Thai salad ever! <3

  • @Ylokau yayyy, and if you can find salted black crab you can add it too - it's soooo yummie :D

  • "ส้มตำ" (som tam) ^^

  • I like when she say "soak it in cold water" ^.^

  • Looked delicious!

I'm Thai. In my country, there are many green vegetable variations to make savory Som tam dish such as cabbage, carrots, green mango, green banana, green tamarind, or even boiled sweet corn kernels.

  • @achyraya thank you very much ^.^ I want to try the green mango variation (if I can find green mango that is hehehe).

  • So is this somthing similar to Coleslaw? I mean is the papaya not sweet? It looks really fresh and delicious, gotta try it!

  • @BenneLuke Hi, thank you for your question. there are different types of papaya. Green papaya is used for salads and is indeed not sweet. Hope you enjoy the recipe :)

  • @bobisaboy Thank you for your comment and your suggestions. I am working with what is available in my region. I cannot get the black salted crab here, but I have eaten them when I was in Bangkok. So yummie. I have never tried making it with shrimp paste - wouldn't it be more overpowering than the 2 little garlic cloves? ;-) I will give it a try as soon as summer returns. Many thanks again. -T.

  • i am allergic to shell fish, what can i swap for the shrimps?

  • @cDSTheBlackRose I would skip the shrimps and just use the fish sauce. And if you want to cook it for someone who is vegetarian/vegan you can swap the fishsauce for a light soysauce called 'nam se-ew kao'...a good brand is 'Healthy Boy' and available at all Asian supermarkets.

  • its look delicious...i want try it...^_^

  • @dexner89 Thank you. Yes, please do try it and let me know how it turned out :D

  • Cool!I'm half korean and half greek! :D Mixes FTW!

  • love it !!!

  • My mouth is watering from this video. I love Papaya Salad! Might make some to eat this weekend. Love mine super spicy and I eat them w/ egg rolls...yum.

  • @jewlsher @jewlsher Fabulous! I hope your salad will turn out super delicious. Maybe you can take a photo and post it on Maangchi's website? maangchi.com - thank you

  • She makes it weird...my mom makes it very different. But I'm Lao so that could be part of it.

  • i love mine very spicy ^_^ i use like 6 peppers or more lol

  • @OohSoVina1988 ooh~ : )

  • I just discovered your videos, and I all ready love you!!!

I live in NY where should i shop? I only know pearl river mart and i think they dont have a big variety and too expensive =p

    Happy Holidays!!!

    xoxo

  • Wonderful New Year wishes to you Maangchi, thanks for sharing your videos.

  • @Maangchi I'm not sure if you're doing this, but I'd recommend using some local music from the area that you like as the background music for each video, to represent the music of the area. Give us a full multicultural experience. ^^

  • i love somtam!! my mum's part thai and i grew up eating this very often, although we always buy it and never really make it ourselves xD

  • Merry Christmas!

    :-)

  • @tsif86 Merry Christmas!!

  • So fabulous.I my opinion if you add some garlic your dish be perfects.

  • With Khaw niaw

  • Merry Christmas to you and your family! :)

...and have a Happy New Year!

  • Can't wait to see more videos like this. That looked so yummy.

  • i didn't know you can use swede? that's weird. we always uses the green papaya, carrot, cucumber, or long strips of green beans....

  • Sometimes my mum uses swede too.

  • Next time come in Italy!!!!!!!!!

  • weird how im full thaii and ive never made it anything like this..o.o

  • Anyonghaseyo Maangchi! Go go, gapshida!

  • Looks great, thanks for posting this!!

  • It's not THAI!!!! aaaahhhhhh.

  • @revoltx

"Som tam" is a Thaifood it´s from Isaan People!

  • @Sweetsaimaithai Yes and Isaan is actually Lao people. "som tom" is just the way Thai people call "Thum mak hoong". Just like how the Thai change their name for a version of their Pho dish and call it Thai. This is a southeast asian dish all in all. camboadia makes it, Lao makes it, Vietnamese makes it.

  • Since when does *BANG BANG* make your neighbors think that you're making salad?

  • OMG! I can't wait to make this. All my friends love your kimchi and I am slowly working through your recipes. This one will be epic! Keep them coming Maangchi, you are a star!!! <3

  • Looks healthy!! Love Thai food :)

  • ส้มตำ som tam so delicious, i am Thai people and i love you maangchi

  • Great job!

  • your suppose to use pickled crabs not shrimps .... just to let it out case dried shrimp don't have juice to blend the flavor just a fyi

  • @somexgewdiies cause* but i love you cooking show

  • It looks delicious.

Thai papaya salad is one of my favorite foods.

If eaten with fried chicken (or grilled chicken) and steamed sticky rice are very good.

