Dumbledore being gay is a wonderful addition to story. It may not be the most important detail, but that's what makes it such a good detail, because being gay isn't a bad thing and it's not what defines who you are as a person. Just because Dumbledore is gay does not mean he can't be friends with Harry Potter or be just as good a role model as he always was.