  • Tanya and you are so cute! Making be crave papaya salad now :D

  • Wow! I would have never thought to see this recipe on your channel! I'm Hmong and we make papaya salad all the time! =)

Another substitution for papaya (if you don't have it) is carrots! I love making it with carrots 'cause it's slightly sweet. And instead of shrimp, you can just use shrimp paste!

  • I love papaya salad!!! It's the best Thai dish ever!!! But instead of the green beans my family usually use Rice Vermicelli Noodles, regular sugar and crabs instead of dried shrimps.

  • anchovey fish sauce makes it taste better

  • this with sticky rice... droool omg.

  • does she have her own cooking channel? she should-- I loved watching her!!!!

  • @embracingnatural Hi there and many thanks :) No, I don't have my own cooking channel (yet). But I am contemplating it for the future, so watch this space haha ^^

  • I LOVVVVVVE Papaya salad:DDD

  • ive been wanting to eat this!!! thank you!! XD <3

  • omg! i keep repeating the part where maangchi tried speaking in english accent..TOO CUTE..^^

  • she really doesn't look a bit thai! i'm half thai half german, too :D

and she's adding such a tiny amount of fish sauce and chili... it doesn't taste good if it's not spicy... i would have used 4-5 chilis for that amount she makes :o

  • @chikaivi Hi there, thank you for your comment! Regarding the chilis, I didn't want to set the people that are not used to hot food on fire ;-) Great to find another 'look krueng'/ half Thai on here!

  • wow! She doesnt look like she's half Thai!!

  • lovely episode!

  • My Dad is also from Germany and my mom from Korea :)

  • maangchi you're such a sweetheart :D i can't imagine you getting mad lol i wish i could hire you to cook for my girlfriend's birthday

  • bash it.... love it!

  • 0:26 : camera man.

  • @RadicalDreamerss

I shot this episode , but the 0:26 footage was shot by the hotel staff !!! :)

  • @thenewblack84 Do you know what kind of video camera was used? I love it!

  • @kemushichan A cannon 550 DSLR

  • I use Kohlrabi ( กะหล่ำปม) instead of papaya.

  • you're so cute

  • So cute u two!!! ;)

  • awesome ..this is my kind of food magic :))

  • Awesome, she doesn't look half Thai! And this dish looks soooooo delicious!

  • was the green bean raw ??

  • @shellkayee yes, you can use either Thai snake beans or just green beans. But you dont have to use them if you dont like raw beans. Enjoy!

  • 8:22

Is that "larb" on the right? I heard her mumble something about roasted rice which is traditionally served with larb.

  • @BigNick071 Yes, we also cooked larb. :)

  • I never thought of using a swede to make som tam. I'll have to try that. Thanks for the great recipe.

  • Tanja, you did a great job using what you have! I will have to give it a try!

  • @naly3782 awh, thank you very much! Some also use Kolrabi, but again something I cannot find here. There are many variations to make this. Also with carrots, but I just love it this way (though I'd use a bit more chilies hahaha).

  • Green Papaya is easily available here in Harrisonburg, Virginia. I never thought about using rutabaga before, and I have plenty from my garden. Free ruta's are better than the $3 papaya any day! Thanks for the vid and the new idea!

  • wow thats fantastic how you come to the UK xx

  • Pronounced: dum soam in Laos or soam dum in Thai :D

  • OMG Nichkhun's FAV. ahhas WGM any1?

  • @BaboCookieMonster haha was thinking that the whole time XD

  • @zenanaps ขอบคุณมากค่ะ :)

  • Oh, papaya salad, I loooove papaya salad.

I must have this or mango salad each time I eat at a Thai restaurant.

  • I like laos style more

  • @sindymoua what is Laos style like? Can you post the recipe please?

  • @arale1402 for laos style they use thai chili, garlic, shrimp paste, crab paste, palm sugar, tomatoes, lime, fish sauce

  • @sindymoua thank you :)

  • im Thai this is look so delicious ^^

  • It's like kimchi for us in my hometown in southeast Thailand haha

  • ส้มตำ(Som Tum) น่ารับประทานมาก ^ ^" น้ำลายไหลครับ

Eng: That look so yummy ^ ^" My mouth starts watering

  • OMG YOU'RE IN THE UK?! %^&^%$

  • Love Som Tam eating and making. Must admit when I order in Thailand and they add their small crabs that look like they have been attacked by a hammer is not to my liking.

  • oooh I want to make and try it out~

  • she doesn't look half thai, more like full caucasian.

  • I like how she had a lot of suggestions for substitutes.

  • Maangchi, was that your daughter in the red sweater near the end?

  • Loved this episode! Her accent gave it a "nigella feel" Haha. And I Love papaya salad! Nom! My mom makes it very strong! :D And Palm sugar! My grandma/mom used to crush it up and give it to us kids as candy for a treat :))

  • I liked the bowl you guys put the rutabaga in. It looked like its got holes but are glazed over

  • i love this! som tam is one of my most favorite dishes! you should definitely try it Laos style!

  • @tlew1992 Laos style recipe pleeeeaaaaase - I am so curious now ;-)

    감사드려요. ^^

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! ^ ^ *

  • my mum makes somtam ALL THE TIME!!! she makes carrot somtam though (woot for a thai recipe XD im thai)

  • i love both thai and cambodian papaya salad nomnomnom

  • I love papaya salad. I'm Hmong so I grew up on Hmong Papaya salad. So delicious. You can make it with mango, carrot, papaya or cucumber. Love this video. Hope you will make it out to LA. I've been craving pork bone spicy soup. I'll have to make your recipe again. Thanks for sharing the video. Hope you are having a great time in London.

  • omg! i never saw a korean person making papaya salad before? this must be ur first time making it. I love eating it! i make it whenever im craving for it. u can make cucumber salad with the same ingredients as well..but it will have more juice to it from the cucumbers. u should try it someday. its good. =) but watching this video, i think we all make our papaya salads different. i don't use sugar in mines. in the end it still taste great.

  • All I did was make a request for some vegetarian recipes and boy do I get hell for that. My mistake... I should have just subbed to a vegan channel. Love the videos maangchi... thanks anyway.

  • I love cucumber, papaya, mango, green bean, & carrot salads! :)

    Omgaaah, *drools*

  • I love when Maangchi tries to imitate her accent :D

  • this video is awesome. i love her accent too!

  • Hi Maangchi, Could you please make AL Chigae (with Cod Roe) some time in the future. I love the taste but can't figure out how to make it. THank you.

  • I love Papaya salad, make it all the time Cambodian version, pretty much the same thing. thx for sharing, looks like you had great fun.

  • There are indeed some variations...you can try carrots, green mangoes or even green apples! I actually just flew from US to Thailand like 11 hours ago...now I know what I'll have for lunch ;-)

  • The film quality on this is epic. It looks like a real cooking show. It's lovely. I want to see more of her!

  • i thought it was called tam sum...

  • Laos calls it Tom Som and thai calls it the opposite, thai's call it Som tom.

  • Tanja is just a subscriber like me? :P

  • Honestly, for those of you who complain about not being able to find more asian vegetarian recipes, adapting recipes for your lifestyle should be your own responsibility and should be applicable across all sorts of cuisine. Maangchi makes no point to be a vegetarian recipe channel, but at least she is very good at responding with alternative solutions to those who have specific preferences.

  • This is so authentic! My mom makes her papaya salad the exact same way! When green papayas aren't available, we normally just use unripe mangoes :)

  • you can add shrimp paste (gapi) and/or crab paste/juice.

  • oooh, the mortar has a crack in it,that's bad......i recommend a mortar made with metal

  • @sweetdevillover OY! I love my mortar - leave it alone! hahaha, kidding...yes I know I should replace it at some point! But I would probably go for a stone one...but then again....I REALLY LOVE my mortar lol.

  • Maangchi! You are such an inspiration!

  • This is one of my favorite thai dishes! It is super good, but also stinks. I highly recommend you buy it from a thai restaurant. It takes at least a half hour to make.

  • i dont want to be super negative but this seems like alot of work for salad. hahaha

  • This is a great idea!

  • i would love it if you did a updated video in all your korean soup...humm sounds yummo. lol..;)

  • Wow! Thai dish on Maanchi channel.

  • People where I am still make them!

They cut it the way it looks like it's going to cut them.

  • XD i love her accent too

  • how yummy! papaya salad is one of the best dishes ever! it's great that your friend is teaching everybody how to make it! ^^

  • A combo zuchinis and carrots also work well to replace the papaya if it is hard to find in your area.

  • This is one of my fav dishes. You can totally discard the dried shrimps and replace the fish sauce with regular table salt to make this dish vegetarian. As a general rule I would mix the chilli, garlic, palm sugar, fish sauce, and lime juice in the mortar first so that I can taste the dressing and make adjustments. No matter how much you make, use 2 times the amount of fish sauce to the lime juice and if the dish is too spicy you can replace the chilli with a lil' cayenne pepper powder instead.

  • I luv papaya salad!!!

  • omg! you made thai papayas salads!! those are the best! there is many different ways to make them :) you will know know the difference once you tastes different kinds of papayas salads. Whenever we don't have papayas we substitute cucumbers. It's very juicy and will bring out the flavor of the fermented fish sauce, tomatoes, and pepper. Try it out sometimes if you want :)

  • @Tiggerroo02 I did it tonight! I made som tam with turnip and cucumber and it turned out really delicious. Tomorrow I may try out mango! I'm so happy I learned this recipe!

  • @Maangchi that's great! I haven't try mango either so I'll probably give it a try too :)

  • @Maangchi try adding a little bit of tamarind paste also

  • @Maangchi mango is the best, especially when u mix the papya and mango together
